This is my first posting ever. I've been a spectator for the last six months or so and started with 3D four months ago (Lightwave).
I hope and expect for constructive critic so fire away.
So here's some backround on the character and what kind of game I'm talking about here.
The character's name is Azav'Ha'El (which means "Abandoner of God" in Hebrew) He is one of the angels who ran away instead of standing by god in his fight against lucifer. In punishment for running God took his wings and legs before casting him down.
Azav'Ha'El is one of the major villains in a survival\horror type game combining design influence from Clive Barker's Hellraser and the biblical armageddon :airguitar

Uh, outch ! Hey that´s really something total different, great idea and a new Hieronymus Bosch establish a very interesting and surrealistic thread. It reminds me a bit of Bosch work on " The Garden of Earthly Delights " a very strange but interesting masterpiece.

Wow and outch !

The character design by itself is awesome, really characterfull !
I'm not sure for the foot of the mecanical structure, it looks a bit awkyard to me regarding the design of the upper part (just my two cents)
The modelling looks good so far, but try to insist more on the volumes, for now he looks a bit like a "skinny" fat guy, it lacks depth in the fat ( Ihope you got my point ;) )

Great work ! Continue to update !

Wow! What a way to break into the CGTalk scene!

I love what you've shown of him so far!

I have to say I like his face in the original sketch better then his face in the "full body shot" you posted later because you can see his Angelic features in there, but they are distorted... I just think it would be a good idea to show that this isn't just some generic evil dude, but an evil dude whose roots lie in heaven, as an angel... Gives the character more depth and credibility. IMNSHO

I'm realy looking forward to seeing more!

P.S. - Are you going to also model his girlfriend, Natasha'Shem? ;) [/hebrew joke]

Yes Bruegel, sure its the one I forgotten, very nice work. Your sketch looks really nice, great work so far and a surreal world has no rules in real so you can play around with every construction you want and it will work.

Great start, now since you have our all attention we waiting for a cool update of your work...come up with the next images

STEN ;)

I want to thank everybody who took the time to let me know what they think, I appreciate it:)
Here are two more pieces of concept art, a more beastial form of Azav'Ha'El (claws & all) and some optional legs (without appropriate harness (yet).
More 3D soon to follow.:D

This is at the same time both deeply disturbing, and incredibly original. The biblical/eschatological slant adds a huge amount of depth to the story. Makes the character even more hideous. Difficult subject matter no doubt from someone so close to megido. ;)

The modeling is definitely coming along. I'd have to agree about adding volume. Pack on as much girth as you can. His posture when modeling can help this. Make sure his weight is distributed over and around his center of mass. Also try to get over keeping the verts in close. Don't be afraid to really throw 'em around. It really could help.

Your sketches simply rock, BTW.

Welcome to the challenge, and CGTalk! Glad to have you aboard!

And on the subject of legs, check my entry, I need some suggestions with mine.

I think you might be missing the thighs on the legs and that is what's bothering you about it. I used to not notice the thighs on birds because I was too focused on the backwards legs. It turns out that there are no backwards legs I think. What you are looking at, what you think are the entire leg is just a portion of the leg(calf, ankle, foot, toes). It's just that it is verry proportionally different from humans.

btw: great job on the modeling design, I am very looking foward to seeing it textured mapped. It should enhance both its hideousness and beauty.

Very nice concept art amir....

Very much a Hellraiser style and feel here.......vivid,and actually scary, but it looks to be quite a challenge for you in 3D.But you are off on the right foot,I will be interested to see more of your progress.

It's chilling to look at,but that's a good thing some of the times.Fine start, I'll see you after another up-date,perhaps then I can giove a suggestion ,but for now,you know what you have to do.............:wip: :wip:

Thank you for the kind words, Genesis Max :)
Here is the begining of Azav'Ha'El's supporting frame in turnaround.

By the way, I may be entering a veichle soon - a war chariote.
So if you like Azav'Ha'El theres a good chance you'll like the chariot... NEED MORE TIME.

Kenter

I can barely see that,it looks like a potatoe on a stick, hehe.Bigger renders are needed.
I think that the sketch itself is done very well, but the idea is way off for a game icon,it's bone chilling. It's not fun or memorablr really,it's more grotesque actually.
Still done well, but just not for this theme.:)

Amir
06-19-2003, 01:04 PM
Point taken Kenter, about the renders.
I dont agree about the rest of your critic, the survival horror genre allows for some twisted visuals (Silent Hill 1 & 2 and Resident Evil comes to mind). And trust me you wont forget Azav'Ha'El so easily (overly fat fallen angels with no legs hanging from a metal frame tend to stick to memory :) )

it's good, the work you know, but never in a million years would that sell more than the usual Icon types. It does stick in my mind for a while, but most normal people will forget it as fast as possible,it's not a nice image. It's good for quick fun,but not icon material.Just my 2 cents, your work is good however,no hrd feelings.

Amir
06-19-2003, 01:25 PM
Absoloutly no hard feelings, you are of course entitled to an opinion, and I thank you for yours, but disagre. In most games you cant stray too much from the norm in the goodguys design, but the villains can be as freeky as hell (and should be in my opinion) wich usually makes them more memorable then the hero. I just tried to make something that is not mundane boring or the norm, and I hope I've done that.
O.k this here is my sketch for a dark elven officer's war chariot, its for an adventure game with a strong war motif.
Tell me what you think.

Just hoping I can finish it on time .:banghead:

Wow, great progress, just like hellraiser, really freaky, but if you really want it be nasty i sugest that you make his tits and belly bigger and i disagree with Kenter, cuz this char really is memorable. Keep working mate

Its been awhile.
Thanks to everyone who entered and let me know what they thoght. :)
Here are three more updates (o.k one update in TurnAround:blush: ) showing the proportion and location of the legs, in the end they will have armour plating so this is only the "skeleton". Tell me what you think.

Amir
06-24-2003, 09:55 AM
I'm having trouble with these legs as I have no prior experience with machines (mechanical joints especially), if someone has tips or knows of a tutorial on the subject please let me know.

This is the very first rendered version of Azav'Ha'El'.
Just lighting and basic surfaces, I was going for creepy as hell (pun intended).
Tell me what you think.

I really like you concept sketchs and the model looks good so far.

Its creeping me out, the face kind of looks like someone quiet harmless guy and then the body and the frame are freaky!
