This challenge is just a prelude to what the overall composition is really about based on my current projects...www.chisham69.blogspot.com

and taking part in this excellent steampunk challenge will help me hone and refine my skills & ideas.

Just some updates on the the tower of Babel and the ideas and inspiration behind the composition originally I was playing around with the Pygmalion myth, and thought the statue of Pygmalion et Galatea would be a nice subject matter but then I thought a nice big ‘tractor’ would be more suitable, 'nice and steamy' as one might say.... and it ties in nicely with the whole 'steampunk aesthic'

Other inspirations for the composition includes Francisco Jose de Goya y Lucientes ‘Transporting a Stone Block, 1786-87...’

Hi guys!

First off, I know for sure I wont make the January 19th deadline. No real excuse as I knew about the challenge since early December, I've had enough time to think of a topic and how I will approach it.. So what I will do is carry on with this as a WIP and upload all this stuff over at WIP/Critique: 2D, Illustrations and Concept Art and eventually CG Choice Gallery: 2D, Illustrations and Concept Art, the reason being I want to actually finish this piece and not leave it as mere 'sketch doodle', like I usually tend to do.

Also this challenge is actually quite inspiring, the only thing I will say is, I will try and retain as much of the 'steampunk aesthetic'.

And develop the whole 'gears, springs, brass and steam elements' as a 3d modelling exercise, especially the 'dual saws' attached to the tractor, as for the actual 'tractor' itself, I will try and retain as much of the 'steampunk aesthetic'

The actual mechanism will be based on old style ‘locomotive’ engines which will power the actual ‘dual saws’

The Tower of Babel…story

Many generations after Noah, when the whole earth still spoke the same language, people traveled to a plain in the Middle East and settled there.
Then they said to one another, “Let's build a city and a tower, and let's make a name for ourselves, so we won't be scattered around the whole earth.”

The people made a tower designed for worshiping the sun, moon and stars. Mankind had chosen to worship God's creations instead of the Lord Himself.
This decision was a direct refusal to obey God's command to go out and fill the earth. Also, the tower was designed for worshiping the sun, moon and stars. Mankind had chosen to worship God's creations instead of the Lord Himself. The Lord looked upon the city and tower which these people were building.
And He said, “Behold, the people are organizing as one group and since they all speak the same language, nothing they imagine to do will be held back from them. Let us go down and confuse their language, so that they cannot understand each other's speech.” And the Lord mixed up their language, causing them to stop building the city.

Therefore the name of that city became “Babel,” which means confusion; because there the Lord multiplied language on the earth, causing people to scatte
Form of the Tower of Babel

The form of the tower must have resembled the constructions which today exist only in a ruined condition in Babylonia; the most ancient pyramids of Egypt present a vestige of the same form. Cubic blocks of masonry, decreasing in size, are piled one on top of the other, thus forming separate stories; an inclined plane or stairway leads from one story to the other. The towers of Ur and Arach contained only two or three stories, but that of Birs-Nimrud numbered seven, not counting the high platform on which the building was erected. Each story was painted in its own peculiar colour according to the planet to which it was dedicated. Generally the corners of these towers faced the four points of the compass, while in Egypt this position was held by the sides of the pyramids. On top of these constructions there was a sanctuary, so that they served both as temples and observatories. Their interior consisted of sun-dried clay, but the outer walls were coated with fire-baker brick. The asphalt peculiar to the Babylonian neighbourhood served as mortar; all these details are in keeping with the report of Genesis. Though some writers maintain that every Babylonian city possessed such a tower, or zikkurat (meaning "pointed" according to Schrader, "raised on high" according to Haupt, "memorial" according to Vigouroux), no complete specimen has been preserved to us. The Tower of Khorsabad is perhaps the best preserved, but Assyrian sculpture supplements our knowledge of even this construction. The only indication of the time at which the Tower of Babel was erected, we find in the name of Phaleg (Genesis 11:10-17), the grandnephew of Heber; this places the date somewhere between 101 and 870 years after the Flood. The limits are so unsatisfactory, because the Greek Version differs in its numbers from the Massoretic text.

Hi everyone, here is a concept that I started for the steampunk challenge and is yet to be finished, originally the concept was a sketch study based upon my current project www.chisham69.blogspot.com and rehashed for the steampunk challenge.

notional outline of the 'gears, springs, brass and steam elements'....might include some people as 'bandro' suggested.

still doing the values. No color yet

‘locomotive’ engines which will power the actual ‘dual saws’

Good luck to everyone! I see some great work has already been done.

WIP/Critique: 2D, Illustrations and Concept Art and....
....eventually the CG Choice Gallery: 2D, Illustrations and Concept Art (this is one piece i would to actually finish......and not leave as a mere doodle.......

Now that the challenge is over I will continue with this as my own personal project.
await comments and crits over at WIP
