So I've been trying to get better at my figure drawing. I understand the 8 head ideal and all that and all the advice on the net seems to be "to improve your figures, get an anatomy book". I've flipped through the one's at the local book stores and I just don't see how they'd be much help. This is probably because I have no idea what I'm looking for. Am I supposed to just be reproducing the included images of the muscles and bones at first? I've seen some books recommended, but nothing explaining exactly what the factors that go into a useful anatomy book are...

well talking strictly from an anatomical point of view the most important factor is how the muscles group, passover and connect to each other, the names aren't that important. bridgemans books are good for this and there a anatomy book by Joesph Shepard that has all the names and detailed drawings, ive read many anatomy books and these are the only two that stand out. avoid hogarth as his figures look like rubber even though the muscles are in the right places.

Nice to hear support for Sheppard's anatomy text's. They're just about the only books that delve deeply into surface anatomy. I use his three text's almost exclusively now, and I am never left with questions.
