Hey everyone,
What an amazing topic for this challenge!
I've done a lot of thinking these last few days, and have missed the boat on a few ideas that have been chosen already, but I'm honing in on creating a giant steampunk Cerberus, the three-headed hellhound and Guardian of Hades, in confrontation with Hercules, as part of the hero's twelve tasks. Some concept sketches to follow - I spent a few hours tonight just getting ideas down.
Hope everyone's well and good luck to you all - There is some stunning work around already!

Great start, that's one mean steampunk powered pooch, the composition seems a bit classic though, maybe you could play some more with it, make it a bit more dynamic, nice colors as well, good luck to you and Hercules

good ideia...
i think that this composition will not explore the vision of this marvelous character.
think about! ;)
i will see you post
Thanks again guys - the composition will change a fair bit, this was just an exercise in palette and scale (and to pin my colours to Cerberus - I lost a few ideas to quick-fingered artists! ;)
Cheers,
Phil

Great idea, Id mess a little more with your composition, its getting very symmetrical which you should either play to or try to avoid... I really love the initial direction for this one tho. Show us more!

Bhi sé go hiontach! I agree with the other posters about the composition though, it's a bit staid. Oh...how about having Hercules taking up most of the picture from an extremely low viewpoint (like around his ankles?) and seeing Cerberus through his legs...more drama...the drama must always be extreme for me. :D
Coinnigh!

pretty strong concept!! me with paperclip regarding drama .. that'll really pull the viewer into the picture :p .. also .. i think hercules is losing focus .. more like blending into the background .. almost missed him .. other than that .. i'm very curious to see your next update!
all the best my friend!

Hey everyone,
Thanks Theresa and Neville!
Man, there is some stunning work coming through in this challenge - it's a pleasure to follow it all!
I've found the time to do some further concept stuff on Cerberus - I wanted to differentiate the three heads, and rather than just model them differently, I decided I'd take it further and give each head a different weapon/power/defining colour - Gas, Fire and Electricity - Green, Red and Blue. Thing is, I'm not 100% whether my Electro-Head stands outside the Steampunk 'rules'? I figured the old-school Frankenstein's Lab transformers would be OK? Anyway, this is all still fairly early - I really hope I have the time to do all the modelling I'm setting myself up for here ;)
Thanks for looking and keep up the fantastic work everyone.
Phil
PS The Gas-Head is modelled on a WW1 gas-mask, the Fire-Head is a furnace full of coal and the Elctro-Head references some old engines and plasma balls ;)

Hey everyone,
Have done a bit of modelling in the spare hours I'm able to grab ;) I'm still exploring the idea of the three heads having individual characteristics (gas/fire/electricity) and have done some test renders - I will add a lot of Steampunk rivets/piping/panels before completion. Work to be done on ElectroHead - I'm not sure if he is a bit too 'alien' at the mo.
Cheers,
Phil

Just an environment study for Hades - I want it to feel like an engine room, cogs and pistons hiding in the darkness - the Gates will be a massively ornate clockwork mechanism.
Thanks for looking,
Phil

Wow terrific concept. Just one thing though, and I hate that this is so nitpicky, but isn't electricity kind of anathema to steampunk? I mean the part of the idea of steampunk is a world that is powered by steam instead of electricity right?
Please don't hurt me.

Looking great Phil. like the head concepts and the environment. As for steampunk, I presume as long as the electricity is from lightning or some other natural source rather than generated it should fit. Though then again I might be wrong! Anyway, cant wait to see the end result
Nah guys you're totally right - I just needed to confirm that the electricity was off-base. Thanks for clearing that up! Will revisit ;)
Thanks for taking the time to comment ;)
Phil
This is looking really nice, cracking little idea! I especially like the idea that each head has a different weapon (etc), shame about the electricity.. Although perhaps you could have each head as a different part of the steam process, so one is water, one fire and the last one steam? Keep it up, looking great
Thanks Matt! Good thinking, will keep that in mind ;)

Hey everyone,
Have done some more work on Cerberus' head (I think I'm going to create the three heads the same way, and differentiate them more subtly, with different gold filigree and eye-shapes)
This is basically painted over a render - two material passes, one dark, etched metal, the other gold, added the coal and smoke and detail in Photoshop. I'm nearly there with the body and legs - this is a material test more than anything.
Cheers,
Phil

Hey everyone,
This is a rough low-res render, a test-pose as well as some quick painting work with details etc - having gone through this process, I reckon I'm going to paint most of the detail rather than modelling - there's a ton of cogs and clockwork stuff you can't actually see in this render ;)He won't be this bright/gold either, more a mixture of ebony and brass like the image above I think.
Thanks for looking,
Phil
