Thanks!

All the textures are hand crafted in photoshop. When i bought my wacom tablet last summer my textures shifted to another level...

woaw great! model! amayzing precision

I am a bit suspicious about the skin he is standing on, you soulhd work just a bit more on that ( for my opinion )

BunnyBunny: There's about five to seven lights in scene and for the final touch I used VRay Free.

JonC: I'm not too happy with skin too. It looked good at some point but I kind a lost it. Rendering things in passes would have helped a lot.

maybe add a few hairs on the skin / ground

Thanks everybody!

I used 3ds max 5 for modeling and Photoshop for texturing and color correction. VRay Free was used for rendering.

Yes, skin/ground needs some work and I already had some hairs coming from it but they were hard to make look realistic. That area needs some research.

"The six million dollar flea!" Thats a good one!

The flea from City of Lost Children way back was the thing that really got me inspired about possibilities of CG.

Anyway, here's wireframe/screenshot and some texture samples (in low res).

the DOF could use some work, looks like it was done in Photoshop? Around the legs (where the skin fades to the background) there is some blur 'issues'.

otherwise, looks nice :)

ssalo
06-17-2003, 07:13 AM
Yes, DOF was made really cheesy way in Photoshop. Right now I don't have access to any DOF plugins (PS or max) so I cheated it really badly. Multipass in max is OK but isn't really a option when you use GI ( = too long render times...)

Error404

for that, I would render out just the bug and shadow (targa with alpha) and the background seperate, then blur the background with the blur tool, and plop in the bug! badabing badaboom! :)

ssalo

Yes, that would be normal procedure to do things right but I deadline for competiton was looming ( only few hours left and I was really tired) and I couldn't afford to do another render. I'm a bit annoyed about it can spotted by careful looking but, what can you do, a deadline is a deadline.

Very cool indeed! Fantastic concept too.:applause:

I feel the hair strands are a little too symetrical though, and I sure like to see some sub-surface illumination on the flea. That would really make it perfect!:)

ssalo
06-17-2003, 10:25 AM
Graf Orlok: You are right. I'll probaply fix them later. I did some quite neat 2d-composition/multpass -hacks for sub-surface scattering but it still needs more work.

I fixed the DOF issue. I used Vray Free's DOF because of to my surpirise it was quite fast. I also color corrected and desaturated render a bit. I think this is thee final version. Time to move on!

Anyway, thanks everybody for your kind comments.

And, here is a high quality 1280 x 1024 desktop wallpaper version of it. I Hope you like it!
