I have finally decided to submit something on CG Talk. I have been watching the fourms and everyones work for sometime, I decided after a few months of thinking/saying I'm not worthy, to actually post something. I would love some good CC, remember I am a newb though.

I had this idea for a creature that I wanted to make for a really long time, so I thought I would try making it in PS7 and maybe later trying to model it in Lightwave... in which I really am a total newbie in. I don't have any references, I lost the notebook I had sketch the creature in.

Here is the first layer/floorplan

I think the best thing you could do right now is work on your basic drawing skills. Whether you are trying to make concept art from which to base a 3d model or whether you are trying to make a fully developed illustration, the underlying sketch is really important.
The image you have posted has several issues going on:
1. Lack of any real structure for the creature, which could be resolved with a more detailed initial sketch.
2. Certain elements don't mesh well with other elements. In particular, the eye is obviously taken from one photo, and the rest is either a pattern taken from photoshop or another photo which has been tiled to look like skin.
3. The image looks flat, partially because the pattern used to look like skin doesn't "wrap" around the form of the head.

I would go and try to rework your sketch for the creature...maybe try including all of the head and maybe even it's body. When you're ready to scan it, you might go check out some tutorials on coloring in photoshop. There's a whole thread dedicated to 2d tutorials in this forum.
Hope this helps

I appreciate your help, I will try what you have suggested. I am not very good at drawing, so I will have to work on that. Anyways thanks so much for your suggestions... keep em coming, I will try to update.... again today, so far what I have took about five hours, it will probably take me a few hours to implement any of the suggestions...

You suggested that my intial sketch be more detailed... what kind of details and things should I include in the intial sketch so my creature has more structure and life. This question is also open to anyone.. thanks

Try imagining what the bone structure of the creature would look like. In this case, you would sketch the shape of the skull. In a reptilian creature, you would most likely have a place for the eye socket, maybe a ridge leading to the nostrils, probably another ridge around the teeth. You might try going and looking at photos of reptiles to inform the drawing of your own creature. After you get the structure taken care of, you would usually start to define a light source....adding in highlights and shadow. That's where your drawing will usually begin to get some depth. Smaller details, such as the pattern on the skin, would usually be added last.
On a side note, there are a lot of different ways to do things...I'm just giving you some suggestions that have worked for me. Again, I would check out that tutorial thread, I think there are links to some drawing tutorials.
