Steampunk Myths and Legends Entry: Pablo Gentile

I'm exploring for this challenge a version of "The Judgment of Paris", where Lord Paris, is forced to choose the most beautiful of the three Empresses of the world: Lady Aphrodyte, Queen Hera and Commander Athena...

Just an idea i'm exploring, it may change in the following days. And the drawing is first draft of Aphrodyte.

Key concepts:
Aphrodyte is a beautiful and sophpisticated lady seated on a shell like hovering throne.

The Apple of Discord may be a sort of bomb... more sketches soon

And Paris... i still don't know about paris.

A bit more on the concept:
Lord Paris is an engineer, a real genius (almost a mad scientist), working at his lab in the mountains, in isolation.
He is surrounded by his inventions: all kind of little automatons, some steam-powered, some fully clockwork/spring-powered.

The image may show Lord Paris, as the three ladies aproach him, leaded by King Zeus, to gain his favor for the Judgment.

Holographic Steam/Plasma Laser powered device
This device is used by Lady Aphodyte to show Paris the beauty of Helen.

It produces a 3D (tho a bit lo-fi) image of the subject.


The bottom part (not in the drawing yet) has a boiler with a little steam engine, and a plasma lamp.
Some of the steam goes to power the plasma lamp dynamo.
The remaining steam, goes through a tube to upper cap of the device (in the drawing)
From the top cap, the steam is poured to form a faint mist.
The light from the plasma lamp is gathered and refracted to form a coherent beam.
the beam is directed to the base under the cap (in the drawing) using total internal reflection of a high grade cristal
the beam is then divided, refracted, reflected and precisely directed using an array of diamond prisms and mirrors (in the drawing)
the little beams are shined throug the steam mist recreating the 3D image through interference patterns.

notes: the mirrors and prisms are controlled by a tiny and very complicaded clockwork device.
The image data is stored in a series of little metal drums with tiny spikes like that of a musical box

The image produced is low quality but acceptable.
It can be animated for a few seconds.
It may have some color, but fidelity is very poor.
Strong wind blows the mist out, rendering the device useless.

This is a first sketck of lord Paris. Just to grasp his mood, (clothes coming soon).
I wonder how Paris should be. He is about to betray his wife, and refuse both wisdom and power, in favor of the love of a beautiful girl... (sorry for my English).
Thinking about it. Any comment /suggestion welcome.

Refining the concept for Lady Aphrodite. She's dressed very sexy, with a tight corset.

Here she's using the Steam/plasma 3D device to show the beauty of Helen to Paris.

In the geek legend to further enforce the preference of Paris, the goddess reveals her naked body to him.
Here, she thinks that showing one leg in stockings should be enough.

Any advice welcome.

Here is a little advance on Paris Costume.
He has several implants, the tubes and plugs in his hair, and the jacks and sockets in his chest.
Maybe hes fearing death... for Paris is a very coward character (i never posted the original myth... i guess i should).
Still working on this.

The first concept of Oenone (Wyneone?) wife of Paris, betrayed by him in favour of the beautiful Helen of Sparta (in the original legend).

I still don't know if she will appear in the final image, but anyway, i sketched her out.

This is the first (still veeery rough) full scene concept.

The original legend (quick and dirty):
Prince Paris (living in exile in the mountains) is told (by Zeus) to choose wich one of the three goddesses (Aphrodite, Hera and Athena) is the fairest, by handing her Apple of Discord (labled kallistei, "for the fairest").

Athena offered him wisdom, and to win every battle.
Hera offered him to be emperor of Europe and Asia.
And Aphrodite offered him the love of the most beautiful woman in the world (Helen); and reinforced the idea by showing herself naked to him.

Paris (married to Oenone, a beautiful nymph) choses the gift of Aphrodite... (thus starting the troyan war, later on, cause Helen was also married... a real mess)

I like this story because of it's symbolism, of a man that have to choose between the spiritual growth (Athena), the power (Hera) and lust (Aphodite).

My steampunk version (still in progress):
Lord Paris, a mad scientist living in his lab in the mountains, and working with his wife Wynnone, is asked by King Zeus to choose wich one of his wifes deserves to share the throne with him.

In the scene, Paris is approached by Lady Aphrodite, in her clamlike carriage (powered by a pedal system run by a group of kids). She shows him the beauty of helen in a steam powered holo device, that scatters an array of light beams through the steam to form a 3D holographic image of her.
And, instead of getting naked, she thinks that showing one of her legs in stockings should be enough...

note: Aphrodite is surrounded by a crew of little kids ("steamboys") that opperate her carraige and the steam-holo device, like the little angels of the classic paintings.

Yes, no doubt i had to give up...
i was (am) very busy, a few summer (yes, it's summer down here) complications at the studio, and a lot to work to do.
