Karl Knarr has entered "Steampunk Myths and Legends".
My concept is Hercules fighting the hydra. Hera (angry with Hercules because of his origins as the son of her husband Zeus and a human woman) made Hercules go mad and kill his wife and children. Apollo told Hercules to work for King Eurystheus for twelve years as a punishment for the murders. During this time, he had to perform 10 Labors. Feats so difficult as to seem impossible.
Note: Yes, I know there were 12 Labors in total. But that's because Eurystheus disallowed two of them claiming that Hercules didn't fulfill the letter of the request even though he accomplished it. The Hydra was one of them.
The second Labor was to kill the Lernean Hydra. A snake like beast that had nine heads. Eight of them were mortal, but one was immortal. The added problem was that as each of the mortal heads was killed, two more would spawn in it's place. Hercules called on his companion Iolaus to burn the stumps of each head before it could respawn. When the was down to the final imortal head, he severed it from the neck (which was mortal) and buried the immortal head under a rock.
Eurystheus refused to acknowledge this Labor because Iolaus helped Hercules in the battle.
In my Steampunk version, I think I'll go with a three headed steam powered hydra which will look a little more dragon than snake. The beast will lair in a rundown factory. Hercules will be armed with a suitable weapon and engaged in battle with the creature. I'll post some WIP as I begin the work.
