Well, here are the first rough character sketches. The one on the left is a grunt soldier and the one on the right is the main character.
The idea is to show the mighty steam empire in which people are reduced to slave labor. Legendary kung-fu warrior will save his people.

Modeling of a soldier character in progress. Just a quick occlusion render and a viewport capture for a wireframe.
I usually do turnaround drawings before getting into 3d but this time i just started modeling from that first rough sketch.

Love the style of the character. Very cool design on the arms and especially the hands. Can't wait to see some environments. Is your plan all CG or mixture of live action shots?

Thank you fore your comments.
Is your plan all CG or mixture of live action shots?
It will probably be all CG but I recently saw an old abandoned factory so maybe I will use it in backgrounds - I must see will it fit the style of the rest of the animation.

great start on the soldier.

only suggestion is that the mechanical parts are a little weird and too machanical ( so not enough steampunk )
looking forward to progress

Another soldier picture. I kept the model pretty close to the concept sketch but I just didn't like how it looked with tall dragon chimneys in 3d so I shortened them.

The dragon headed exhausts are a great touch. That would be a menacing sight, an army of these guys on the march belching steam. Love the gun design.

Thank you for your comment Wyatt Harris. I am planing to have several shots whit marching army but if I wont have enough time to create all the shoots that I have in mind, these shoots will be the first to go since they are not too important for the story. There will be shots of these guys fighting - they are defiantly in:)

I made a slightly more detailed concept sketch of the main character. He is small compared to the lumbering soldier but fast, packing a powerful kung fu punch with his steal feasts.

Here is the hero's face. Didn't put much effort in making the hair since it will be covered with straw hat. Well actually most of the face will be cowered by scarf and glasses but it didn't take much to model it since i just used an old base mesh, so there it is.I played whit making a fake skin material that would render quickly. No sub surface scattering just basic max scanline render.

Here is the textured hero character. I decided to remove the sleeve that was in the concept because the mechanical arm didn't read well through it (he looked like he had some big strange deformed shoulder). Finally finished with the fighters - next animation.

Here are some pctures to show a bit of my work flow on the shot.
On the top is a viewport capture of the low poly object and the rig (character studio biped) I used to animate the shots. This low poly version of the character is a must for my old computer if I want any kind of usable playback speed. The gray boxes behind the character are just something static in the scene so I can see the camera movement.
In the middle is a higher resolution model with completed cloth simulations. Bright colors help me spot any colision problems.
And the last is the rendered and composited scene (not yet completely finished)

Here are some background elements. Most of them are just static frames and some are animated like a flag for instance.

Here is one of composited backgrounds. The plan furthest from the camera is a quick photoshop painting. Then a bunch of fog layers which are made from procedural noise in after effects. And then rendered 3d elements with some more fog.It is blurry because the focus will be on the characters.

Well here is the finished work.
Sorry abou the bad sound quality - i made it myself but I realy have no talent for working with sound.

It is caled "STEAM MONKEY - THE LEGEND OF WONG FEI HUNG".
Wong Fei Hung was a martial artist, healer and revolutinary. He becama a Chinese folk hero. The real man lived in the time when China was changing under the influance from the western word. People who were unable to change were left behind. In this steampunk version he accepted the change to the extream meassure, grafting a pair of mechanical arms to his bodey. This is the only way he can become strong enough to defeat the soldiers of ever expanding oppresive Steam Empire. I made his enemie a mechanical samurai because of his figt against Japanese army in Taiwan.
So there it is, a little imaginary snippet from a life of a legend appearing in many awsome kung fu movies.
Hope you like it.

Congrats man!! you pulled it!
Great short, I love the crispy render you did there!
How did you achieve this crystal clean image.. what is the secret of your compressing??

DarkoV
02-04-2009, 01:31 PM
Thank you guys for your comments.
AIR - I used Riva FLV Encode to compress the AVI (no codec avi - uncompressed huge file).
That 640x480 (letterbox) avi was crated from original composite that was rendered in ful HD 1920x1080. All max rendering was done with scaneline renderer with full scene supersampling so average render time per frame was relativly fast (around 45 seconds on my old 2.8Ghz pentium D).Only occlusions wer renderd in mentalray (around 3 minutes per frame).
