Just a quickie concept painting for my idea. So I've been sketching for a week now, trying to find something relatively original that I can be passionate about. I have a few ideas, but this is the one I think is the best right now. It's the story of the sirens, really an old machine that has been playing forever, surrounded by the derelict ships of young aeronauts.
I'm really excited about this challenge, not only because of my love of steampunk, but that this is an actual challenge for me. I'm not the best painter of metal or water, and I struggle with space and depth, so I'm anxious to see how this comes out.

Another concept painting for the siren. Trying to find a look that jumps out. The cave through her stomach won't be nearly that big, but for the sake of the composition in the image I went with it. This challenge is really just turning into a series of randomly related images.

Thats a nice idea!
I like the first concept cause it has a really great "bigness".
The second sketch is also cool, but i dont like the mouth.
Its to squared, it should be round.

Like to see what comes next, greets and good luck, rasher73.

Thought I'd post what progress I'd made, This is basically the final composition. Still searching for background elements. Struggling with depth, but I knew I was going to. The ship is probably a stand in. Also, this is my first time painting in black and white first, and I'm wondering if that was a mistake :\ Any critiques are much appreciated!

Software: Photoshop

Figured I'd post some more of what I did tonight. Worked on the doors, the balloons, one of many ships in the water. Need to look up reference for those horns.

So I just started putting rocks and stuff into the background, with some more elements of debris, like the balloon hanging. Also added some debris to the water, extended the composition because it was feeling too tight. Need to start cleaning up the water and get color going.

Heres a closeup of what I've been working on lately.
Started experimenting in color, still haven't touched the ship, but I think I finally got an idea for that today so hopefully I'll get to it tonight. I feel like I've stepped backwards a bit because I have to paint over the entire thing again but I think its possible that I might still like it by the end of this. Lots of work to do!

I'm going to have to disagree with your choice to extend the scene here. This worked well (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showpost.php?p=5596763&postcount=7) because the ship and landing column frames the image and gives it a sense of depth and scale that you just lose when it's opened up.

Thanks for the crit - its possible that I may crop it back for the final image, but at that point the composition felt cramped to me, and I didn't feel any space.
I'll upload the latest when CGtalk stops pretending its in maintenance mode.

This is goign to be a close one. I almost gave up on it, but I really needed to step away from this for a minute. I started a whole other ship but then went back to my original design. We'll see if I make the deadline. Since I have a three day weekend it might give me a chance but this still needs some major color and detail work. I will give it my all, its been an effort just for me to stay on one project for this long.

17 hours left and so much more to go, but I like where its going...think i need some more foreground elements, or push the sirens into the background.
