View Full Version : bitmap mask
ddeveloping 11-16-2008, 09:30 PM i have a targa sequence with an alpha channel that i want to use as a mask for a certain layer. How do you do this? the only way i currently know how to create masks in to draw them with vectors in AE. But I really need to be able to use animated bitmap images with alpha channels. Thanks!

You need to have your targa sequence layer (with the alpha channel) above the layer of whatever you want to mask, and change the TrkMat of that layer to Alpha (TrkMat is a option on the same line as the 'Quality', 'Frame Blending' and 'Motion Blur' switches for a layer, but sometimes you need to toggle an option near the bottom of the screen to make it visible). This means the bottom layer will derive its transparency from the alpha channel of the layer above it.

That's option 1...
If you want the alpha channel to punch through all layers below in the comp you can change the blending mode to "stencil alpha or luminance".
If you need to use the alpha channel over and over across many layer you can use "set matte" or "set channel" effect on any layer you wish to get the alpha channel
let me know if it's unclear...
