I was never quite able to fake radiosity the way that I wanted it to look, but in the process, I learned quite a bit about volumetric light. This is the beginning of another WIP session. Helpfull C/C always welcome. Thanks for looking!

Looking good. Spontaniuosly, the table should reflect/bounce pretty much light into the room. That would be seen as the undersides of the shelfes would be more lit and probably the cornerlamp as well.

Maybe an omni light at the desk?

Cheers

Yea that lookd really good Dano! Did you use some slight turbulence in the Volumetric light? I am figuring out volumetric lights right now and this is a very god display of what it can do.

Hmm,very, very nice until now.How many lights are in use here,
or is it radiosity? Some highlight-blurs would be nice.
cheers rollmops :)

Oh very nice atmosphere :).

Just curious: did you use any of the settings of my 'window-light' file? I noticed the lamp has a quite distinct shadow, just as I got.

Did you use some slight turbulence in the Volumetric light?

Using slight turbulence for lights in general is a nice touch when aiming for realism .

OK, here's how I have the lights set up. I hope you can understand. The parallel light is the sun, it's strength is 300% and area shadows are used with an accuracy of 100%, the parallel spot is the volumetric light. The lights at the bottom are used for fill and have strengths of 5% and 10% respectively. I'd be happy to send you a stripped down C4D file if you like. Just give me your e-mail address. I'm still working on the lights. I can never get the just right but I'm still trying.

Update. Again, this is a lighting study. I'm constantly thrown back by getting lights right so that is my focus right now. Thanks for looking.

It looks amazing!!
It's great that you can use normal raytracing instead of the slower radiosity to achieve this kind of realism. It makes it much more animation compatible and easier to change because of the quick render times. :)
Way to go dano!

p.s. Did you check your PM's yet? :bounce:

very impressive.

not only the lightning settings, but man, all those details in this scene.
i would be interested to know if u made this scene using a room that already exists as a reference, or if u designed and put together all the elements.
i really like the armchair, the plant, and overall the fact that this scene has "character" (dunno if this expression is correct though).
congrats for the materials too, they contribute perfectly to the scene's realism.
if i had a crit, it would be about the shadow casted on the right wall. it looks a bit like there is dust on the wall, if u see what i mean, like something has burnt and left a black trace.

anyway, very nice job.

i'm interested to see your C4D file if u r still willing to send it by email.

Could you share the lightsettings with us mortals :p

@ Shademaster: I hope I don't dissappoint you too much but radiosity was used for this scene. I've been working at trying to simulate radiosity but the proper method has eluded me so far. I had lots of help in my last thread but havn't really been able to simulate it just right. Checking PM's right now. :)

@ Deestrakt: I almost always have reference for my renders. The results more often than not, always take on a life of their own though. I like to see examples of the objects I plan on putting in my scene but then I modify the image to get the results I'm looking for. Thanks so much for the kind words. The "dust" you see on the walls are nothing more than radiosity artifacts. When I'm working on a scene that uses radiosity, I use very low settings because I tend to do dozens of test renders and time is always an issue. For my final renders, I up the settings though. ;)

@ Spearhead: I'd be happy to e-mail you a stripped down file. Just give me your e-mail address.

Take care guys! It's always a treat to hear feedback!

 Radiosity?! NOOOooo... :) nevermind man, it just looks so nice I can even live with the radiosity render. Hmm, it might be interesting to try this without radiosity. It will probably need a lot more works but I'd like to try it and compare it.

WOW! I've never had a PM before, and when i check, I have 6. I'll send all of you the scene file later. I'm in the middle of a render right now and it will take a little while. I'm so glad that this has generated some interest!! dano

It looks really nice Dan! But ... I'm seeing some inconsistent shadows in the volumetric noise:

http://bellsouthpwp.net/A/d/AdamTrachtenberg/DanPic.jpg

Notice how the shadows outlined in green are parallel, as they should be, but there's some convergence (divergence) with the shadows marked in blue. Also, I'm not sure where those blue shadows are coming from! It's almost as though you have two volumetric lights there, and one of them isn't set to parallel or distant.

Hi Adam, very observant of you. I have used 2 lights. One for the actual illumination and another one for the volumetric effect. Both have different shadow settings (illumination is set to area, and the volumetric light is set to soft shadow) I noticed it but was hoping that the rest of you wouldn't.

oh sht Dan!!! Looking your interiors make me think I've to go back to that kind of rendering instead of trying to teach myself the principles of animations.

Really nice render!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't try to fake radiosity, it's like to try to fake soft IK with 100000 keyframe positions in animations!!!!!

Thanks guys!

@Claudio72: Never give up on animation, that's what we all are working for, isn't it??

I second that!! If I don't know what to do and the deadline is lurking, I will always find my answer here! And if it isn't here I just ask what I don't know and I have a response almost as soon as I hit refresh. Besides that, there is great feedback on finished work and WIP's!
I'll toas to CGTalk
