XanBob 06-15-2003, 07:40 PM Hey guys:D
Just playing around with max... I'll post some updates soon.
Do you think it would pass as a photograph?

Wow. it almost look like a photo.
But, the blur in the detph of field goes to fast. And maybe you could put up some wrinkels in the coffee. That are the two things I notice that it isn't a photo, but if you changes that I will have to take look really good if it a photo or 3D.
Well done on show some wire, so that we sure now that is is 3D:thumbsup:

I like the image, but if you want to improve it, maybe the texture in the cloth is too small, that's the reason it looks blurred? Could be the DOF, in that case tweak it to focus on the subject.
A bit of froth in the coffe may help as well. By the way, is it sugar free? I don't see the sugar cubes melting in the wireshot!!
You ask for photorealism..

Hey Maxmare:D
Cheers for the crits, lets keep in mind this is WIP though. I'm working on a nice texture for the sugarcubes... I'm thinking of using some SSS, should look nice. The cloth his quite high res, it's the damn DOF that blures it... had an issue with the units but it's better now :applause:. I've just remodelled the handle on the jug, after more careful observation of the reference I decided it was too low down. I'll post an update soon.
Any more ideas out there?

I really like the sugar, but i thought the ceramic looked better white. Maybe a little wrinkles in the table cloth would look nice. But really i dont know what else you can do, what a great render!
Oh, did you use HDRI for the reflection maps?
XanBob

Hey Hazmatman :D
I use 3dsmax5, vray, and PS7. Indeed I used a hdri for both the reflections and the lighting, can u guess which one?:p
I'd like to give it a go with a hdr of my own, though I've not yet made one!...
About the color of the ceramic, it's exactly the same as before but as I had mentioned, that last shot has not yet been through Photoshop. I did however change the rotation of the HDR map, perhaps I should change this back to the original?... Any thought on this would be really welcome!!

Yet another update...
http://www.zenadsl5149.zen.co.uk/SUGAR_DOF.jpg
I still have to improve the cloth texture, happy with the sugar so far... Frothy milk next! But that's gonna have to wait til tomorrow, need to get some sleep...
Still welcome your coments! I know you're out there:surprised :p

Great Job! Some suggestions maby:
The holder of the coffeecup (right) could be maby a bit more like the holder of the milkcup on left. Maby some bubles 2 or 3 in diffrent sizes could look good too. The bubbles could be placed between the spoon and the surface of the liquid.
But it looks very good now also.

Congratulations, you are already there. Froth is optional in my opinion. You are the one that has to call it done.
Now it really looks like a photograph so mission acomplished. Now on the other hand you are an artist and should mind about composition and creating and impact on the viewer other than the technical "wow, it looks real" which you have just achieved. So maybe the wrinkles in the cloth are highly desireable, along with some scattedred cluttery as it would be in a human made scene...maybe slightly upper level vision(so your cloth isn't shown in the distance where it doesn't help)..or some milk dripping from the jar, or some almond/nuts/mangoes.
If somebody doesn't believe it looks real look at ME3D real photo posted in other thread which I thought it was cg and "didn't look real at all":
http://www.me3d.tv/garry/Temp/orangeorange.jpg
But then again, I could be wrong. (Thanks ME3D)
