View Full Version : How to make Undo easier?
HONG KONGer 06-15-2003, 05:26 PM instead of hitting z on the keyboard or from Edit menu?
|
|
Add it to your shelf, or I recommend getting a 5 button mouse and assigning it to a mouse button :)
I don't know if we ever going to find anything easier than hitting z to undo. Looking and moving back in the history will take longer. If you have a lot of undos you want to do, then use the script editor where it has all the previous steps displayed. Then you can move or jump to any previous steps you want quickly.
Maybe as an alternative, you can get a Speech software and link it to the z undo key. Then just say or yell out "undo" to the microphone everytime you want to undo. If this works out well, we might want to create a link to "create a character" or "animate a crying character". This will be in the far future, I think. :)

well if hitting z is too troubleful why don't you just buy a wacom and place it under your desk and everytime when you want to undo something you push it with the pen between your toes ;)

Hey, great thread. I 've had a problem for a while, but I didn't know where to post the question...this looks like a good place for it. I want to find a way to start my computer without actually touching it or anything else, and without leaving my bed. Any help with this would be great. Also, if you could find a way for Maya to automatically make a demo reel for me(a good one) without me leaving my bed, that would be great too. Thanks in advance.

but its all worth it , cause pressing Z everytime you wanna undo is hard.

Actually, having a baboon for an intern is NOT a good idea. I came back from a weekend at Vegas once, and found a stack of baboon butt photocopies strewn about. PLUS, anytime his girlfriend would come over to hang out, she'd just parade around, flaunting his colored nether region like a Calvin Klein model on a runway. VERY distracting...

It's sounds easy to hit the z key, but sometimes it really have a bit of trouble to do this.
In my case, I'm in the process of learning Maya. I place my Maya book on top of my Notbook's keyboard. If I have to press the z key, I think you can guess how trouble it would be for me to do it each time.
And for the people who has their keyboard below their desk. If they have to press the key, they will have to: (1)pull out the keyboard, (2) look down at the keyboard, (3) find the z key, (4) look back to the monitor. How trouble is it?
All I want is to create a little icon so that I can just click on it once and do the job.

Yes for me its a huge problem.. my cat sits on my keyboard.. i keep books on my Wacom and I have curtains on my monitors. So imagine how difficult it is for me to do something simple as splitting a polygon face....
1. Pick up cat with right hand
2. Press space to get hotbar with left hand and pick books with chin and chest and hold the cat and the pen and move the cursor over my wacom to chose Split Polygon option in the menu, while using the left leg to move the curtains aside.
3. Now use left hand to press Alt and rotate the viewport and... aaaargghhh!!!!! crash !! my cat my cat.. sorry brb !!!:scream:

You know, I've been doin that for a while now and I've never realized how truly inefficient it was. To fix the problem, I now have my keyboard drawer setup with a complex sytem of pullys that are tied to my fingers, so whenever i need to get my keyboard out I just put four fingers up and six fingers down. Voila! However, this makes it incredibly difficult to hit that dreaded "Z" key (after I finally find it), because when I go to hit it, the keyboard slides back in. I've sent this bug into AW and am waiting for a reply, but if anyone has some sort of workaround please let me know.

But womanonfire, the question it self did not make sense. The better thing would be getting a bookholder and putting it beside your monitor. Why does he have to put the book on his keyboard?
And I guess he "should" be using the z key instead of clicking icons. Hongkonger you might also want to consider learning the Hotbox and keyboard in general if you want to get anything done in Maya or anywhere for that matter.

MDuffy
06-18-2003, 04:54 PM
There are so many other keys that are useful on the keyboard in addition to undo, that I think it is probably best for you to learn to work with a keyboard instead of working around it. For example, how in the world are you moving around your viewports without the Alt key? How do you pull up the hotbox without spacebar? How do you select multiple verts without shift and control and dragging?
In all seriousness, I think your best bet is to put your book somewhere other than on top of your keyboard.
And if you have a keyboard drawer, I'd suggest getting a better desk. :p Or a wireless keyboard if you need to move the keyboard out of the way that often.
Cheers,

Sometimes if my neighbor isn't busy I get her to stand in my garage and hit the button. She doesn't like it too much, but shes old as has nothing better to do.

i think i read on here someone had troubles with there keyboard under there desk? they said soemthing about having to look at it? im sure most will agree with me, the more you learn maya "3d" you get the keys memorized, then you never have to look. if i need to snap a vertice, i dont have to look if i need to go into object mode anything i rarley rarley look. so i dont think it would be a problem, once you start learning were everything is and its so repetitive, the need to look is not realy needed. im just saying i dont think its a problem.

Golly jeepers, I never meant to hurt anyone (except that one homeless guy in Boise). HONG KONGer you've got 84 posts under your belt, you'd think someone who spent that kind of time on these boards would know what kind of response an absurd question like this would get. "Can you make Undo easier?" the answer is "no" there's nothing easier than hitting ONE KEY. Move the book off your keyboard and that'll fix your problems (well, at least the undo problem). Here's a few suggestions: move the book to the side of the keyboard, or put it on your lap, tie it to a dog, or put it in a fish tank..there are so many choices and all of them are better than putting it on your keyboard. Besides, MDuffy was right...how the hell do you get ANYTHING done with crap all over your keyboard. Use your artistic creativity to come up with a soloution until Microsoft Mindreader© comes out or get womanonfire all doped up and have him/her/it come over and press the key for you.

I think the best way is to assign the undo command to my 4D mouse button, but my mouse doesn't have a software with it, is it possible to do it in Maya?
The Cross
06-19-2003, 07:28 AM
HONG KONGer. You'll never advance at a video game if you don't hold the controller....The same for all 3D software.
If you want to get far with Maya, you have to keep in mind that your working with a mouse and Keyboard.
Here is a faw tips....
- You needn't memorize every single key...Just start with these...
Q W E R T Y - These key's ( yes the ones on your keyboard ) are a simplistic way to selecting your basic tools.
When working with Maya. It's best to keep one and on the mouse, and the other hand on the keyboard.....
- Basically keep your thumb rested on the ALT key right under the Z button.
Leaving your hand there eliminates the need to make your arm travel back and fourth from the keyboard. It grants you easy access to the z button and the space bar and just about every other key.
You must change you state of mind when working with Maya as well. In other words don't be lazy with it...Just hit the key and get it over with.
This time around i'm really trying to help you out. Keep the books off the keyboard and you'll be respecting yourself.
Forget moving the undo button anywhere else...It's perfect where it is now....And remember "LEAVE THE THUMB ON THE ALT KEY". Try it for 15 minutes a day at the least, and if you don't pick it up within a day or 2..Then there is no hope for you being prouductive with Maya no matter what you know about it.

I understand hotkeys are important and I'll be happy to memorize and master all hotkeys in Maya. But the design of my desk just don't allow me to put my book aside.
Now I have already put undo in the "custom" shelf tab but I have to switch to that tab everytime I use it. I would like to know how to put it on the thin toolbar on top of the shelf or map it to my 4D mouse.
And if you are not going to give out answer then keep silent so you won't waste your and my time in this thread.

So we have no right to post anything because YOU think our posts is not an answer for you?You own this forum? We are wasting your time?Actually YOU are wasting your time, you put the goddamn book on the keyboard(please put it somewhere else or just throw it away, dont use it),you cant use/learn to use hotkeys.
And let me tell you honestly, your question is extremely stupid and crazy! Why stupid?First, you put a book on the keyboard and whine about you cant press the z key,and you dont like any answer provided by everyone, and let me tell you,if ur gonna learn maya, you have to use A LOT OF hotkeys,so please remove your book from the goddamn keyboard!Second,it can be solved easily by anyone who have the IQ higher than 30.
That's why people dont bother answering you.Im really shame on you.
So you want some answer? Here are few tips,if I have not enough space on the desk,I'd...
1.)Switch off your notebook, read the maya book, until u notice there are a undo icon(Put it on the toolbar? Not until you can write your own script!),then turn on your notebook, put the book back on your keyboard.
2.)Go and get a chair, put the chair near you,and put the book on the chair. So you can touch the z key,and read the book.
3.)Go and kill urself.

Put the book in your lap. Seriously.
Or read it somewhere else and then go try the techniques on your computer. If you can't retain info from the time you set down the book to the time you go over to your keyboard, then you have more problems than where to put your book.
Or use the online tutorials and swap between them and Maya. That's how I learned Maya. No book needed.
Trying to avoid using your keyboard is a monumental waste of your time. Seriously.

I hate personal attacks. people doesn't waste time answering even to silly questions.if they do so, people asking can only say thanks to them for sharing their knowledge to everyone.
hongkonger, u got great replies at first, so if u don't want even to use your mouse, find a better place to put your book, or even read first and then remember what u read.
your keyboard also is larger than an opened book. so the z key can be left free put it on the right side.
any pro use the keyboard shortcuts to speed the workflow in every package, even windows OS so since u will find that u will HAVE to use them, why not starting now?
also u will have to read other books, and so this thing will keep on forever if u don't find an easy place to put your book.
i am talking seriously. i also had a very small desk.
i bought one new large desk 3 years ago, and so i have the place i need for books.
so with this, i gave to u 2 solutions to solve the prob. choose one pls.
cheers.

I say Listen to Sheep Factory (I totally understand your point) that you need to refer to your manual for help and in maya hit F1... Buy or get a desk that is big enough, place chairs near by and for GAWD's sack be kind to your fellow CGer's. Ypu never know when you'll apply to the company that one of works at..... Peace out Fellow CGER's................ NUFFSAID...END THIS THREAD...
