I have been desiging a fighting game with a few of my freinds. Before we go to long I would like to know your opnion on a few things. What do you guys feel is important for a fighting game. ( soul caliber, mortal kombat, ) I know that you all are very busy But I would be honored if you would take the time to vote on my poll. It will really help us in the long run. here is a few images of what we have been working on so far.

A fighting game is all about the actual gameplay and feedback, the graphics themselves only need to convey this, nothing more. You need to make the fighting feel as smooth and natural as possible, to have it be as much an extension of yourself as a keyboard or gamepad/joystick can, and not let it just become a random button mashing = win scenario. Each hit that connects needs to feel satisfying too, everything needs to feel like it's got weight.

What made Tekken good for instance was it's feel of weight and responsiveness as well as the smooth transitions between moves. What made Street fighter great was all the special hidden moves and a very easy control layout (for the time), also great speed and and satisfaction at being able to pull off the moves. What made Mortal Kombat was the controversy, sorry MK fans, but as a game it never felt all that great to play even though at the time the digitized characters and fatalities/gore made for something new at that time, it was all about the graphics but I don't think you could repeat that formula for success these days, it's gotta be about the game.

Really cool work man keep it up  I think the most important thing could be in a fighting game is nice easy controls and advanced effects you may use some short cinematics for some advanced or special moves like fatality and animality finishes in Mortal Kombat
Hope you the best of luck in your project

Any game is about gameplay in the first place, and graphics goes second. If there's no good gameplay, any level of graphics won't save it. It holds true for any genre of game.

I didn't even consider physics, but I guess you have a point. Real physics in a fighting game are just as important than the combat.

I never play fighting games, (other than Super Smash Bros) and I sat down with a friend one time and played Soul Calibur. He loves the game, and played it often, it was my first time. I beat him over half the rounds we played by simply mashing one button over and over. The move's range was far, and he could never get to me. This, in my opinion, is the sign of an awful fighting game.

And an awful friend...

The mechanics of the gameplay are very important. But all of the choices in the poll are important.

Its sad to see everyone picking combat( which I choose as well). As an artist theres not really much you can do about that aspect of the game..

For me, its controls. They've got to be responsive! Smooth button patterns that'll allow you flow from combos to parrys to supers.... Third Strike all the way! :D

Killer Instinct had a brilliant combo system that allowed the new players to feel like they were achieving something but at the same time the dedicated player could also show their efforts with ultra combos and combos that lead straight into a finishing move. I can't believe I used to play that with a D-pad!

Graphics also go a long way for me, its got to visually appealing.

And hot chick's of course...

Agreed. Without good animation it is imposible for the game to feel refined.
The gameplay IS the animation (well, not literaly...).
