View Full Version : I Need Texturing Help
hkbasravi 06-15-2003, 04:54 PM How can I layer Textures in Max 4.2.
For example, if I was placing a variety of stickers on a race car?

I did it once with a Composite. The first slot was the base car paint job. The rest of the slots were Mask each with a colour and alpha. Then I used Place to um... place each one. My poor lil' computer choked pretty hard.

Is "Composite" a type of Texturing Technique the same as Multi-Sub Object and Blend, etc?
And what about "Place"

hi
that's very simple, that's why they made map channels.
give every map a different map channel no., and then for every map apply a new uvwmap modifier, and put in it the map channel the no. of it, and then adjust it's place on ur model.
hope that was helpful:buttrock: :applause:

Hkb There are some really great tuts linked of this here forum.:)
hi hkbasravi,
You can use a blend material or a composite map. Both use a mask to blend two materials/maps, or you can use the image alpha as the mask.
The advantage of using a blend material is that each material has it's own set of options ie, diffuse, specular, opacity etc. This means that is say you were applying a sticker to a car you can give the sticker different shading properties from the car paint, ie dull the reflection, specular change from metal to b-linn shading etc.
If you use a composite map (which you apply the same way you would as a bitmap except you choose 'composite' as the map type) then you can only blend the picture and the paint and not the surface properties (unless you go into a world of pain with maps/masks for all the materials properties.)
hope that gives you a starting point.
As S_3D_A said there are tuts on this and you should prob check em out.
cheers,
phil
