View Full Version : Object: Desert Eagle
Garma 06-15-2003, 03:37 PM guns guns guns, yea I know. I need it for a project (3d shooter) I am working on. I am pretty new to 3D modelling, but I really wish to learn how to create the cool stuff I see here. This is just a first attempt.
this one is 533 faces, not triangulated yet. I am using Maya 4.0. I am really sorry for the slow server but I have problems with the other. I will update as soon as they are fixed.

Comments & Crits are really appreciated, especially on flaws and polycount etc.
thanks!

Honestly, it looks a tad flat from the first two untextured renders. That's likely because of the lighting, but the skin looks okay, no apparent stretching, except on the front of the handle. That's pretty good for a first attempt at skinning :)
Only problem I see is that there is too much detail modeled in to the gun. . . The grooves and such, these should all be done in the texture to add depth (bump mapping will also help with that.) A side from that the model looks good. You should really reduce the faces as much as possable, a weapon in a 3d shooter should only be a few hundred tri's, (that means if you've used quads when you where modeling it the tri count is doubled so it's way to high.) I'd personally say drop it down to under 300 tri's and it should be fine.

thanks both of you, now that you mention it I agree about the flatness. I focused on the side of it mainly, but I will fix that. Dhin: I thought modelling the grooves would improve the level of reality, but with the skin I saw it doesn't make that much of a difference. I'll use bumpmapping then.
What did you use as a referance for it? I only ask cause I'm working on a Beretta 93 R and I can't find any really good resource site for it and thought you might have some helpful ideas.

Well your off to a good start for a beginner. I think all the problems have been covered by other posters so I'll say keep up the good work.

hai Dhin, finding good references was a little tough since guns aren't allowed here in holland. A google-image search "desert eagle" resulted in lots of good pics, especially if you select high resolution searching. That is, for side views. I modelled with a side-image only, no front since I couldn't find it. Also I couldn't find good images of the back. You can see that in the model I guess, its why the model looks a little flat.
