Hello people,

couldn't resist to join this challenge.
It's based on an old character I drew several years ago.
His Name is Dr. Dread an he's evil (no doubt about that).
He's the main Villain of a FPTS (First person team shooter)and wants to control the world with his army of Robot-Butchers.
You and your team will have to fight your way through waves of killer-bots to finally meet Dr.Dread and get rid of this menace.

here's the doodle:

Dr. Dread is cool, I like him, he's got style. Would be a good solid 3D model. Go for it dude.

Great start. I like the concept. The black eyes are also very cool!

H13
06-15-2003, 07:25 PM
THX :D

I was thinking about some details for his eye-glasses (they are actually meant to be some cyber implants)
maybe some tech stuff around the black part....but I'll see to that later on.
I'm going to finish the rough model first and then I'll go into the detail-work ;)

Kenter

Looks OK,well in fact real good. But too plastic. But I quess you are not thinking reality.Sketch is good, but the guy is very un-appealing,the mouth in the skecth is horrific.
I think your skills would be better put to use with another character.
Srill what you have so far as a model does look well done.:)

H13
06-15-2003, 07:58 PM
Well it's a stilized comic-like character.
The challenge guidelines didn't say anything about
a must for realistic human characters ;)

And of course he's unappealing .....well....
I'd say..... He's an evil man !

:D

Kenter
06-15-2003, 08:01 PM
But to play hin in a game even if un-appealing he must have something more speacial to keep the gamers attention.Still that is just my thought.Your work is good for sure. And in the end more than likely I will really like him.So continue,we shall see.

Hey great sketch...i do like the drawing a lot, you should make a comic with that character. Like it a lot....:)

Well the 3D...itīs just the begining, will not say anything for now just wait for more images.

Hey that little Robot is such a great Character,
really love him...

Keep going...

THX Guys :D

@ Kenter: be patient :)
I'll make him as spectacular as possible, I promise. Just for you so that you won't be dissapointed ;)

I'm going to change a few things on the character, since it is a very old drawing of mine and I'm not quite satisfied with the overall design anymore.

really really great model so far! I hope the rest of him will look this flawless and stylish.

Some possible points of critique:
- the bottom lip shouldn't be so pronounced over the whole width, let it flow into the mesh towards the outside
- the eyes look stuck on, i don't think that works very well with your model, maybe integrate them a little better, at least give a 'hint' by extruding the surrounding mesh a little

i totally understand if you just wanted things to be this way though

! Keep us updated :airguitar

looks pretty cool, but way to cold, harsh. But with textures things could get warmer. The collar bone sticks out too too far.
It does have a good style. We will see how things turn out later.

06-19-2003, 03:57 AM
Well my first thought is that I like the overall model. It's in fact a very WIP.

To me it can go to excellent or just stay good from this point. It will really depend on the textures, the rig,etc,etc...

I think the lower lip should be softened a bit,not too much, just blended in better. The calves have that almost "TOON" exageration to them,I like them however, they give him that extra bit of style.

Cool touch with the hair.I think as of now nice job.It does look like it could get even better,I see promise here.I'll keep an eye out, overall a nice job H13.

this really fuels my motor ;)

@ Virtuoso:

Fist already pointed out that lip-thing, I'll see to it later this day (need to reinstall my OS first, so wish me luck :hmm: )

And yes, it's definitely a toon-style model
(that's why he also has some very big hands ;) )

i love it man!

with the better lighting setup and the creases it looks really really great already

i think the arms could do with a little more definition, they are ok but seem a bit plain compared to the rest of the model

i kinda like the bottom lip by now btw ;)

I looove the outfit:D

one thing that bugs me though, its the head and how it connects to the outfit, seems that its just plopped on top of it instead of the outfit surrounding the neck area.

WIP :wip:

Hi everybody.
I started texturing my Model.
Now I need your help.
I have 2 different Textures for Dr.Dreads arms.
1 Texture is with hairy Arms (like in my doodle).
1 Texture is without the hair.
I'm not quite sure which one to use since I like both.
So it's up to you...what do u say?
Which one do u like better ?

first of all the textures look really good man, especially the view from behind w/o hair, very realistic!

i like the idea of him being hairy ;) but you overdid that a bit.. try a mix of the two, remove hair in some areas (who has that much hair, esp on the shoulders (*shudder*)) and make it less opaque

Hello H13.Looking very good .I said earlier that it was a good model, but I still needed to see more to give it that very good model stamp of approval.Well it's now very good indeed.I like your style and feel you give to your creations, this one and the last one I saw of you in the past challenge.

I think you must lose the hair however (Shudders right alongside Fist...;) )

Textures look good too.Perhaps a touch more vibrant, just a touch, but that's just nit-picking.Finish him up,you have a very nice model to show off here,I look forward to seeing it finished, nice job.

Nice looking model, good look and good texture work. The hair I have to agree is a turn-off on the overrall quality of the model however. The facial expression too is not to my liking. But still overall it is one fine piece of work.Just some taste issues on my part I quess.Well done still buddy. :)

Just got to say I like the texture work and the body alot. The hair too is really cool, nice look. But the face is totally off to me,the mouth rea the eye brow area, but it's probably just me,a personal indifference.Still this is a really cool character otherwise.

Hi ppl,
Update time!!

I've done some texture changes (thx for the hints, Fist...hope u like it)

reduced the arm-hair and textured the head (suit mapping still messed up though)

and I managed to rig the Dr.
pretty fast, I might add, which either has to do with improved rigging tools (which I doubt 'cause I've done pretty much the same as last time) or with improved technique in modelling anatomically correct (despite some comic-proportion aspects).
This leads me to the conclusion that CG-Challenges improved my modelling skills!
THX very much to all the people on the CG-Network !!!!!

and here's the update (including semi-final pose) :

http://www.h13.biz/Mainframe/3D/Dread_wip_0709e.jpg

and a closeup of the face:

http://www.h13.biz/Mainframe/3D/Dread_wip_0709f.jpg

c&c welcome as always.
to-do list:

-finetune rigging
-clean up the messed suit mapping
- adding neck-cables and body-armor parts

great work from germany :D

the veins on the arm look a little flat (esp on the left one), i think you should smooth them out a little in your bump map

H13
07-10-2003, 01:01 AM
hi fist,
thx :D

yyes the veins....I use a smooth value of 3.0 for closeups and a smooth value of 1.5
for farther away perspectives.....

wellll....I just forgot to adjust the value for the closeup
(it's true!....no excuse ;) )

swag
07-10-2003, 01:17 AM
very effective mesh here - didnt u have problems with the creases by posing him or do u modeling them after?
the abdomen looks a little flat with this arms i think he has some abdominal muscles -

H13
07-10-2003, 01:33 AM
hi swag,

yes the abdomen does look a little flat, I noticed it too after rendering.
I think I'll ave to get back to moving vertices around, which is possible even after rigging. As for the creases: they have to be done before rigging because once the mesh is rigged, adding or removing polys
results in a complete destruction of the rig
(at least this was my experience while working with Character Studio).
The real problem areas for modelled seams/creases are the pelvis/upperleg area and the area right beneath the buttocks ;)

this results in a bit of extra rig-tuning, but the look is worth the work (most of the time) ;)

wow why did i miss this one?
very nice work, but you have ther some trinagles which are not necessary and which will be removed with just a few clicks ;)

and whats up with his "eyes"? That looks kinda weird :)

Virtuoso
07-10-2003, 10:08 AM
All in all I think this turned out very well.It had a nice start with potential, and for the most part it looks like you reached it.Nice arms, shape, depth to the textures.Pose is quite good. The overall style is very good.Another very good piece for your portfolio H13.................. :applause:

H13
07-10-2003, 11:49 AM
Thx Virtuoso and Neox :D

to the triangels: I know it's supposed to be better with quads, but I'm used to the tri-method
I started with low-poly modelling

Also I like to have some visual control over my polys without switching between 'edges only' and 'show all lines' (I hate those dotted lines in the quads....makes me dizzy watching them)

Especially for seams I like to have some tris ( easily done with Meshtools: select Vertices -> Quad Menu -> connect 1)

to the eyes: It has been pointed out that it looks strange already....well...it was an old idea. I decided to change some things from my old sketch to the model, but I definitely wanted to keep the eye-idea. Actually these aren't eyes, but rather some sort of lenses that are implanted where his eyes used to be. At the time I drew this character, i had already been experimenting with some sort of implanted cyber-goggles in other sketches as i got the idea of trying something new, more simple, but of an even fierce character.
funny thing:
I did the sketch in 1999 and in 2002 I read Neuromancer for the first time. Was I surprised that Gibson had the same idea with one of his Characters: Molly (those who have read the book will get a better idea of what these black lenses should be)

;)

Virtuoso

Now i understand the eyes,it makes it all clear.Once again Nice job H13.

Quite the nice model.I know the eyes are an old concept you liked and did, but they are the windows to the soul, and your model loses that soul without them,at least to me,and the large bumps around them too are not to my liking.
But still believe it or not, this is one of my favorite entries, because all the rest sure is a nice piece of work. :)
