View Full Version : should i wait...?
fadegboye 06-15-2003, 12:25 PM Hello people,
is it possible to still tweak weights while and after animation? I have got a layer with segmented the prim that is parented to my bones and another layer with the hi_res model that is smooth skinned. I have been setting it up for about 2days now and I want to start animating the character...is it a good idea to finish painting weights first before animating or can I do it at anytime?
Cheers...:hmm:

It SHOULDN'T matter, but I think that people will tell you (out of superstition or whatever) that it's not a good idea, and they may be right.
What you might consider doing is referencing your rig into another scene, then continuing to paint weights on that rig and animating with the referenced copy.

what doesn't work about it?
Referencing is, in some ways, broken, but if ALL you're doing is loading in a rigged character, moving parts around, and keyframing them, it should work OK.

well i think it is the process i really can't get right...like what do you select as your reference or how you link them....I am sure it is the process that I am doing wrong...that is why it does not work!

you put your rigged character in a Maya file, choose File > Create Reference..., and then the objects in that file come in as referenced objects. You can animate them, but if you change the rig in the other file, the next time you open this one you should see the change.
once youve done this you should not change naming for your joints, or your joint spacing, otherwise you'll end up with nasty problems. However, altering weights should be fine.
