Here is a quick rundown of what im trying to do:

Im making a planet and i want to make the surface texture completley procedural so that i dont have to use a massive BMP on the surface. I want to be able to zoom in relativley close and maintain good quality. Furthermore i want to have all the planets major rivers flow from one location outward so i want to be able to put more vegetation along the edges of those 12 rivers.

My problem:

I dont know how to get the procedural benefits and have enough control to say "i want long curvy/meandering green lines coming away from the main water source"

Any suggestions?

You want your cake and the ability to eat it too. That's not fair! :)

Seriously, that's one of the major disadvantages of procedurals, it's tough to get a specific type of feature in a specific spot.

This software tries to solve this problem...

May be worth looking into.

And here's a tutorial on how to use multiple maps to get lots of detail up close without the need for a 500k map.
