This is my concept for the Steampunk Challenge.

First off I am new to, not only CGsociety, but also to digital painting. Hopefully I learn a lot through this comp.

My concept is of Vulcan, the acclaimed god of fire and craftsmanship in Roman mythology.

Another concept having him show more of a craftsmen side opposed to a blacksmith...

I've opted to go another route by using the Faust legend.

I've started to lay down the greys and flats to get the atmosphere of the image right before adding colours or details.

Hello David, welcome to the wonderful world of digital painting. I did my first digital painting for one of these challenges here also. It is a lot of fun and there are a lot of artists here that give great advice. Also a ton of great tutorials and other threads in this site that may give you some tips and tricks. I love the sketches and concept. Good luck :)

@Ivy
Hey there. Thanks for the kind words. I am slowly making my way around the forum to see what I can learn. This is quite weird actually... Wasn't some of your artwork showcased on an ImagineFX DVD?

Hey David,

Nice pencil sketch, like a lot the concept, Faust legend sounds really great for this challenge.
Try to block first all the image, dont stop in details in this first stage, work from background to foreground, less contrast on the background and more on the foreground. You has two principal light sources, the moon and the book, think they can work really well on the image. For the moon use a cold color (blue) and for the book a warmer color (red and oranges) Take some references on pics of faces lighted with a lamp from down, and picks with back light moon. Only some ideas :) Good luck and looking forward for more updates. Cheers!! :beer:

I think this is going to look really awesome. First thing that jumps out at me is his hands look a bit small. Otherwise, looking good... keep working :)

I've altered the background to include a flight platform for the landing steam-blimp in the sky. There's still quite a bit I need to add, but here's where it's at so far.

Thanks for the advice. I try to layout the idea before starting any details, but it never goes as planned. Lol. But that's why I'm here. Here to learn! Ayyy!
