Hi everyone!
I finnaly gathered my thoughts, I joined video forum cos I prefer motion over stills, and I have big intention of finishing this challenge, unlike 3 previous challenges before.

I have pretty simple idea to begin with, it might get complicated, but I hope it wont.
I performed little search on this forum to make sure nobody has started this idea already, cos it would be dull to have multiple entries doing same thing, and I found out that this topic is free.

Anyway, my idea is a tale of Sisyphus in Greek mythology, son of Aeolus and founder and king of Corinth. Renowned for his cunning, he was said to have outwitted even Death. For his disrespect to Zeus, he was condemned to eternal punishment in Tartarus. There he eternally pushed a heavy rock to the top of a steep hill, where it would always roll down again.

Im going to work around the eternal punishment in Tartarus.

Since Sisyphus was a cunning man, I can't imagine that he would't have done something to make his punishment little bit easier, at least in Steampunk world that is :)

So, Im telling a steampunk story about Sisyphus which is building a machine to ease his eternal punishment.
Im not going to tell anything about the machine since the idea is to keep it secret, in the trailer, till he very end of it.

The trailer would look something like,,,

1. Sisyphus thrown to tartarus, being explained by the voice what is the punishment.

2. It becomes obvious to him that the punishment is to big to do it from day to day just like that with his bare arms.

3. We see him pounding metal, melting it, molding, working with melted iron, everything is too hot, welding,, riveting.... eveyrythign you can think of on this "blacksmith" subject.

4. In the end, we see some short shots, like in the car advertising, slick lines, shines, reflections, the machine is finished, but we still dont see the whole deal..

5 Final shots of the trailer reveal the machine, we see it together with sisyphus, making his job whole lot easier now.

The end.

Summary:

Two models with some accesories: 1 SISYPHUS and 2 MACHINE
two environments: 1 STEEP HILL OF JUNK (where Sisyphus supposed to roll his big piece of compressed junk ball up that pile)
2 METAL FOUNDRY

Im gonna start collecting reference, and hopefully, shortly, I will have something to show!

My heart sank when I saw your thumbnail.

Just to let you know that I was doing a similar idea for the image category (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=278&t=694919), but I guess that's the way it goes.

Good luck with it.

Hi David, I hope you are not changing the subject cos of my thread friend.
We are not in the same forum, and if we were, there's nothing wrong on taking same subject,
I just thought, if I saw 2-3 threads going about same theme, in video forum, I'd probably have another go, with something else.
In other words, I would love to see another original attempt on Sisyphus in image category.

In the end, thx, Im gonna need luck where Im going.

Hi Damir - no it's cool. I just wasn't sure how concerned you would be because you'd mentioned doing a search. I guess we would all like to have unique ideas but with so many people entering there are bound to be overlaps, especially with the more well-known myths.

What surprised me most was how similar our ideas are, although I suppose it is a logical progression for a steampunk Sisyphus to build his own machine to help move the rock. I like the idea because it brings something new to the myth and gives it a different spin, rather than just retelling the events. I think my focus is a bit different though - I want to portray what effect the machine would have on Sisyphus (borrowing from Camus). I would love to animate it too, making it into an endless animation loop of Sisyphus going round and round to give the viewer a taste of Sisyphus's frustration :)

I haven't decided yet which idea I will go with. I think the 4 horsemen would make a more dramatic still image, and the last challenge I entered I already did an old man going insane :)

Cool idea. Have you consider of making it funny. For instance after going through great effort of making a machine that could push that huge boulder to the top of the hill, he realizes that he did not take into account a steam drop on the other side and so he plummets down along with the rock crushing his machine. He is back where he started.

This is a small composition of few sketches for Hades.
I have few issues with the design, Im still trying to figure some parts, such as leg and arm links that form tentacle kind of limbs,, and the parts that are going to be visible inside, machine, and the steam tank attached to the rear.
I have downloaded couple of steam locomotive images to study from.

Here is the model.
I want to put some decoration with Greek art patterns, engraving and stuff on his plates, especially his head and horns,
I also want to write this across his for head and his horns in Greek alphabet:
KNEEL AND TREMBLE, I AM HADES, LORD OF HELL.
SO if anyone can translate it and post or mail me this, I would truly appreciate.

Little bit more on the design.
Inspiration for Hades comes from WETA's Balrog. Im gonna try and make this machine that could pass as a crossover between Balrog and golden trooper from Hellboy 2 and maybe Bender from futurama.
I have this fierce image in my head, I hope that I will manage to translate it on the screen.

I made this sketch using couple of pics from human anatomy site, blended two figures into one, and played with liquify to get desired look.

I first started imagining Sis(gonna call him Sis for the rest of the challenge)
as this huge muscle guy pushing the stone.
But, as I started wondering, It became clear that skinny old guy would do better.
The viewer would be more symphatetic towards this old helpless character than it would be to some Hulk rolling some chunk of rock.
He is skinny and fragile , but, he has brains,(he cheated death twice) he was a king, he is wise and what not.
So, I came up with this image.

This is a model made in Zbrush.
Low poly was done in 3ds Max, then uvw aplied, and finally imported to zbrush for detailing and making him look believable.

I still have few details left to finish, and the whole texturing to do.

Hi Guys!

Im strugling with the story. Im going with Sisyphus, but I cant move one until I figure out the story behind the trailer, and I would like to give trailer certain weight and backbone with good story behind it.

Anyway, I think I abandoned early concept of Sis bulding his own machine.
I was thinking about it for some time, and it wouldn't be to realistic and believable that a barely dressed guy thrown to hell starts building complex machine out of practicaly nothing.

So, I dug deeper in the myth of Sisyphus and found out some interesting details.
Since there are numerous interpretations and believes around this myth, I picked parts I thought could be crucial for my entry and what would be most suitable for the steampunk theme.
Sisyphus was thrown to hell, Tartarus(has numerous interpretations) the deepest pit of the underworld to pay for his sins, and the fact that he tricked goads two times.
The punishment was to push the stone up the steep hill, and just before the top, it would roll down and he would have to repeat it to eternety.
Also, other thing I found out, is that Titans were dethroned in war with goads and inprisoned in Tartarus so they cannot escape.
So this gave me the ide what to do next.

This would be the plot in rough of what I want to do:

SISYPHUS THROWN TO TARTARUS BY THE HADES HIMSELF

BEING EXPLAINED WHAT IS THE PUNISHMENT, AND WHAT HAPPENS IF HE DOESNT DO IT, AND WHAT IF HE SUCCEED IN IT.

HE TRIES TO ROLL BIG CHUNK OF ROCK, BUT IT IS POINTLESS, THE STONE IS TO HEAVY AND WONT NUDGE

DEPRESSED, KNOWING HIS FAITH HE STARTS WALKING UP THE HILL TO THROW HIMSELF DOWN THE SHARP ROCKS TO END HIS MISERY(NOT GONNA HAPPEN IN HELL)

ON THE WAY UP THE HILL, HE FINDS A CRACK IN THE STONE

HE ENTERS THE CRACK, ONLY TO FIND HUGE AND HIGH HALLWAY TUNNEL WITH PILLARS AND TWELVE BIG GALLERYS IN THE WALLS, SIX ON EACH SIDE

IN EACH OF THE TWELVE GALLERYS RESTED ONE TITAN

HE MANAGES TO AWAKE ONE OF THEESE GIANTS, WHO IN RETURN IS IN HIS DEBT FOR AS LONG AS HE IS LIVE.

AND THE REST IS GOING UNDER THE TITLE, SISYPHUS GREAT ESCAPE.
HOW HE ESCAPED FROM HELL, FOUGHT HADES, AND ALL OTHER BAD THINGS IN TARTARUS, TO HIS LIFE, FOR THE THIRD TIME.

Now, I have to find a way how to bring this story into a 30 seconds trailer and to keep it clean and understandable. I think that would be most challenging thing for me to do.

Hi Damir

This sounds like a lot of work - several different environments and characters and a lot to tell.

Anyway, I think I abandoned early concept of Sis bulding his own machine.
I was thinking about it for some time, and it wouldn't be to realistic and believable that a barely dressed guy thrown to hell starts building complex machine out of practicaly nothing.

I thought about this too when considering the same idea but I don't think it is unrealistic. Sisyphus is most well known for tricking the Gods, so I don't think he had to find and manufacture the material and tools in Tartarus from nothing - he tricked the Gods to bring them to him.

I hope you can figure your story out soon. Your Sisyphus is looking great.

This is a wip matte,
Heavy photoshop duddle, crossed with some camera maping for the final shot could result with some decent shot.

The idea about Tartarus is that we have several chambers, talking about colossal
caves, that are laying on stacked on top of each other.
Every chamber has a big hole in the middle of it, and the hole leads to the chamber under, and so on, until the final deepest chamber.

Hades is going to resemble big spidery thing robot, with horned head, when moving.
First phase is his torn like appearance.
He is falling from the upper chambers to the deepest one, carrying Sisyphus inside of his belly.

Anyway, This is God of Hell, Hades, after falling from above, he is stuck in the ground, thus, spreading his spidery legs to pull himself from the rocks.
The purple dot flying thingies are particles that later on will hopefully be nicely rendered steamy smokey stuff.
And the bluish smash looking stuff under Hades'es legs are actually procedural 3ds max objects, famous teapots, I have reaproched that part later on, and made it with particles again, and some instanced geometry.

This is the roughly composed trailer, it ticks just above 32 sec.
Dunno if I'l make it with the sound, it would be grat though.

It would be great if the dedline date was pushed until friday or something.

Hey mate,

Very nicely done storyboards! Sorry you weren't able to render everything out on time, but with regards to your trailer...I love the giant robot at the end. You did a great job conveying its massive scale...I especially love the part where his hand breaks the ledge on his chair.

Damir, that trailer was amazing. Your skills are amazing. It doesn't matter that it is not rendered. You have shown your skills. You are one-man-studio. Great concept, great designs. When you finish it just publish it somewhere and jobs will start coming from all over the world.

adib, thx, congrats to you mate.

ivanisavich, man, I remember Matroshka. I still wanna see the movie based on your trailer.
It's not any different here with steampunk. You are really capable dude, hats down!!

Zets, thx for being supportive mate! I hope to see you in the next challenge, cos you got some serious potential there.

I will post my final today or tommorow, If I gather strenght, it will take few days more, then I'l make it complete, more like in the storyboard.
The battle with time was great, have learned some new tricks, new organisational skills, I cant complain at all
Im gratefull to all other challengers here for their inspiring ideas and abilities and wish to congratulate them for their extraordinary projects being pulled here.
Looking forward for new challenges!

Congratulations man, excellent piece!!

I totally sympathise with the fact that time ran out on you - I had the same situation with my entry. I hope you manage to keep the momentum going and to get it finished because, as mentioned above, it will look fantastic on your reel

Best of luck

I just LOVE the storyboards you've created.
They are so beautyfull. Not so much the drawings themself, as they are pretty crude and simple, but the simplicity, your use of color and the framing just works perfectly together.

The are very inspirational, and if this was a small part of a bigger pipeline, I would love to be working off of those :)

Great job, and looking foreward to see the trailer once it gets done.
