I've decided to make a picture of Icarus preparing for takeoff and the final will be done in 3d. I noticed that I'm not the only one who picked Icarus for this challenge but still I'm going to do it. This is the first sketch of his pose and a design for the wing mechanics. I tested it on legos and it works :D
Wings will be attached to the backplate.

So far I've managed to miss this whole steampunk thing so I'd very much appreciate comments and tips to point me to the right direction.

I decided to start on the head. It turned out quite nice, I think. I Used mainly the line tool, surface modifier and meshSmooth.

I need to start sketching the background and rethink the pose a bit.

I got started on the body. Again mainly with the line tool and then surfacing the mesh. The wings will be attached to the backplate that is strapped on with leather straps. I'll do the buckles after finishing the body .

Good!...I would like to see more detail in the body.

Keep it up.

I got the bodyparts modeled. Still using Line tool and Surface modifier method which I like the best. Also applied a Meshsmooth.

The most annoying part is behind, which is ofcourse, setting uvw's.. I started on textures and bumps and some displacement is now done.
I was going to use mudbox for adding detail to the model but it didn't quite turnout the way I'd wantet it to. So, I decided to stick to bitmap bumps and displacement.

I got him textured, I didn't go to too much detail on the face because it propably won't be showing that well in the final picture, whatever that will turnout to be.

Here are the wings, bumpmapped and textured. There is a tiny steam engine behind those cogs in the middle. The engine gets its power from a small tank on the left side, some kind of chemical reaction I think... No need to feed coal.
The engine rotates one cog that makes the whole thing flap.

I have completely ran out of time and energy on this challenge.
I don't know what happened, I had a nice idea and everything was going fine until I just noticed that I haven't been working on this picture for ages. So, I'm dropping out of this challenge and hopefully I can do better next time.

Good luck to everyone in this challenge! :)
