View Full Version : XSI experience questions
gabe28 06-15-2003, 06:08 AM Hi,
I just downloaded and installed XSI experience. I've been using Lightwave 3D for about five years (click here to see a current example of my work (http://www.sad-world.com/germany/) )and want to expand my horizons a bit by learning some other apps (I tried the free version of Maya but the watermarks in the windows drove me away).
I have a few questions though -
1. what are the limitations of experience besides the noncommercial licence agreement? Watermarked images? Save limitiations? Render limits? Anything else?
2. The Lightwave community has very good things to say about XSI. Any thoughts from other Lightwavers who have moved to XSI or incorporated into their work?
3. What web sites, books and other resources could be useful to me as a new XSI user?
Thanks.

1) saves i propietary format, no export, good chunk of the SDK cut off scripting (to prevent exporting), watermark
2) I'm not LWing since ages, will leave this to someone else :)
3) www.xsibase.com www.edharriss.com www.xsifiles.com www.softimage.com www.aldis.co.uk
you won't need anything else since everything else is linked from Ed's site

Are you sure. I was told (I think by Bob Shafron at Soft) that you could read the scenes with XSI, which means its good for freelance work for a company that has a renderfarm. I wish my memory on the subject was more clear.

it can READ .scn scenes, but it saves in .exp and there's no way to exit from the app once you are in (else it could be usable in certain points of a production pipeline instead of commercial licenses).
obviously enough it's useless to work as a freelance for a company, it's supposed to be useless for anything commercial and it would be illegal to do so with the exp eula :)

oh well. Though without that EULA you would have more companies making rederfarms with it (buying liscenses) for a quickly growing crop of users.

loosing you here...
the rendering is watermarked, the "license" (or lack of thereof) is a workstation one (nodelocked), the resolution is limited (reasonably but it still is).
you sure you have in mind the same exp version we do ? :)

Thanks for the responces. As for not being able to export, that's just fine. I'm just trying to learn the program. If I need to do anything for a client I'll do it with Lightwave since I have a Lightwave licence.

What Im saying is that companies that already own liscenses can render your scene once you produce it for them on your exp version (unless the EULA says otherwise) and that if more companies saw that more people knew XSI, then they would be easier to sell seats to because they would believe they could fill them.More of Soft would be bought if more freelancers could learn and use the software to make scenes for companies with seats and renderfarms... its just an idea. I guess the EULA prohibts it as you say.
