It took me a long time to come up with a concept. I went through a gamut of themes including Joan of Arc, King Arthur and Lancelot, Lady of Shalott...before settling on Alice in Wonderland. For some reason, I looked at the video deadline, so I thought I had more time. Oops. I've never completed a challenge so far. So hopefully this time will be different.

I thought the size of Alice was too small, so I decided to try a fish eye lens to make her bigger. My husband didn't like the distortion. I was initially mad at him, but I decided that he was right.

This is my initial drawing. It is a tighter sketch than the first concept drawing. I made Alice a little bigger to draw more attention to her. After I scanned it in, I realize Alice is sliding off the mushroom. I figure I will fix it during the painting process.

I like the composition and lighting. Good job. However, Alice looks like she is floating in mid air. There is something about her pose that doesn't work.

I noticed that Alice wasn't sitting correctly on the mushroom. She does look like she's sliding off. I'll try to fix it during the painting process. Thanks for the comments!

I tried to incorporate the steam engine "look" to the caterpillar. This is going to take a long time!

Had to work the last 2 days during New Year's Eve and New Year's Day...Got some time in last night to work on the Steampunk artwork. I love the way every one else's work is progressing.

Hey,
Thanks for the nice comments...I still have a lot to learn. This Steampunk idea is inspiring and challenging. I love to see the process on how the other artists work. Otherwise, I'd be forever operating in a vacuum...

Your concept is developing nicely. Great character design, and I love the colors and lighting. The composition is also great. Keep up the good work!

Again, adding some more details. Even though I have steam engine reference, I realize I have no idea what these gears and mechanisms do, and am incorporating it in my piece.

I added more critters...some how my sheltie sneaks into all my artwork...I think she paints herself in when I'm sleeping.

Your Steampunk entry is one of my favorites (I think I mentioned it on your link already). I love your lighting and composition and the dread of doom! Makes me not want to continue...but I'm here really to meet people. Thanks for dropping by!

This is a fantastic image already. The composition look great, very clear S shape. The design is great. Alice could use more steampunk accessories, but otherwise its great.

Thanks for the nice compliments. Hm...steampunk accessories on Alice...I like that idea. I don't know if I can finish this for the competition (even though we got an extra week). I was just going to take my time and work on it on my own. I already have my favorite entries picked out, so I was going to bow out gracefully. I tip my hat to the more accomplished!

Beutiful work! I was very taken for all the colors and the details , I was a bit concerned for all the warm tones, although since the alice dress itīs so blue make a good cold contrast for all this hot spots! Congratulations for getting the work done and bringing such excellent work and myth! You are almost finish! :D
 Sorry for not replay to your thread earlier, work it dreadful for artistic free time!

Well that's it. What I've learned is to start early next time. I read the video deadline and I thought the 2D one was due at that time. I'm happy that I finished (this will be the first challenge I completed.) I must say I am very impressed by the other entries. They are super inspiring and I love to see the work process of other artists.

I'm happy you dropped by. Whew...now I'm finished. One thing great about the challenge is I would have never have painted this subject to begin with. It surely points out your weak points! But it was fun!

Your final image turned out really great. It still has a painterly feeling without sacrificing detail. The colors are nice and the machine centipede is very imaginative. Great job!

haha I know what you mean, on weak points, :arteest: The subjects in this events; they always ask the best to our imagination and technical skills, So Glad you broke those boundaries so well!
Excellent Ending! Each idea getīs solid in the whole concept, I missed some details at 1st look, but I love to keep watching it, and find more haha! :scream: CONGRATULATIONS! the work has finally ended ! And I wish to you the best reward! :lightbulb ;)

This looks as if it would be an illustration in an Alice in wonderland story book. It's trippy and i like your color palette. I must say though that scrolling back through your wip I like the fisheye perspective, makes me curious as to how you would have further developed it. As far as starting late goes I made the same mistake- man! it was crunch time towards the end. if it weren't for the deadline extenstion i wouldn't have made it. But it was fun! i look forward to the next one.
good luck!

I actually was leaning towards developing the fisheye comp, but my husband didn't like it. I wanted to emphasize Alice more. Oh well. Yes, next time, we have to start right when they announce the challenge. I think I spent too much time determining what subject to work on. You're definitely right, if they didn't extend the deadline, I wouldn't have bothered to finish the piece (it probably would have sat in my computer for 6 months.)
Thanks again, Axel! It feels good to finally finish a Challenge. Hopefully it will encourage me to enter some more.
