View Full Version : Shortcut list
kwshipman 06-15-2003, 05:45 AM hey all, I am new to maya and am learing on PLE while watching the VTM's from 3D Buzz. And was wondering if there is a list of the default shortcut keys and such? Like Alt+left click to rotate, etc. I understand that many of these can be customized but I want to stick with the default while I learn. So anything you got for me would be helpful! thanks

This is a PDF that compares Maya hotkeys to 3dsMAX, but it shows all the major maya commands so it should be helpful

It's quite exaustive... i wouldnt suggest editing or making yourown until your quite familiar with maya.

I think
you should take a print out of window>settings/preferences>hotkeys as suggested by doogie and pin it there before you and faithfully worship it everyday. However i guess you will finally end up using Ctrl + A and a few of your own shortcut keys most apart from the favorite hotbar [space]
My favorite default are
Ctrl+A and
G
Ctrl+z (most favorite :P )
p P
Ctrl + G
Ctrl+b
maybe few more i dont remember ahh F and A and all others are my own making.
Ofcourse space ;)

anakinskywalker: I read through your favs thinking... "what does that one do?" but I use those same ones everyday, I just never actually think of them as "ctrl - a opens attribute editor" I just picked them up one by one by watching other people work in lab. I love just to watch people work and watch their workflow.... and you can pick up quite a few by reading threads like these :D

Doogie .. I am also a trainer for 3dsmax .. so although i wont think about it while using it myself or in Maya (i am still learning it myself).. I have this odd annoying habit of speaking out the keys while demonstrating to a group of students. :p Sometimes irritates me. Sometimes I just spell out the whole process (especially in Photoshop) in shortcut keys to impress the newbies

once you know your workflow and what u need to do and can identify your favorite tools you can then create your hotkey driven marking menus and context sensitive hotkeys.
have ctrl+x extrude face/edge/ or vert depending on which component is selected.
i have alt+w for move component(poly)....and l for edgeloop...the 2 in combo is very nice
