Software: Photoshop
Please ignore hidious concept sketch on the right. Wow, its really bad.
This scene depicts the victory of Sundiata Keita, Lion of the Mandinka people if Mali, over his nemesis, the usurper Suomaoro, sorcerer king of the Sosso.
Sundiata, prophecied to become the greatest king of Mali was born a cripple so his older half-brother took the throne. Stung by insults to himself and his mother, the Buffalo Woman, Sundiata went to the blacksmith for help, who made him a brace that helped him walk following which Sundiata and his mother left to travel West Africa.
While among the Mema, Sundiata learned that Suomaoro had taken Mali and held Sundiata's half-sister and his bard. Returning at the head of an army, Sundiata discovered the secret of Suomaoro's great power and prepared a magic arrow that would drain it, successfully using it in their final battle and then slaying Suomaoro.
Here the blacksmith's brace that helped Sundiata to walk has been re-imagined as a clockwork mechanism, and Suomaoro's magic has been re-imagined as steam powered.
The Epic of Sundiata is the foundational epic of Mali, still told by the griots and djele of the region.
