Here is my idea: age of space exploration and age of steam and iron in one. Hard brass, power of fire and water on one side and lack of weight, lack of gravity and distant worlds on other side. Prepare for hard iron journey :)

Sketch is very rough, 3 minutes idea. More like doodle, but I hope it conveys the idea. Tiem for defining and detailing will come later.

Close encounters of the Steamy kind?

No, thats my idea. I dont trace anybody's else posts.

Edit: Sorry, i though you suggested a member Steamy already post something similar. However I cannot find any user Steamy and I realize my silly mistake.

Back to the concept. No encoutres of any kind. It more about starting the journey. Showing how long is going to be by load of stuff being load into the ship. Particulary showing power of engines, exagerated by perspective. I want to show power of steam and iron. Howe this power can counquer the space. Sort of redefining histry here ;-) I must thig about envirpment. Possibly will have some art deco skysrapers in background ect ect to buidld up some mood.

Materializing concept in sense of composition, form, lighting and general mood. Much more steam era detail coming. Any comments are welcome :)

I worked around the concept and I think I am happy with polished one. Now its time to push forward, not much time left.

Out of curiosity, what myth/legend are you working from? If the city had been tinted green, I would have thought Oz, but as it is I have no clue.

Valandar,

It is Oz, just 50 years later. I though having yellow road only would be not too literate :)

Some further work on detailing the vehicle.

My plan is to do mixed work, since there is not much time left and I have to be very efficient. The vehicle will be mostly 3d + some overpaiting. Landscaping will be both, half/half and background will be mostly 2d work. I guess whole image can be clasified in good part as matt painting.

I did a quick render from 3d and now started over painting process and composing some background.

As I live in OZ I decided to tell what happen to this land 100 years later after world wide known story happened. After farwell of Dorothy, Tin Man as the wisest from the bunch was choosen to rule Emerald City. In result 100 years later under his reigh the city and people changed totaly, refusing age of witches and embrasing era or steam and iron. And so the yellow road change as well, the place where all started...

To complete this image I used range of techniques including 3d modelling, texturing and lighting as well as 2d overpaiting and collage/matte painting.
