I like the global look of your robot so far :)

The steam iron-man is very nice ! Maybe this pic may help you too, just in case of :

And good luck !

samsanca: Thx for your comment :)

I thought that my robot might look a bit too much like The Iron Giant.

Nice concept, Im not sure if im gonna do that much details, because I'm not that much into modellering so many details :)

Okay, so the story Im doing is the legend of Pheidipides, With the Marathon run is named after. Copy/paste from wiki:

The name marathon comes from the legend of Pheidippides, a Greek messenger. The legend states that he was sent from the town of Marathon to Athens to announce that the Persians had been defeated in the Battle of Marathon.[2] It is said that he ran the entire distance without stopping and burst into the assembly, exclaiming "Νενικήκαμεν" (Nenikékamen, 'We have won.') before collapsing and dying.

I think this should be the final proportions of my character. I did som other sketches but the strokes was very bad when I scanned it in.

It looks cool. Are you gonna storyboard the story before you start production, or are you just gunna jump right into it?

Yea, I'm gonna do at storyboard soon :) when i got the time, just to get a idea of the hole thing.

So the first sequence of my short is finished. I just pulled of some quick zoomes and cuts.

We come to a galaxy, in a "castle" where we see the silout of a king. He calls he best soldier. But it turns out that he isnt that good, and a bit clumsy. So he almost breaks a statue. The king is impatient, and the soldier salutes resulting in him dropping the statue. The King gives the soldier the message.

I'm not sure about the clumsy part, what do you think? I might leave it out.

Hey Dennis.
It looks great so far!
Nice updates. I love the little spring under his foot, cool little detail.

Doerge
11-26-2008, 11:44 PM
I noticed the spring too and digs it! :)

Maybe you should Greek him up a bit though, so it's easier to see who he is? Like give him some kind of toga with greek patterns on the edges or a "skirt".. That's what I'm thinking about when someone talks about this legend. A greek guy in nothing but a skirt running, and running..

keep it up. Can't wait to see what you will do to him!

I been working a bit on it. I think it's becoming quit good.

Checklist (Todo):

- Details on hand, leg and feet.
- Bolts all over the robot.
- Smoke thingies

And then the model is done :D

I'm not quit sure, if i should unwrap him, it would take ages, but then again, whould the result be cool just with shaders? I not totally sure, any thoughts?

doffer
11-30-2008, 11:49 AM
Hey Dennis.
Love the model. It has a lot of great details.
I hope you find some automatic way of rotating the gears, as I think it'll look a bit wierd if they stay still, while he moves, but it'll also be a very job to animate them manually.
Perhaps MAXscript/MEL can do it for you.
Let me know if you need a bit of help in that direction.

But great work on the model, so far :)

Great model for a short film project.
I think it's a shame you don't unwrap it, though. It would add a nice dimension, if you drew some nice textures for it.

Phil is looking really great, but I have some crit. Those gears that you added here in there are looking cool, but I cant see what function do they bring in the whole mechanism, especially those on his back.

Deje3D
12-11-2008, 02:18 PM
ValenUA: Thx. What gears are you talking about?

The gears on the arms, is "controling" the arms.
Same goes for leg and hand.

On the back, it's meant to be the engine, of the whole robot. So the water is heatet by the fire indside the robot, and the steam is powering the gears. Witch is giving energy to the robot :)

Staszek: Thx a lot :)

doffer: Thx. Hmm, I will se if i got time for it. Right now i feel that there is more important things to focus on.

For the test, you should try a more comprehensive animation test. Do every angle possible and so on. Do something like a exaggerated walk cycle.

Very curious to see the whole rigged character

This is a bit wierd update :)

- I made the face rig
- I made some particles.
- I made the last texture/shading
- I fixed the hands.

I'm allmost finish. The only thing left is to make a slider for my gears on the back, so i they will loop the animation, and i can make them go faster.

I got no idea how to do that :) I guess I'm just gonna try.

Hej Dennis.

I really like the above render, the shading looks great and cool smoke!

The storyboard looks pretty clear as well.
Have you any estimate on the length og the film?
It looks rather long.

Looking very much foreward to see some motion.

Great work so far.

Hello Christoffer.

Thx for your comment.

Well I don't quit have a estimate of the lenght. Because I can't make a animatic at the moment. I thinks it's gonna be between 1,30 min to 2 min.

I have began animations, It's nice because i can practice my animations skill, which is equel to zero :D I don't got anything to show right now. I think my focus will be finishing the movie, and not be too long animating and stuck with the same shot.

doffer
12-31-2008, 01:27 PM
Hey Dennis.
Nice to see the scenes starts to develope. I can't wait to see the outcome.

A couple of notes on the space shot though:

The light should be a bit stronger, hitting the three planets. It seems a bit too weak at the moment.

The glow of the earth works okay, but it illuminates the backside of the sphere (or maybe you've done it by yourself?). No matter what, it doesn't looks right, as the light won't bounce around in space, and considering the black backs of the other planet, I think you should fix this (or at least be aware of it).

Last I think there are way too many stars on the background image. It seems a bit too crowded.

That's it. At least take it into consideration, and you can always deside for yourself, if you are going to change it or not :)

The last image looks fine, and still a bit too early to tell :)

Great work so far! :D

Hey Dennis :)
Yeah, the animation could use some more work. In general, keep concepts as anticipation, followthrough and weightshifting in mind when posing.

Great work on the animation. I wish i was this far, but i'm not. I'm far from it.

About the earth - and i tried to post this some time ago but couldn't get my post posted - is that you should get rid of the highlight on the planets. Planets don't really have highlights if you take a look at pictures.

And don't know how long you intend to go, but i guess the minimum will be 30 sec. So you don't have to go longer. And in the beginning i think some subtle changes in camera positions could work well. Just to avoid too long 1-camera-angle shots.
Same for the run cycle. Not sure in what environment you will place it, but you don't have to move the camera the same path as the character. Do a steady cam where the dude runs past. Think of every shot as a photograph to get the best composition.

And for the hands when running, maybe you should try little variation in the rotation of the wrist when he swings his arm back and forth. I think it stays the same too much and it notices.

Good luck on the rest.

cheers

Yea i know, I really want to make the hole story complete, right now i fell like is dosnt really tell a story. There is still some shots i would like to do, to get the story in. I still hope to make all the short, and lack a bit with the quality of the animation :)

Great idea, I will consider that.

And for the hands when running, maybe you should try little variation in the rotation of the wrist when he swings his arm back and forth. I think it stays the same too much and it notices.

If i got the time, i will try to change it.

Good luck on the rest.

cheers

Thx, u 2 :)

i think it would do the "action" some good if you tilted him a bit more forward when he runs. Right now his upper body is kindof centered above his legs, which is not the case when running.

when he jumps i think the cam shake is a bit too 90'ies gaming looking. a more subtle shake would make it look alot more intense and classy.

Today I have been working on the enviroment.

I changed the grass on the second image. Still I'm not quit happy with the ligthing and the grass. I'm not sure of im gonna change it that much.

I like ligthning on the third image. I was trying to create a good mood, and a comfy place, where u wanna go. This is the distination for my robot.

Thx for the feedback. Its very nice, with some feedback.

I was thinking, as he gets closer to his destination he would be leaning more forward in his run. I see your point though. Im gonna try move him a bit more forward in the start of the run also :)

Yea you are right about the camera shake :) I will change that.

Hey Guys !

I got a problem. I hope someone can help me.

My grass is currently a big pain for me. And my patince is really getting testet.

The problem is, that when i use scanline my scene ****es up when i make a render closer to my character. That is no good.

So i changed to MR, but then the grass is getting pretty light. And i can't control it. Some help would be good.

I have made it as a MR shader!

i'm not a 3d max user, but check the ambient color and the incandescence color on the material for the color. Big chance this is set to something. In a way it's best to turn it off.

and about the camera shake: if you are gonna use a compositing software, look at it if this has a shake node or feature. This could be much easyer and you don't need to apply it to the camera. Check it out.

cheers

Hmm, i tried to turn down every adjusteble thing. still the wierd locking grass :) And also to give it a neutral standard material. Still nothing.

When i use scanline the normal render, the grass lookes normal as the render above. So i think its MR there is doing something, and i dont like it :)

Bad news:
I rendered with my computer today, when i was in school. And it seems that it crashed doing frame 50 ! I'm getting pretty tired of this. So I'm gonna test every 50 frame and see if my computer can handle it.

God news:
The render looked awesome ;)

Hey mate,

I'm using hair & fur for my character's hair, and I'm using the MR primitive shader and the MR renderer. The renders are pretty slow though....and I'm just making a head of hair! You've got a whole field...I can't imagine how long that's taking.

Might I suggest making a series of cards with a grass texture on them, and then scattering them with pflow? Would render much faster :D

Thx for the input.

I made some planes, with opacity on them, which work ok. I used today to rework the lighting, and work on the grass. I'm gonna use planes with opacity on them for the scenes where we are close at the house, and hair with the establishing shot. If my computer can take it :)

So I'm ready to render seq2. I hope it will go without to mange challenges.

you could use muhair shader for the hair and fur :

i dicorverd it last night. very fast and no flickering ;)

Cool !

It awesome that so many people are willing to help :)

I got tired of fighting with the hair, so I only use it i some scenes, and cheat in others :D With planes. I don't think im gonna use muhair shader, simple because I'm done fighting with hair, No more :)

So i fixed some animation, still there could be done a lot of other things with it.

My good freind Andreas made the voice over, I thinks its awesome.

Still i need about 3 shots. But it looks like I'm gonna make it.

Let me know if something isnt making seens. Something didnt turn out like i wanted to, but on the other hand, some other shots became much better than i expectet.

Feedback is welcome, I'm not gonna change that much though, because I spend the last 2 weekends on it, and a lot of my spare time. Translatet im a bit sick of it :)

My Pov shot is gonna be changed, so its more realistic, it is on my todo list.

My Entry is based on the Myth about Pheidippides, how was a greak soilder. The legend states that he was sent from the town of Marathon to Athens to announce that the Persians had been defeated in the Battle of Marathon.

My story is about a Robot, how gets a mission, to deliver a message. But he pushes him self to hard.

I been working on this for 3 months, and it has been with ups and downs. Especialy the grass in my film troubled me a lot. And i ended ud with a film almost with out it. Lessen learned. I Learned a lot, and that is great, so i was quit happy to be a part of this.

Now I'm gonna get some sleep. It's 4 Am here in Denmark.

Thx for the comments!

There is a lot of things i would like to change, but duo the deadline I simply hadnt the time. And I lost my motivation by the end. So the final weekend was spent on other things, because the two weekends before i was locked in my arpartment working on this stuff :)

because the two weekends before i was locked in my arpartment working on this stuff The last two MONTH I was locked in my apartment ;)

I think it looks good though.
It seems a bit strange in some scenes, especially when he hands over the document.
The beginning works fairly well with stills though, considering you probably wanted animation in the first place.

I know you worked hard, especielly the last hours before deadline, but also since the beginning of the challenge.

Congrats on finishing :)

Thx man ! Yea, the scene where he hans the document over, got pretty ****ed, i animeted it, and liked it, then i wanted it to be longer, sĺ i scalede the keys, only some keys didnt get scaled, and i found out after i rendered, and due the deadline i didnt have anymore time.

It feels great to be done !!! I love it !!! And i learned a lot, which can be helpfull in next challenge ;)

It's good that you finished it. Very nice indeed. I hope you learned a lot while doing this one.
So now you'll know a little more about all the skills you used and what to improve :p
Animation isn't my strongest thing, but if you want to learn a little more about the technical side of the animation, maybe you could read this one: http://www.animationmentor.com/tipsandtricks/
I haven't ready it myself still, but sure would want to. Always nice te get it in your mind.

Cheers and great job! It's a hard thing to do for 1 person.

I don't think I'm gonna focus an animation jet, maybe later. But for now its more all the technical stuff.
