Cnine 11-13-2008, 07:00 PM ok So try this... get a white environment - a white plane (with an object on it ) and a white skylight with default settings and you get something like my drum image (see portfolio) - I did this using a LightTracer... How do i get this quick effect with maya - if there is a way? Im very new to Maya so im sorry if its a noob question
Cheers :)

this is a little too complicated for me... Is there not some other things I should know first or something? I dont know...
Im max, all you need is a skylight and light tracer... why is maya so bloody complicated??? cant I just put in an area light that automatically uses occlusion automatically like MAX's skylight?

Actually There's some parts in this that I dont quite get but here's what ive done so far...
Ive got a white plane and some objects on it with basic lamberts assigned, a Plain White environment backdrop and a single (settings untouched) area light. Im rendering with Mental Ray with Final Gathering on and it's accuracy setting on 500. This is the result im getting...

Notice the shadows...
Now take this image, for example...

This was done with a single skylight in max... see how simple? How do i get this effect in Maya? Im really struggling with this one where everyone else seems to just get this effect so easily.

Hi Cnine.
It is not so difficult to achive this in Maya.
First of all you do not need any light.
All you need to do is:
a) create an IBL node, or go to render settings and have one automatically done for you. (Environment - Image Based Lighting) and Set type to Texture, and its colour to White.
b) Remember to uncheck the Enable Default Light from Render settings->Common->Render Options.
And enable Final Gathering.
Now all the lighting will come from the white sphere around the scene, and should produce the similar effect you want.
Now remember it might look quite dull and not so bright or white as you want. If thats the case then go to the IBLs Attributes, click on Color gain (the white colour) and increase the V value to more than 1. The more you increase the more white illumination you will get.
Now, there are so many more ways to get the effect you want, so the one I describe above is just one of them...
If you stuck anywhere let me know.
Hope this helps.
Leo.

Open the attribute editor for the camera you're going to render from.
Go to the environment tab... change the color to white.
Create a large plane, assign a useBackground shader. Enable Final Gather, render.
