Hi there
I just receantly rendered this picture to test HDRI as im new to it. I found out that my teapots doesnt have the shadows that the tutorial spheres do.

here is the tutorial spheres-> http://www.3dtotal.com/team/Tutorials/stephen_reb_hdri2/render-b.jpg

my teapots -> http://hem.bredband.net/enzodiac/hdritest.jpg

I have followed that one plenty of times and it should work !

Plz tell me what's wrong !

I'm not sure but it seems that you are not using the same hdri map (see the reflection).
Or maybe it is your camera angle.

hmm it might be that but i have tried out different hdri maps and my objects just doesnt get darker below them. I dont understand why it has to be so hard to set up the GI and things in different renderers then the inbuilt light tracer coming along with max5

i guess the hdri maps were the problem !
i have one more thing then... How do i render out things with HDRI without having to see the hdri map as the backgrund while rendering ?

I just want a plain white background but you should be able to see the hdri reflections in a object in the scene...

First:
I have found the tutorial and made it. It seems that you've done something wrong. Here is my pic and as you see, there are shadows.

Second:
In the advanced options of fR's "Global-Illumination Parameters" you should copy and paste the hdr-map in the "Sky Light" map slot. Now disable the hdr-map in your environment slot. This should work.

Good luck :)

And this is what i got with the HDRI map used in the tutorial

go to rendering ..enviroment.. and that un check the top right thing.. enviroment bitmap or something.. and tada your hdri is no longer a background.

i am new to hdri to.

but you just have to put it in the slot you want it and it lights your scene.. its one of the easyest ways to get natural lighting i gues..

now another question.. caus i dont want to start a new topic.

if i take a sky..and make it to hdri .. could i use it as mapping for lighting a room for instance..so that the light comes from the outside into my room ?
