Hi .

Im working on a cartoon style charecter ,and Im in the rigging/skinning stage .
Now every time I get to the soulder Im going crazy trying to make it look decent .
After failing to do so I realy realy need your help .
I attached an image of with a quick sketch showing what im aiming and a wire of the mesh.
whats importent to me is to get that pointy shoulder when the arms are low .
I realy dont know what my problem is I tried playing with the weights and the bone placement but noting worked .

Hi,

Yes the shoulder setup is one of the difficult element of character setup process. To get a descent deformation on the shoulder there a a no. of ways to rig it. One of my favorite ( which works for me) is creating a joint/bone chain from lower neck to the elbow of about 8 segments. Create a spline ik and skin the spline curve to your shoulder, arm joints. This way you can skin the shoulder joint segments to the geometry and paint skin weights to get a descent deformation. Also, you get the twisting action for free by using spine ik twist (advance twist).
If the deformation still doesn't matches then you can always create blendShapes/morph target which can be triggered during the deformation stage...

after trials and errors i ended up by switching of shoulder twist bone set up and only count on the skin morph modfier and the help of autoclavicle set up this is what i came up with

i used paul neale method for setting up twisty bones however in extreme poses like when the arms come in infront of character when it passes 180 degrees it flips so i turned off this twisty for sake of deformations this setup is awesome and is neat on bones but i had to sacrifice it am i mistaken ?
