Hello everyone. I haven't had much time to get going, but here is a little something to start this thread. This is the beginning of a design for a character in my challenge piece. So far, I have only had time to get to work on the head and torso.

Thanks for comments and encouragement everyone. I'm sure I will need it before the end of this challenge.

The myth I picked for my challenge is Atlas. How this character fits in will be clear once I get a chance to finish the initial storyboards.

This won't answer all of the question about my story, but this is the beginning of it. Hopefully, I will get the rest of it done in the next day or two.

Thanks for the positive comments, Daniel, Joel, and Alexandra. I hope to finish answering your questions about the story with my first round of storyboards. So far I have only completed the first page, but the others should follow soon.

I wanted the boards to be clear, but I probably went too far on them. Please try not to judge the design of anything besides the shots. Most of the stuff in the scenes hasn't really been designed, and I'll be working to take the design much further in the steampunk direction, when I do.

Nico, thanks to you also. In answer to your question, I'm using Modo 302, which is by far my favorite modeling application.

I like the way you are working. So solid approach to the matter!
Good luck!

Nothing beats Modo for modeling imho! Unfortunately, it isn't a 3d solution. At first I was happy when they introduced animation, now not so much anymore. Most packages out there like Maya and Max etc. are basically a series of plugins bundled and tied together. Personally I'd rather if Modo just stuck to what they're good at. I fear that if they try to compete against the other software they will end up losing the power of their Modeling tools. I love the way they designed it (such as action centers and falloffs and what not), however it is not very condusive to complex animation.

Joel,

I agree with you about the current state of Modo, although it is a shame it is not that useful for animation, because I love the rendering engine in Modo. I did stubbornly do an entire project in it earlier this year animating in another app and exporting mdd data into Modo. It worked pretty well, but it was a pain not being able to get whole scene data back and forth between the apps. FBX format should supply this ability, but for whatever reason doesn't at this point.

I think that Luxology has been doing a good job of development up to this point and so far they have only made Modo stronger with each release. I could see it being a full-fledged animation system one day, if they keep going as they have been and keep the core of the application strong.

Very nice storyboard and work.

Its a bit confusing that the lamp and the chest of the robot looks so similar.

Thanks Alexander and Dennis.

Its a bit confusing that the lamp and the chest of the robot looks so similar.

This was an intentional choice to show that the robot and the warning system are part of an integrated system. If it proves to be confusing though, I can change it.

Page 2 of the storyboards. How this all relates to Atlas is coming, I promise.
