This is a great challenge from CGTalk. I'm using Nezha, a deity in Chinese mythology. Transforming an eastern mythology into a steampunk stylized character could be fun and interesting:) Cheers!!

What legend/Myth is this from? (Forgive me if I am a complete idiot for not knowing.)
Hi silenceimpaired:)
Nezha is often depicted flying in the sky with a wheel of fire under each foot, a golden hoop, the "cosmic ring", around his shoulder and a spear in his hands. Sometimes he is given multiple arms. Nezha is usually depicted as a youth and rarely as an adult.
As the third son of a military commander called Li Jing, a military leader in Chentangguan Fortress, his birth was peculiar. When his mother Lady Yin got pregnant, she waited for three years and six months to deliver the boy, but unfortunately a ball of flesh was born. His father got so angry that he split it with a sword, which caused Nezha to jump out and grow fully, even though his mind and temperament were that of a child.
After he killed Li Gen, a yaksha, and Ao Bing, the third son of East Sea Dragon King Ao Guang, Nezha flayed and disemboweled himself in order to save his parents that were taken hostage by Ao Guang, but was brought back to life by his master, Taiyi Zhenren, a Taoist immortal sage who used lotus blossoms to reconstruct a body for his soul to inhabit.[1]
Nezha's two elder brothers are also powerful warriors. The eldest is Jinzha (金吒), who is a disciple of Manjusri Bodhisattva, and the second eldest is Muzha (木吒), a disciple of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva.
Some traced his origins to the Vedic god Nalakuvara, and legend goes that he was born in the Shang dynasty.

In your concepts, the wheels where smaller than in the 3D view. In my opinion they looks better smaller.

hangkwong, Airflow, sunny Thanks for the comments:)
Ataulfo Actually i wanted to have it bigger :p So the emphasis is in the her legs. But it may change if the overall looks better with smaller wheels :) Thanks for the comment dude.
blakeo Still trying to composite a dynamic pose for her. Initially wanted to have her fighting with a Dragon Prince(according to her story). But i guess i won't have enough time to finish. So probably will have her in a fighting pose. I did some sketches on it but nothing is concrete yet:p Hopefully will have the composite soon:) Cheers!!

I did a simple rig and trying out poses for a dynamic action. Finally i came out with this and did a paint over scene. Its the final battle between Nezha and the Dragon King. Hope you guys like it:)

Hi Vincent,
I think you nail the composition of the picture nicely, nice mood and silhoutte. I had a few opinion though, Nezha pose seems to be suggesting lack of determination on fighting the enemy. I feel she should extreme her pose further to show that this is a DOA situation, not as she can win the match easily. This is just an opinion, overall is a classy stuff:bowdown:
Gambate!

Hi, i like the composition pose and color, little suggestion ofcause i know this is just only your
concept, having some gold color pattern and red cloth on the spear will be nicer.
for the pose of handling spear right, the way this character holding it is abit weird, looks like she going to throw the spear. i have search for a reference for you, maybe you can consider about it.

U have enhance the pose of Nezha and its look more nicer than the previous one.
I notice a few things, maybe some little suggestions. I noticed the eye of the dragon is too close to the edge of composition, resulting a bit tangent uncomfortability so move him into the left a bit might helps. The middle part of the Dragon tail seems to be in an uncomfortable composition with Nezha and as well the upper right of the screen, is becoming a bit heavy on lower left and empty on upper right, maybe can try to have lesser visual on the screen for the middle tail part. I am just trying to help out with the composition, hopefully u can achieve perfect for a great piece of artwork.
Well deserved praise on your effort and challenges, Gambate:buttrock:

Hey bro,
I love the idea and design of Nezha! Just some comments on the composition, with regards to the dragon in particular, which I hope you will find it helpful:
1. I agree with hangkwong about needing more "curves" in the composition. You can do that by making use of the dragon's body. In fact if you have not finalised the concept for the dragon, I'd suggest you can use elements from the chinese mythological dragon. They have long and slender body that swirls around. Make his body swirls round nezha more, such that the whole situation will look more intense and more "life threatening" to Nezha. At the moment, it gives me the impression that this dragon is not fierce enough, and so there's a lack of tension in the situation. You can also fill up more of the empty spaces by making the dragon swirls a few more rounds, around Nezha.
2. I suggest you show the claws of the dragon. Not only will that give you more elements to play with for the composition, it will also make it more threatening to Nezha and create more tension. Also open his mouth wider, the idea is to make him look more fierce and more offensive.
3. At the moment, Nezha has a very distinctive oriental style but not so for the dragon. So I think using a chinese mythological dragon will also help to enhance its look and feel. It will make the whole theme looks tighter.
Hope the suggestion help!

kenTHEman Hi there! It has been quite some times since i see you:) Thanks for the comments. I agree with point number 2 having the scene more life threatening. Actually I use the dragon as a placeholder. I will turn that dragon to a more steampunk junk look rather than a fleshy chinese dragon:p About having more swirls.. hmm.. i don't know about that becos it may look kinda messy in the scene? haha i will put in down on paper to test it out:)
paratrooper Thanks for dropping and giving me some comments:) I don't understand which middle you are refering to:P Can you please elaborate:P Anyway your entry look really cool!!

Nice work so far Vincent. I like the scenes with the dragon, that will turn out great :) As for the costumes, I also like the third one. Whenever I think of Nezha, I always picture the 2 golden hoops and the lotus petals on the costume. The third costume option you have is the only one that features those 2 iconic symbols. It's the most feminine (though Nezha is a boy originally right?) and intricate as well. Keep up the good work!
