View Full Version : 3ds max add selection question
rv-el 06-14-2003, 08:47 PM Hi, i was wondering if anybody knows how to add to a selection in max that WILL NOT deselect. right not CTRL plus selecting will add to a selection yet it will also deselect a currently selected object (very unaesthetic, i mean you HAVE alt to deselect if need be) especially like if you modeled a tall cup, and then in that cup was a very small flat object flush to the bottom of the cup, and it was pertinent to select each object in order for exporting to an engine. so basically if anybody knows a way to get this done it would really help.
thank you

You should just be able to hold CTRL and click, it shouldn't deselect any other objects. However there is something else you can do. Depending on your keyboard shortcuts you can hit H to bring up the selection floater and then you can click and drag or CTRL click to make your selections. If H doesn't work go to Tools/Selection Floater...
Hope this works for you.

it is not so much the end result but the process. Select... Select... Export. it turns out this doesn't matter for our shit now. it mattered for maya so i thought i would try on max. in maya you hold ctrl and shift and you can select with out any possibility of deselecting. If you actually know max and model exactly what i set as an example in the first post you will see exactly what i'm talking about.. it loves to deselect whats already selected even if the thing piece is just on top of it.
Ingredients for frustration
make and object in max... deselect it. now move your cursor over it and hit ctrl select. it selects it
now still holding ctrl hit the object again... it will DESLECT. now, go into subobject poly. hold shift and move a face just slightly in the direction of its normal. make sure its a separate object. now. face directly at that poly and select the first object, then try to ctrl select the second object. you have to get at an angle (even with the no selecting backface thing checked) such that theres nothing behind the second object your trying to select which with a CUP like object is very IMPOSSIBLE.. with a flat plan in the middle of it.
now. Select an object (one or both i dont care) then hold ALT and click on one of the selected objects.. it will Deselect. at this point being that alt and control are so nicely close to each other you have to wonder why the hell ctrl has to deselect EVER, or why there isn't an overide for it like maya has (ctrl +shift).
i dont really need to know how now. but it would still be nice as if i could turn it off, i would and make my life so much easier for select certain and many objects cluttered within many other objects from the viewport with and even in an order rather than from the list thing.

Agreed, Maya is so much nicer in terms of selecting stuff. It's one of those slight-frustration points with MAX you don't ever realise unless you've spent time with Maya for a while and then go back to MAX.
You can do things to help yourself though, no need for intense frustration, even with MAX. I suggest scriptspot.com, search for theOnion, a layer-manager program that offers functionality much like Maya's layers. Seperate the tricky-to-select objects into seperate layers, and hide the appropriate objects when you they start interfering with the selecting. If you're doing subobject-selections then you can Detach into seperate objects to get going. It's not a cure for the annoying selection-stuff, but hey, it beats clicking tens of times to reach one goddamn object.
