ok...this is my first try at a CGChallenge...i hope, that i can cope with the level here :)

I took 2 days of surfing trough references, myths, movies...everything to get a steampunk-feeling...and even more important - an idea!

And finally...yesterday in the evening my mind send me something.

Iīm going for Methusalem in a Steampunk-Version:

The old Prof. Methusalem is sitting in his favourite room of his manor. His old and sad eyes are looking on a picture.
He likes to sit next to a window at his favorite spot to look to the city.
Many things have changed compared to the time, when he was young.

The invention of steampower and all the progress, that came with it...
He was part of all that...one of the most important scientists. He tried to make all the advantages of steampower usable for mankind.
But he ran more and more into isolation...in the end there was only he, his laboratory and his work...
His last great invention was supposed to change everything...it should bring immortality...

None of his colleagues believed in what he tried to achieve. Behind closed doors, they said, that the Professor finally lost his sanity...
But this couldnīt stop him...he continued working by himself...

Then he became ill...his age started to become more and more recognizable...his body got old and weak...
But he was making progress and didnīt wanted to stop now, so he made the decision to be his first test subject.
He replaced and supported the bodyparts, that stopped working as supposed with the machines, that he invented and built...

He became more and more a machine...
To cope with that all and to keep the ideas flowing, he looked for help in opium...as many people did in that stressful times...

On some evenings, he sat there...in his favorite room in his big manor....alone...
Staring at pictures from the past or just looking out of the window to the city...

"So much has changed..."
He was able to expand his life more and more...but to what price? The machines bound him to his house, as he had to make sure, that there were always enough ressources to keep them working...and they werenīt small enough to go outside with them...

Also he was asking himself, why he should go out there anyway? Everyone he knew was dead now...and everyone else was afraid of the man being half mechanic...
So he sat there by himself...

-----

Iīm going for the picture of him sitting there and staring at a picture from past times.
Next to him will be the steam-powered machines, that keep him alive. He is connected to them by wires and has parts of his body made of metal...with connection-points for the machine...

The look of the machine will be somehow inspired by bioshock and all the machines back in the time around 1900...with subtle highlights like lights, indicating the functions...tanks for liquids...fancy details ;)

All that will be inside a room of an old victorian manor...very noble and rich equiped, but also everything is a bit torn off, covered by an atmosphere, that shows, that the live has left this room quite some time ago...

I hope, that i can capture a sad but still mystic mood with lighting and perspective...

Iīm working mostly in XSI...I think about taking the model of him into ZBrush for detailing...
There will be much postwork, i think...for that i will use Photoshop...

Itīs going to be one of my first projects that big...i hope i can make it with my current skills...

Iīm now going for concepts...as my pure drawing skills arenīt that great, i think, that iīll go for rough 3D-Blocking....letīs see ;)

Hope you will like it ;)
...and that i can really make it like i got it in my mind...

Very raw concept...only placement and mood-studies...
Only slight indications of steampunk-elements...as they do not matter yet...
