at first, don't take a bump. it will not give you a good result for that kind of effect you want to create. a displacement is the better one to choose here (or maybe hardcoding into the nurbs)
but anyway. rotate your bump mape over the surface so that at the poles isn't any bump effect. an eays way ma be to put the bump first onto the color to see where the bump will take effect later. rotate your texture around so that no white color is ate the poles and then put the map back to the bump (or as i mentioned the displacement)

The problem with that is there are about 180 dimples on a golf ball, and there is no where on the ball where there are not any dimples. I believe it has to do with the UV parameterization of the shape. All the basic sphere shapes come to a point, I know in 3d Max there is what you call a geosphere that does not come to a point. Is there a way to make a geosphere in Maya. Are fix the wat it comes to a point.
well honestly i havent tried it .. so i don't know if this might work... but maybe u can try to make a spherical projection...
hope that works

you can easily create a geo sphere in maya (dont know max so well)..
create a nurbs box.
increase the subdivisions for the 6 patches.
assign a sculpt deformer to the box
scale the sculpt deformer up until it deforms the box.
now you have a perfect sphere that is done by 6 patches.
hope that helps for you
cheers

or here http://www.maxplugins.de/
not sure if its a script or a plug

Thank you all I got it looking pretty good, using the geoshere in Maya which made it easier to layout the UV. I need to put together a new web site so I can start posting up my work.
Again thanks
