Hey Neville,
you remember well, it's been a while since the EON challenge. So it's about time to have some fun again:arteest: . Good luck for you too!
Ah, Gunie, yep, I couldn't resist to join the team and we'll have some fun for sure:love:
The first thought that came to my mind seeing the topic (and also the second and third thought...) was to recreate a steampunK version of a german tale by the Brothers Grimm: "The Frog Prince" or Iron Henry.
Just playing around with the idea and see if I can sketch something this weekend...

Hi Steph, I'm really glad to see you here, now "the team" is complete again!
So, I took some time at the weekend to sketch a lot of steamy frogs for the frog-prince tale and decided that I'm not feeling so froggy at all...what I really like to try would be a kind of Atlantis motiv with heavy victorian influence for characters and environment. The only problem I see right now is the deadline, the way I imagine it is a lot of work and I can perhaps not finish in time...For the moment I have no other ideas with less work ...

rough sketch for an Atlantis theme, characters and environment will be in victorian style (steamy of course),
outside the hall should be some traffic of various floating boats, inside the hall is the supply machinery, vegetation and some interior stuff...

I'm agree with the deadline. 8 Weeks are not that much for finishing. Your current concept sketch gives you space for optimization when time is going too short.
Will you fill also foreground with details ? It's kinda empty now.

Hi Per, so you can't see a woman standing alone, eh? Don't worry, I imagine she's flirting with a nice argonaut right in front of the windows...
Hey Lolo, yeah, somehow I was not really passionated about frogs, but my imagination is going wild with this one. And of course I see the shadow of Flossy here...
Hey Roman, yes, the 8 weeks are really short and Christmas time is coming soon...of course there will be something in the foreground as described under the picture: some interior stuff, supply machines...
Thanks Laeticia!
Tony, ah, I needed this 'keep going'!
Steph, help, the parrots are following me in this thread! No parrots on shirts this time, but perhaps in a birdcage...

Update of the floating vehicles, it should be enough to get a feeling of the background - more details will perhaps come later, now I'm first going to construct the hall...
Hey Sabrina! Nice update.
Great looking style on these underwater ships. and great atmosphere with the light shining trough the surface like that.
Maybe the ships need some little flippers to steer with though.
And I cant help fantasizing about what is going on behind those steamed up windows. something kinky perhaps or am I getting my pressure up for nothing?
Ah... steam jokes there is no end to it.:)
Gunilla
11-21-2008, 01:46 PM
Ah! The lil' round ones are really cute! Nice update - and lovely work ond the background. Perhaps some DoF and murkiness later could bring it even more under water - are you using mental ray?

Heheh, I didn't realize this was an underwater scene, I guess I didn't read closely enough. Kool! Steam power underwater, that is an interesting and complex idea, I guess there will be a lot of bubbles? I love the subs, very funky.
Hey Sabrina,
Really great work, like a lot your concept and the subs vehicles, cool!! :D
Mybe a bit more blue light on the vehicles, and more darker blue to the deep part of the water, to gain a bit on perspective and image deep. Think you need to put some elements for a size reference ( for example a group of fishes or a whale... dont know :)) and perhaps a giant squid that threatens to submarines ( that is only a wish :D), only a comment. Again , really cool work and looking forward for more updates! :D

hey sabrina
sehr schöne sachen bis jetzt!
i really like the look of the longer submarine so far
the little ones look a little to round i think but as try said they could use little flippers to steer
that would make them look a lot nicer i think. or instead of adding flippers u could use tubes with propellers inside. i guess that works better than flippers in real life (leave them to flipper :p ) and they look a lot more steampunk ^^
looking forward to seeing this come together

Lovely stuff! You've already captured a look which, if I saw it on television, would make me want to sit down and watch the rest of the movie. It's not surprising that this thread is gathering so much interest and admiration - the only addition I could offer is that I like the suggestion posted by Per and also by Liam, which is that a flipper/rudder or two could add some interest and functionality to the vehicles
Great work, Sabrina

Good Morning Challengers!
Per, thanks, the boats have all little fins at the backside, but perhaps I should make it more obvious...and the one-way-windows are of course for a little more privacy, and to steam up your curiousity...
Gunie, you're right, all the fancy effects will come later - hopefully - atm it's all about testing materials, color and a general mood...I render mostly with vray or scanline, but for the character part I'll use mental ray, haven't found a way to make convincing skin elsewhere so far.
Lolo, no pressure but your wishlist:eek: , just as well intimidating...But I'm glad to have you here for some pushs!
Jim, ups, so sometimes a picture can say so much more than the text...especially if no one is reading it:D ...hope the scene will be clearer with the next updates!
Hi Fernando, thanks for all the good hints, and I really like the idea of a squid...
Hi Steph, wow , so much progress already you're kidding:blush: , but I'm happy to compete against you in snailing...but wait, you've made a great weekend update, so already some points for me!
Fotis, great to see you here and thanks for the nice comment!
Hallo Liam, the idea of tubes and propellers is great, it really depends how much will be visible of the boats and my time to add this details in the end - but I will keep this in mind, thanks!
Mark, my only excuse for the lack of working details is really that it was a test for the mood - and if this works for you I'm already happy!
Hi Remko, funny fishes, I've noted this on the wishlist:deal: ...Thanks for dropping by!
Thanks, Mathias and Tony, for the cheering!
Hi Rok, there's indeed some quick PS work in the background, I guess there will be even more in the final picture, so I'm always glad to get some useful hints - especially the ones you wouldn't think of in the first place, thanks!
Thanks Corrie and Aaron! (Also a short one:D )

Morning!
So, thebest is the first:D , thanks Tony for the regular "keep going" !
Morning Lolo! Yes , it's a little empty right now, things to criticize will come later...
Hi Matteo! Glad that you like the concept, thanks for dropping by.
Hey Corrie, yeah, I'm a snail these days - now I only hope that the concept works...Thanks!
Thanks Jim, main reason to add the pressure doors now, was to give a reference scale - and I really hope the other stuff I'm just modeling will add a little more steampunk and underwater mood...
Steph, ah, you're sweet, thanks to cheer me up. Good that you've mentioned the panoramic view...it's indeed my main concern atm to find a good framing for the scene, I'm still playing around, so all suggestions are more than welcome. The difficulty is, that I want to add characters in the foreground, I can show the idea with the next update...
Hi Fotis, you have a good point here, atm I just try to keep the lighting as diffuse as possible, but I already think about a good fake for caustics without making the scene too busy...
Christopher, thanks for the visit and the nice comment!:)
Morning Roshan, no, for the environment and interior I use vray or just scanline renderer. Glad that you like the scene so far, not so glad that it reminds you of something else...I'm not a gamer, so I've not stumbled upon "Rapture" - I've looked at some screenshots right now and yes, I see the point...The concept for the environment is not so far from my imagination. I still think that it is unavoidable to have some similarities in two retro-underwater scenes, but now I'm a little unhappy:banghead: . I thought I had a quite original concept.
What should I do now, I'm not really in the mood to make a total change of concept and I don't want to look closer in this game - than it would indeed affect me in some way.
Any ideas?

I came up with an original idea once... and that was that there was nothing new under the sun... then I discovered some guy by the name of Solomon, from far back when said that... so I have contented myself with not being original but seeking to perfect the ideas that grasp at my mind in a far better way than those who have come before me.
Don't change direction to drastically so you loose your love of the concept!
PS... if you get a chance, check out my struggles with perspective and composition and let me know if i'm actually succeeding at all. Thanks :)

I agree, it's unavoidable that whatever great idea we come up with, it will have been done to some degree in the past. I like Aaron's comment about trying to do it better than those who proceeded us. In this case, I don't think it's so much going to take a look at everything they did in Rapture, and trying hard to make yours different and better. I think you should just avoid looking at material from the game and just create what was in your head and your heart.
I have played the game myself, amazing game btw. But I think most people will agree, that your concept was different and interesting enough by itself to warrent more exploration.
I'm sure this is a hard decision for you. Let us know what you will do as we are eager to keep following your thread!
Best of luck!

Hey sabrina don't even think of changing your concept dear, your concept is excellent:).
I didn't mean to say that your concept is a copy of rapture, please don't take me wrong. Your concept just reminds me of rapture thats it. I agree with warpv just go with your concept and forget rapture. Bioshock is completely a different concept and yours is totally different.

What? I seem to have missed commenting on this last update - and to encourage you to keep moving in the direction your vision goes. It's a steampunk theme, there has to be similarities since this an existing style, so don't worry. Besides I'm sure your image comes up even better :)
I really like the latest update, now we feel a sense of scale and already feel the difference between outside in the water and inside the hallway. Very nice miss

11-25-2008, 05:35 PM
No matter what you do, there will always be something similar around. Dont change just because there is a game out with similar ideas.
Although rapture was made in the 1940s and not Victorian times, so it had a lot of art deco styling instead. Your wip looks great, those little submarines are very cool. Reminds me of 20,000 leagues under the sea, except less intimidating
mdavid
11-25-2008, 11:56 PM
I agree with the others, Sabrina. Your image is coming along beautifully, and the fact that a game exists out there that went along some similar directions is just coincidence, rather than anything to worry about. And as xtremepenguin pointed out, that was more art deco than steampunk anyway. I'd encourage you to not look at the Rapture screen grabs (like you said) to ensure it does not influence you too much (also, like you said) and just see how your image turns out.
Like the others said, it is almost impossible to come up with totally original ideas. I came up with my 'waterskiing duck' idea but doing that caused such an onset of problems and grief in my thread it almost made me lose interest in this challenge, and besides, I'd bet that even waterskiing ducks is not a totally original idea either. In fact, I once tried to invent a word to name some characters I'd designed, and to see if my invented words were original I ran them through Google. And every example I could 'invent' had already been done, except for words which were virtually impossible to pronounce.
The truth is, the steampunk genre is, itself, a much-used style of design and imagery. So every one of us who does this challenge properly is going to be producing a look similar to something which has already been created. There's a whole bunch of people here who love the progress you're making. So I'll join in the chorus to encourage you to keep having fun and keep going!

Hey Aaron, ah, thank you for the encouragement, really nice of you - I'll try to make the best of it!
Hello Gert:wavey: , long time not seen, great to have you here for support! I hope you're doing fine, is there a chance to see your entry in this challenge?
Hi Per, thanks and 'flippers for the ships', it's noted on the wishlist:deal: ...until Christmas I can hopefully add all these details.
Hey Christopher, thanks for your comment, you have some points here...it wouldn't make sense to look in the game at all, because I'm sure it would somehow effect me. But perhaps I should play it when the challenge is over, at least it seems to be a good one like I've heard not only from you:D ...
Roshan, don't worry:) , I totally understand what you wanted to say! I was just a little troubled yesterday when I looked at a screenshot and thought "oh no, really similar and this can be a problem". But I've asked some people to compare the concepts for me and was assured that they are just so far similar, as you can expect it for two retro-underwater scenes. It's a nightmare to proudly present a concept and run into copyright problems with it...But I see now that it is no problem at all and I'll continue just the way I've planned...
Hi Tony, of course, I keep going!
Morning Gunie, glad that you like the latest update...
Hi James, thanks for the visit and encouragement!
Hey Mark,
Like the others said, it is almost impossible to come up with totally original ideas. ha, funny to see that you wrote this, I'm quite sure that I've never heard about waterskiing ducks:D ...sadly enough I know the problems you've got with this original idea...
But of course I get the point, now that I'm sure that it will be no problem I' ll just happily continue my modeling.
Thank you all for the feedback! My concerns are obviously unnecessary and the next update is on the way...

Following Stephs hint to try a more panoramic view I've extended the hall and changed the camera angle. This way there's enough free space inside and outside to fill. I've made some quick polys as a stand-in for the foreground characters...hope this works!
A very good morning to you Sabrina.
This is looking good. I knew it, she needed a man.:)
I really like the whole consept with the wast open ocean outside the delicate Victorian greenhouse looking structures.
Though looking at you first sketch i kind of liked the layout you had there better. More of an open living room that you could furnish and do a lott more with the inside. This hallway can look a bit naked and empty. unless that is the plan. :)

Good morning Sabrina!
I'm really loving the latest progress image you posted! I think it will be very interesting to see how you develop the relationship between the girl in the glass and the man in the ocean. :) I like the fact that it's a side view of the characters, its seems to brings a greater more distance between the characters, physically and metaphorically.
I also agree with Laurent (btw your english if fine!) about adding a bit of perspective exageration.
I might have missed this in an earlier post, but what do you plan on filling the inside of the glass tube with?!
Anyway, it's coming along nicely, keep it up! :)

And now it's already much better waterfeeling, this is really coming on well. May I wish for some plants in the room? Like an underwater greenhouse.

I like this! A couple questions. I like the reflections on the right side wall-- but I am trying to place the circle in the reflection... Was the reflection added by the 3d or you? Is the circle from the ship on the left?
Also, I don't know if you did it intentionally :) but as I look at the image I keep thinking move closer... or why are they so distant from each other? Did he just show up and she is surprised and hasn't had time to respond? Is he holding her prisoner in this place and she doesn't much like him? Is he here to rescue her? My mind is running way too much.
Did I miss the story line? I gazed through the post... I think I'm too tired right now, I shouldn't stay up so late! lol Either way-- after all my rambling, I am really excited to see your end image!

great work ...just have little tiny notice (Not criticism )I Think That corridor Is Under The Water...Why Is Not More Blue...anyway...it is great view...and good choice (camera angle) At the moment the scene is not really textured and I've payed not much attention to a proper lighting, this will all come later...and then you should get the underwater feeling, and of course the colour should be more greenish-blue also in the hall...Thanks for your visit!:)

Ah, so nice to hear this, but that's a totally subjective feeling I share the other way round:scream: : for me it's more exiting to see your 2d/3d-mix coming together...
Hi Aaron, I've placed some lightsources along the hall and made them invisible - what you see are the physical correct reflections of these lights. Later I have to model some lamps and adjust the lighting, so that it will make more sense...The positions of the characters are mainly a result of composition thoughts, but of course they should also establish a "relationship" ...perhaps I make it more clearer when I refine the characters, but I guess it's a good thing to leave some things in a picture open for speculations...more interesting this way, don't you think!

Hey Sabrina, I meant to say earlier how much I liked the impression of looking up at the surface of the water and waves. That was very clever and the effect you managed to get was wonderful. It's great to see the diver taking form now too. Maybe a few big bolts and an old-fashioned switch/lever lock/unlock on the helmet will enhance his steampunkiness as you progress with him, and rather than a single air tube perhaps you could add an extra tube or two, to bring out the low-tech, slightly inefficient steampunk look. You could even put some slight gear-wheel cogs around his helmet seal (or maybe that would look like unnecessary decoration) These are just ideas for the metal bits of course - I have no doubt you'll do something really special. I really like your idea of having most of the suit made of a leathery cloth

Hello Sabrina.
This is looking real good I think. Maybe his head looks a bit large inn there but that may be a result of the glass maybe.
Personaly I think you could go for a bit more radical design on the helmet and make it larger. There was some cool diving suit designs in the "20.000 league under the sea" film I remember. cant find any photos of it on the web right now though.
Also if you want to go into more details on the suit. It used to be made of heavy duty cloth I think and the fabric gets squeezed to the body if you know what i mean.
but all over looking good so far girl.
PS.
Yes and when looking at hte face in the helmet.... Is it Laurent i see in there??

Cool! Another update from Sabrina. And it's another really good one. That modeling is superb. For steampunking it, well I suppose one idea would be to look for any place that could do with some good old-fashioned gears/cogs or levers and I'd be making them a bit oversized so they'd be noticed. For example those little wheels alongside the air tubes could be a bit bigger. And maybe some brass or copper metals since they seem to be so closely associated with the steampunk genre. But to be honest, what you've done already is looking really good

Like i said your concept is one of my favourites.
You can add a lot to the mood and volumetrics there.
The diver looks superb so far.I like the extra volume that shows he is in a suit and
I agree about some extra elements bolts etc that could be more steampunkish i think.
Thank u for your kind words. I havent used something special regarding zbrush

Hi Sabrina,
Yeah, the leather could offer some very nice texturing opportunities. Nice update on the diving suit! You said you were going to do some ZBrushing later, does that mean all this was done all in MAX?! :surprised I'd really love to see a wireframe!
I agree with the previous suggestions. What I would add is that the air tubes seem really...funny. From the front they look like Mickey Mouse ears! ;) Maybe try attaching them in other places. Or not attaching them symetrically.
Also, here are a few pictures I found, (you might already have found them but) I thought they might be of help!

Good Morning!
Lolo, ah, thank you, sometimes girls just need some compliments:D ...hahaha... the vision of horror why, you don't like diving?
Per, I have another look on the head proportions, thanks for the hint! I know this crazy outfit you're talking about, but I've just decided to give him no full armour. About the suit:
and the fabric gets squeezed to the body if you know what i mean. I'm not really sure what you mean, should it be more like a catsuit or more puffed up?
Unfortunately it's not Laurent diving there, he's much too busy and since now he failed to give me a modeling session - so I always end up with only the second best models:D ! Actually it's the low poly version of a guy I've worked on in my sketchbook thread, perhaps I can give the lady a photograph of him in the hands...
http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d129/daWinky/portrait-small.jpg
Thanks for the nice comment Mark! And of course the metal parts will be brass and copper, the texture is just temporary until I find the time to unwrap the stuff...I've not really an idea where to add some gears, but perhaps I've some inspiration later...
Hi Fotis, oh, you put a lot of pressure here on me:scream: ...thanks a lot for your nice words. And I definitely look forward to some inside of your zBrush work, when you're finished with your entry!
Thank you James and Gilles! By the way Gilles, I've heard you've been eaten by the Gevaudan's Beast, glad to see now that this was only a myth...I hope you'll find some time to continue with your entry!
You see realistic textures, Tony? I've not even started, but I promise I keep going!
Morning Gunie, yep, somehow I want to keep this coloring, it should be a nice contrast to the overall greenish blue tint I've planned...what's his tasks out there? would he maybe need some kind of tool or machinery? A really good question and perhaps the answer to my "more steampunk"-question. He can handle a machine with a lot of gears...an underwater-window-cleaner or something like this. Always great to have you here with just the kind of push I need:love: !
Hey Christopher, I know about the Mickey Mouse ears:D , perhaps I adjust this later, but he will be mainly seen from the side...thanks for the links, I've looked for something like the second one, I'm always eager to start with some realism first! And indeed I've made a quick zBrush-session for the suit, always handy when it comes to folds and creases, I show some wireframes later!
Thanks for the feedback and I wish you all a good day!

Good Morning Sbrina!
About my suit comment. The thing is that this suit is sort of watertight but not totally watertight if you know what i mean. the suit needs to be quite roomy for the guy to move around and gets filled with air pumped inn to the helmet. When you get under vater the pressure from outside squeeze out the air. giving a really funny squized look. couldn't find any good pictures fore you but here are a cuple i hope explain what I mean.
http://www.themaddogdiveteam.com/pixels/Old_suit.jpghttp://www.divingheritage.com/images/spongedivers7.jpg
Cateuit look is a No-No on male divers! But highly desirable on female ons.:buttrock:
I kind of liked this one to.
http://blog.makezine.com/upload/2008/07/diveSuit072808_3.jpg
esecially fond of the two forarmsize tubes going straight innto the guys nostrils! This guy will have no shortage of air for sure! ;)
anyway you are doing a great job Girl so what ever way you want to portray this will be fine with me.
Laurents idea could actually be fine. I mean to have the helmet like now only make the whole thing out of glass.....
could be cool.

Hey Lolo, not enough deformated? Perhaps the flu makes me stupid, but I'm not sure what you're after, this is a pretty much wide angle and even if I go with a true fisheye lens effect, the deformation wouldn't appear along the line of the vanishing point, not?
http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d129/daWinky/fisheye.jpg
But I can do something for the fish bench, I guess painting some fishes and other underwater fauna for the background can be pretty relaxing:) ...
Hi Per, Don`t sit to close to the screen when you answer this. I don't want to get infected Yeah, yeah, the flu makes lonely:sad: , even the cat prefers to keep at distance...and yes, it's still getting worse! I like the diver and corridor (i won't comment on Lady...too soon ) .
The only thing i would ..switch is the liitle gizmo on diver's right....i would put this on the other side of corridor...and i would put the submarine behind him ..and much bigger also.
I am no expert on framing for static images..but i think it would add to general action in view.

The fisheye give deformation of course, but I don't think that will be enough... PotatoHead have right... that need a bit of more action... and of course, straight light don't give easily this thing...
I don't know if that can help... always to follow my first visions of your work... trying to give more action and more depth... ->
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c54/lemog/sabie.jpg
and that give you also more place to put other steampunk machines... fish or beast... algaes, victorian details, ... :arteest:

One small addition; the small ship is exactly between the view of that two characters; I would replace that ship (see edited pic based on lemogs post) or change the angle to correct that.

For some reason I never noticed the caustics before, those look super.
The great thing about 3d is you can change camera angles and settings at will, sometimes as one works on an image and zooms around the viewport one can find cool POVs. But do what you think is right, follow your vision.

Hi Lolo, thanks for taking the time, now I see, it's more a complete change of format ...Somehow I was fixed to the wide screen, but I admit that your overpaint looks much more dynamic. I have to change my plans now for the additional stuff...as always your advice is more than good for me!

I'm just getting around to seeing your new updates! It's really looking good! I like the caustics and the overall "water" feel. A lot of good suggestions have been given already. If I would just add something, it would be the diver's feet. If he's swimming around washing windows or whatever, wouldn't he need some kind of fins on his feet?! Great update, Sabrina  Maybe if the camera was shifted around to be closer to the woman, but slightly behind her, then it might help a bit. Because currently both figures are the same distance/size from the camera and I think it might be nice have some variation there. With the woman such an important part of the scene I'm curious about seeing her closer to the camera. I do like the impression of looking down that glass tunnel too, so the change in camera angle which I'm wondering about is only a minor one. I suppose it would mean that we're seeing the woman from behind but with some nice reflections in the glass we could also see the expression on her face.
By the way, the vastness of the water makes a wonderful background. All that blue! Beautiful!

Hi Sabrina,
Humm, what kind of propulsion device will you come up with! I'm intrigued! The new curved hallway is definately a great addition! :) I prefer the vertical composition, I think it's much more dynamic. Although the characters seem a little deformed...maybe that's cause it was just a quick mock-up sketch... But I do like the background elements that are to the left in the horizontal image, maybe bring those back to the left of the tunnel in ther vertical one.
Let us know which you pick!
What's the next step?

I like the horizontal composition better, there are so many verticals in the wall struts already that to go with a vertical format doesn't feel right to me.
The curved hall looks great.

The curved room looks great now and the view of the water surface from below is to nice to cut away I think... but both formats could work well here. Splendid update!

I'm stamping my feet in approval here, Sabrina. Great update. The curved look works beautifully. I think I prefer the horizontal look too, although like Gunilla said, the surface of the water (seen more clearly in the vertical view) is so good I'd be encouraging you to keep as much of that as is possible.
There is a lot to love about how this image is already looking. The school of fish is superb and the hint of structures and land forms visible in the watery distance makes an intriguing and delightful addition. Definitely no crits from me. I love it!
Hey Sabrina,
The two image looks really great :D Like a lot the school of fish, cool !!
The image gain a lot of deep with the submerged buildings on the background. Maybe I prefer the horizontal format, but think you need to go for a more wider frame ( you can scale the vertical axis of the second image ( the horizontal format)on photoshop, to get an idea of how much you need to widen your image, or not :) ) Again, really awesome work !!

and could give more space for the action between peoples and sea environment.
Nice day for you

Hi Lolo, good to see you back, I hope the week was successfull and also the party of course:beer: ...I see what you mean with the centered perspective, I'll have to play a little more when everything is in place...
I've started a quick construction sketch for my vehicle, after some trying I decided that it has to be something delicate, that fits with the iron and glass framework of the hallway - and about time for some steam and gears here...

The start of a steam-trike or coach construction, couldn't think of something more victorian from the idea...so far just the outline to see what I have to do and if it fits well in the hallway...

very well started... totally in the mood !
About my last sentence, I said that because for me the end of the corridor is almost centered in the scène... more at left and maybe cutted by the framing permit to visually save place for action...
And about my week and especially about the expo inauguration, I will try to post some photos soon on the expo thread...
Nice start of week for you Sabie :wavey:

The steam trike is awesome! Its like a Model T crossed with an old time bicycle. Is the steam pipe connected to the big barrel thing in the back? You could push the size difference in wheels even more, if its Victorian based.

Hey,Sabrina.
Looking great.
Great looking trike Sabrina. I love the toon render to. It sort of gives a different and sharper look than regular rendering. Maybe you should put outlines on the rest as well. :)
This thing might really steam up the windows in there though.

Hey Sabrina! Nice start to the vehicle! It sure is true to the theme! Nicely done! And I also really love that different "outline" render that you used to present it. Looking forward to seeing your model evolve, because right now that bench is looking really uncomfortable! ;)

Aaah, third date, what do you know!?
:D
On the serious side, that's a great looking vehicle, and I like the outlined render, clever
touch!
Adding this to the scene and in the hallway will definitely change the sensation, hopefully
to the better!
I'm sure you will finally find the best cam angle and format, just rely on your senses!
What makes it work for me, in situations like this, I assign a lambert to everything, and
trace the lines in ps, then print it out and start considering the comp on a completely 2d
level! I guess removing the confussion of depth and colors helps me find a suitable format
for the final composition, well, in most cases!
Nice day for you!

Good Morning !
Hey Tony, again the first here, thanks and glad that you like the idea!
Morning Lolo, yes, I understand well what you've said before about the centered hallway...
Waouw... great vehicule... I want the same for Mr. Noah no problem, sent him over for a test-ride!
And about my week and especially about the expo inauguration, I will try to post some photos soon on the expo thread... Photos?...I'm waiting!:bounce:
Hi Nathan, nice to have you here for a visit! The steam pipe is not connected yet, but I'm working on the details right now...and the wheels and gears stuff is so far the only thing I'm not eager to change:scream: , it took me a while to model and adjust it in a way it could really work...
Hi Corrie, thanks... and where is you're thread now, I'm waiting:deal: !
Good Morning and thanks Per! Yeap, I like this render style especially for some quick illustrations, it shows some details without much bothering with material and lighting...
This thing might really steam up the windows in there though. Huh, I haven't thought of this...but it's such a small boiler and a huge hallway:p ...
Hey Gunie and Mark, thank for the visits!
Hi Christopher, oh yes, the bench... I'll take care of a more comfortable seating...thanks from the potential driver for pointing this out!:D
Hey Mathias,Aaah, third date, what do you know!? Huh? But in this case of course an especially cheerful"Hello and thanks" for you!:wavey:
Hi Fotis,I too have trouble with my comp ... Hah, I'm sure your model will look marvelous from each and every point of view, so don't worry...As always thanks for your nice words here, much appreciated!
Hi Jim, glad you like the vehicle, thanks!
Just now I'm in a kind of "only-1-week-until-Xmas" panic:scream: ...so many things to finish before... and so my progress here is really slow, I hope to show a little update later...

Yes, the style is dead on! :) Finally the driver will be more comfortable! ;) Exactly what I had in mind! I love the small details like the steps and stuff. And again a different render style to present it, but just as beautiful! Indeed, everyone is really busy around the holidays...it's a hard time to be completing a challenge! But hopefully we can find some small time chunks here and there and find a way to complete our images! Good luck!

Hi Sabrina, the trike looks fabulous! But I have to point out one little detail about the mechanics before you get any further, it looks to me, that your piston connecting rod needs to be offset from your crankshaft in order to create circular motion. See here: nice diagram (http://www.mgsteam.btinternet.co.uk/hditwork.htm) So all you need to add is a crank between you crankshaft and your connecting rod. Unless I am mis-reading how your device works? Humbly, Jim
Hey Sabrina
Awesome model, love the design on it, really cool! Great details, with elegant touch for sure. Superb work Sabrina!

Hi Sabrina, that vehicle is looking fantastic! I love the design of it.
I thought Jim made a very interesting comment about the piston, by the way. If you wanted to adjust that I don't think it would need much work at all. In fact, I ran the idea past the ducks and they suggested a very small change. Just add a wheel and instead of seeing the piston, you would now see the connecting rod. Here's a quick sketch - looking at it from the same angle as your render, with those added bits

By the way, the ducks were also mighty impressed with your design. One of them said if it had a beak on it, then it would be perfect

Wow, very nice work on the coach winky, keep it up
Morning Sabrina.:)
Wonder full rendering and beauty full details!
Of curse I agree with all Marks comments. Apart from the beak.
A Viking helmet for safety and inhansment of beauty would be more appropriate I think.
Actually some parts that looks like it is designed by the same guys (or girls) that make diving equipment would be nice to mix in some how.
Little round windows on the boiler or something...:hmm:

Hi Nick, nice to have you here for a visit and thanks a lot for your kind comment!
Hi Lolo, glad that you like it so far!... curious to discover it finished Oh yes, me too:curious: ...
Hey Christopher, good to hear that you appreciate the drivers comfort now! And about the holidays, it's usually a time for family and friends for me, lot of visits, god meals and I enjoy to be a little lazy...but I'm so far behind my plan now, that I'm not sure that I can finish in time this way:scream: ...
Hi James, thanks!. If your struggling for things to add, think about how she would control the vehicle etc Good point, though I try to keep this simple...at least a power on/off control would be reasonable:wise: ...
Hey Jim, of course your totally right, the connecting rod is atm not connected at all, I'll take care of this...
Hi Fernando, thanks for the nice comment!:)
Hello Fotis, glad that you like the design, I'll add a little more stuff, but I'm already looking forward to unwrap and texture it:rolleyes: ...I guess you've made your texturing work mainly in zBrush? I'm really curious to discover a little of your workflow when the challenge is over...
Hi Mark, By the way, the ducks were also mighty impressed with your design. One of them said if it had a beak on it, then it would be perfect Oh, I'm flattered to read this, that's a great compliment, though I doubt that I can add a beak here ...but your solution for the piston connection is very elegant and fits well in my concept, so you'll discover it with the next update, thanks!
Hey James, nice to see you again here and thanks for the support!:)
Hey Per, thanks, and I try to pick up the style of diver and hallway with the textures, even if I have no concrete idea right now...A Viking helmet for safety and inhansment of beauty would be more appropriate I think. I'd have a hard time to sell this, I guess the lady prefers something more elegant...and that reminds me, that I've not even really started the character...I have to run!
Hi Corrie, I only believe it, when I actually see your thread:D ...that will be tough with not so much time left...I'm crossing my thumbs!
I was too busy with other stuff, only added bits and pieces and of course connected the rod:wise: , little update will follow soon. I hope I can at least unwrap all of this during the weekend and test some textures...
Wish you all a great weekend!

That is a mighty fine vehicle now! To me it looks like it would work as a charm but who am I to argue with the ducks on this? :D
You may have mentioned this already but who will be riding that thing? The lady?

Good Morning!
Hey Gonzalo, a steamtrike ride instead of a "one-horse open sleigh"? You're invited:) ...and the horn is really cool, I already thought to animate the trike just for fun when the challenge is over, then I'll give it this horn!
Hi Gunie, thanks and yep, better not to argue with the ducks, especially if they are right ...and the lady will drive this vehicle, she's just taking a break to wave "good-bye" to the diver...I hope to make this clearer with the next update, placing an indispensable accessory on the seat:D .

Hi Sabrina. You re doing great with modeling the vehicle. It brings this "steampunk feel" to the scene that i find most enjoyable.
Nothing special about the shaders i did on icarus.Bigger parts unwarped and painted in zbrush and ps.I also used some procedurals for small parts(the model is quite dense cause i did it in z) and tiled metal textures.
Like Lemog said i hope to see more updates till Christmas.
Keep working, its looking very promising:thumbsup:
