View Full Version : Steampunk Myths and Legends Entry: Sabrina Bott
daWinky 12-29-2008, 10:52 AM Too late for a cheerful "Good Morning", but I hope you had all some restful days!
Gunie, thanks, I hope you had some nice days yourself... and something green for the fabric sounds good, just rendering something in this direction!
Hi Lolo,I'm just curious how that could be integrated in the scene...
actually I'm already a little suspicious about it myself:hmm: , I'm rendering a quick composition and show it asap......like much the little bag, yours ? Hehe, you really ask a woman about handbags:D ? I'm sure to have something similar in my collection...
Thanks Mark, now there's just the question how it will fit in the hallway:scream: ...
Hey Fernando, glad you like it so far!
Thanks for the nice comment Christopher, and maybe the umbrella is a nice idea, but what possible reason is there for an umbrella:D ?
Hi Roshan, of course your right, though it's a "clean" environment it needs still a little variation, I think I'll try something in PS ...
Well, I'm still a little lazy from the past days, but the next render is on the way and then I'll have to start the woman's character...

hahaha... you're the only one !
it's the reason why we're here waiting impatiently the next image...
One thing is sure, it's not the good period to advance well... even for me !
In any case... we're all here to support you :wip: Go Sabie... Go...

Lolo, thanks...and support I need, perhaps you have too much faith in me...at the moment I'm still helpless with laughing, seeing the first result! Maybe I have chances in vehicle advertising:D ...

I haven't watched the looong rendering process, so I had the unexpected first impression with this...somehow I've managed unintentionally to create a kind of "Atlantis steamtrike showroom". Perhaps I should just add a pricelabel for the trike and call this a day...So: Wanna buy steamtrike?
Gunilla
12-29-2008, 04:39 PM
OK - the render is really lovely! I like the clean colors in it - very nice mood. Hmm, maybe the trike is a bit dominant right now, but when you add the lady + some plants + something else I'm sure it will look better. Also maybe moving it back a bit? But seriously, this is turning out really great I have no doubt in that you'll make it work fine :)
Lemog
12-29-2008, 08:14 PM
Waouw... I'm just very happy, your rendering is very clean and beautiful...
I don't have anything to suggest... just waiting the next deails... as Gunie said... that will make the following...
Only one thing to change, the position of the submarine... too beside the structure... that leave the depth and disturb the view... but it's a minor detail.
All fits very well for me... all is very visible and have sence in your framing... the way must be followed now... cool Sabie
Now, just give me the price of the streamtrike, I want it for sure :scream:

Nice clean render :) .

12-30-2008, 03:39 AM
Wow! Your new render looks fantastic. I think the steamtrike fits in really well too, especially when I imagine the woman and a few other (minor) bits brought to the scene, as Gunilla and Lemog said.
By the way, I notice the camera is slightly tilted. Is there a reason for that?
Seriously, I love how this image looks already. This looks like it's on its way to being something very beautiful
daWinky
12-30-2008, 05:53 PM
Hey Gunie, but when you add the lady + some plants + something else ... with 12 days left, OMG...I'm glad if I can add a decent character and finish the diver...and the background...:argh:
now I begin to regret the lazy last week! But thanks a lot for your nice comments, I need some motivation now, yesterday I was near to quit!
Lolo, so you really like it, even if I've finally chose the horizontal format:love: ? I'm relieved to hear this and of course you're right about the submarine, I'll put it more in the background... Now, just give me the price of the streamtrike, I want it for sure You can offer the NoahMobile for exchange, that I like very much!:deal:
Thanks James, always happy to see you here for a visit...maybe atm the render is a little too clean!:scream:
Hey Mark, thanks for the nice words...and the tilted camera is just my attempt to support the curved lines and make it a little more dynamic:shrug: ...but if you have a good suggestion in this direction, I'm all ears!

Yea, just a little :P. Could add some sea gunk (white film or so?) and rust (more so copper rust which is blueish green). A little wear and tear :P But keep going, you seem to be on the right track :bounce:
Lemog
12-30-2008, 06:49 PM
so you really like it, even if I've finally chose the horizontal format:love: ?
Yes... that fit well with the global composition... and how eyes are catched... that works :wavey:
I don't notice before that it remain only 12 days until the end for still images... argh... it's very short... but I'm sure you can manage the composition to save time, and to have a very good finished image...
I wish you to have a great end of 2008... see you next year...
and already an Happy New Year
Hey Sabrina,
Really cool update! :D I´m agree with Laurent, the submarine is making tangent with the tunnel structure, you need to move a bit. Think you need to move the "trike" too, to show the end of the glass corridor. Only a comment :D Great work, love the mood of your image.
Happy new year Sabrina, all the best !!

I'm a little late, but wish you all a Happy New Year!
James,A little wear and tear yes, exactly this I think, I'm working on it...Thanks again and all the good wishes for 2009!
Lolo, ah, you're already back, a sign for me to go back to work then. Thanks for the lovely New Year card (I love this little lighthouse!) and wishes:love: ... Hope you had a good time too and of course I wish you and your loved ones all the best for 2009!
Hi Fernando, I take care of the submarine and I see what I can do with the trike, not that the door is so important, but it's just a little too dominant...Glad to hear that you like the mood, thanks and of course my best wishes for the New Year!
Hey Nicolas, thanks for dropping by et Bonne année! Ha, my French is getting better and better:D ...
As Lemog already said, it's not a good time to get things done, but I was busy anyway...for example I wrote a great script:hmm: , that should enable me to render the full resolution of my character in mental ray, there are always problems with MR and big renders...the test render chrashed max so furiously, that I'm afraid I have to make a new installation:scream: , I can only hope this was already the worst cg-accident of the year. So I can only show the latest slightly changed version and a first look of the character in zBrush...

Some little changes of the former composition, most obvious I've put the submarine more in the background and added some DOF to the render...I've already started a new version with the trike more in the background, but this has to wait until max is working again...

Just a quick screenshot from zBrush for the female character, I have to work fast on this one, so I've only painted a rough skin texture and kept the clothes rather simple...
mdavid
01-04-2009, 11:58 AM
Superb work, Sabrina. The pose looks natural. And the clothes look elegant and also styled just right for the scene. I sure can't crit this kind of work. Wonderful stuff
Lemog
01-04-2009, 01:08 PM
Yep... clothes are very good... nothing to crit... good ZB screenshot... very class design
Composition works well... just the first wheel don't must be exactly at the edge of the image... disturbing...
for the rest... at this point, it's good for me... and I'm waiting next additions...
Have a nice sunday Sabie :wavey:
daWinky
01-05-2009, 07:02 AM
Hey Mark, thanks for the encouragement:) ...glad that you like the clothes, I was not sure if something so simple would work...
Morning Lolo, of course you're right with the wheel, already corrected, but I just discovered that the new position cause some other problems, so I'm rendering it again:argh: ...and there won't be much surprises with new additions, not much time left now and I'm just brushing up what I have so far and working on the lady ...first render of her comes soon!
Have all a nice day!

Yes, I saw that this morning... it not remain much time... but you have done the most important, not ?
and remember, photoshop is your friend, and last details could added in post prod !
the most important now is to setup the scene... and to have some good renders as works base... and especially important, with many different layer to play after...
...I have confidence :deal:
Nice week for you Sabie... waiting impatiently the next final steps :wip:

Gunilla
01-05-2009, 08:45 AM
Very nice work on the lady - her outfit is beautiful - leather?
One minor thing is disturbing me with the comp now. To me, the overlap of the trike and the end of the corridor makes it hard to see what is what. Both the engine and the wall has the same dome shape now. Maybe do the end wall in another color to separate the shapes better?
Apart from that, can't crit a thing - you go render now! :)

Happy New Year Sabrina! Glad to see you are still working hard! Even in this very busy time of year, you have some great updates for us! I've been looking around at the latest ones and it's really coming along nicely! :) As has already been said, I feel like the trike is a bit too big...it's hiding (or will potentially hide) a lot of stuff in the backround. and also maybe look too important compared to the lady. Other than that, the lady is looking really great! I also love her clothes, but I think it might be cool to have the more modern top like you have, but finish the bottom of her dress in a more Victorian style, to remind the Victorian elements you have in the background. Anyway, really looking forward to seeing this one to the end! Good luck!

Hi Nicolas, glad to hear you like the clothes, you've done a really good job with the clothes in your entry...have I already mentioned that I'm impatiently waiting to see the textured version of your scene:) ?!
Lolo, so I'm relieved to hear that you don't want to see a lot more modeling:blush: ...beside of the time problem I don't think that much additions make it much better, I always have one rule for my "designs": less is more!:wise:
And yes, I really count on PS for this one, funny enough in my early cg-days (that are not sooo long ago) I always felt like cheating with postwork, like I haven't reached my goal in 3d, now it's unthinkable to finish a rendering without at least some color correction and other "tricks"...
Hi James, Get some hair on her and put her in the scene ... well, I think this is an encouraging comment:D ...thanks, I do my best!
Gunie, hmm, leather would be a good idea, but I've just taken plain fabric for now and I'll only render it again if I hear that it looks terrible:twisted: ...And I see what you mean with the trike and the backdoor, perhaps I can seperate it better with some coloring, thanks for the hint:) !
Finally the lady is rendered, update time...

edit: What is it with the order of the posts here, this I've posted earlier than the update...:banghead:

don't worry... it's a normal way... not ?
About the clothes, I don't imagine something like that... but that works ! good feeling between haircut and fabrics... looks very natural finally with this kind of environment...

Hi Christopher,Wow, took me so long to write my reply, you finally posted before me! Hehe, I'm not sure, one of the servers has obviously a time problem or I'm posting quicker than myself...anyways nice to see you back (still waiting to see your thread updated:twisted: ) and of course a Happy New Year for you too. I feel like the trike is a bit too big...it's hiding (or will potentially hide) a lot of stuff in the backround. and also maybe look too important compared to the lady I've moved it a little in the background for the next update, of course it's still hiding a lot, but these elements are not so crucial for the scene I think...but finish the bottom of her dress in a more Victorian style, to remind the Victorian elements you have in the background You see soon that the skirt has a little volant, I hope this is enough to remind of a victorian style...Thanks for the hints!:)
Hi Nathan, thanks, glad that you like her! I just hope that she'll fit good in the scene:scream: ...

Hey Sabrina,

Morning Sabie...
yes, you are in the good way... the first addition are very good, and as Peppie said... a bit lire thing will be again more good for your image...
deep are rich... for water comes true... that need material inside... all these bubles... plants... planctons... etc
Care with the pipes... they seems to be doesn't affected by their environment, especially in the sea... and by the provided lighting of the hall...
that sounds good Sabie... just continue like that :buttrock:
Nice day for you !
Gunilla
01-08-2009, 07:31 AM
Yeah, looks really good. Perhaps some dirt on the glass between the camera and the diver to make it clear he's outside, but that's just nitpicking. You're definitely on your way with a stunning thing here. :buttrock:

Hey Theresa, nice to have you here for a visit and thanks for your comment...and I'm already busy adding bits and pieces overall, and some bubbles for the diver are a good idea:thumbsup: !
Hi Fernando, thanks for the nice comment...the pose of the diver...yes, not very expressive:shrug: , but I don't think that it's enough time to make some major changes and somehow I like him this way!:D
Hi Lolo, yep, there will come some more stuff for the water...I'm just afraid to do too much, I like the clear lines and colors, but I try:arteest: ...Of course your right with the pipe, I've made some changes...thanks for the hint, I'm already kind of blind for the obvious :hmm: !
Thanks Gunie, good to hear you like it so far and I've picked up your suggestion for the window, perhaps too much now?
It would be good to let this rest for a day and have a fresh look then, but unfortunately I'm very late...
my to-do-list:
-more stuff for the water, bubbles, perhaps some fishes above and a few tiny submarines in the depth...
-a little dirt-work for the trike
-more work on the hair and if I find the time I want to paint some earrings and other tiny details for the lady
-adding a decent DOF-effect
Crits and suggestions are very welcome!

I'd push the refraction of the glass panels (at least 1.5 refraction), the underwater caustics, and some fog for the water. Bluish fog that gets bluer the farther away you get. She seems a little unbalanced in the composition. Maybe that's the camera angle or some lens distortion.

Good morning Sabrina! Yes, I've finally updated my thread, probably not with what you were hoping though... But yeah, your new updates, wow, this is really heading the right way! You will be ready to cross the finish line soon on that steam-trike of yours! ;) If I only have a few comments, I feel the pipe to the right somehow doesn't have the same perspective as the tunnel...is that possible? Also, the lady is looking a bit sick, with her white as sheets skin! ;) Maybe play around a bit with color tones for her skin to give her a little more life! Besides that, all the other little things that were mentionned, bubbles, etc...will all add greatly to the final image. Can't wait to see it!

Last changes are good for me...enough dirty things on glasses... about more details, as Roshan said... bubles will be the last next good addition :wise:
You know... the cloe up view is very very good... I like much... for the final, maybe something between the both will be better, not ?
especially good to see the quality of your models :applause:

Hey Roshan, yep, bubbles are noted and I'll play around with the smoke color - thanks:) !
Nicolas, hehe, and the progress is also as slow as the evolution:D ...thanks for your visit!
Hey Nathan, you're right, there is a camera disortion, but it's consistent for all the scene elements, so she should look ok perspective wise:shrug: ...Thank you for dropping by!
Oh Christopher, just seen Your "update":hmm: ...I'm sorry about it, but I'm very sure there will be a next challenge and I hope to see you then! About the pipe, it's all rendered with the same camera...It's just not parallel to the construction, perhaps I should change this? And the Lady is a victorian Lady (no sun, umbrellas...), and a redhead (always pale)...and she looks healthier than me atm:D ...but I'll see if I can play around with the colors...Thanks a lot for your hints!
Hey Lolo, You know... the cloe up view is very very good... I like much... for the final, maybe something between the both will be better, not ? I'm not sure what you mean, to take just a clipping of the whole scene as final?? Beside of that I'm of course happy to hear that you like it:cool: ...thanks!

Hey Sabrina! Somehow I just felt the pipe should be parallel to the structure. If I had built a structure like that underwater...I'd have run the pipes parallel to the tunnel itself, not in all sorts of direction...I don't know, just nit-picking really! ;)
And about her skin color, it's true, after all, she DOES live underwater...I mean, how much can you tan there...really... But she does look quite sick...maybe just a bit more color to her skin...maybe they have some sort of Victorian style tanning booths down there?!?!

The glass refraction would look great on the curve surfaces. It would probably have to be rendered as a seperate pass though.
daWinky
01-09-2009, 04:10 AM
Morning Lolo, oh yes, thanks for the overpaint, I see...and agree that this looks more interesting, unfortunately I've just rendered out the size to meet the guidelines...this would be too small then and I doubt that I can render it again and make all the postwork in the remaining time:hmm: ...but this would certainly be a framing I use for my personal gallery...
Christopher, I've adjusted the pipe a bit, not really parallel, but almost...a compromise so to say:D ...
And you make me unsure now about the skin , I really think she's all right, but I have a look on it on other monitors, just to be sure:scream: ...perhaps it's the blue-green tint that makes her so unhealthy...thanks again for the critical eyes!
Nathan, well, it's architectural glass with good settings for reflection and refraction and I just got the results I wanted:) ...perhaps it's better to see in the previous, more clean renders...And how do you want to show the influence of refraction in a seperate pass, it's about the interaction with the environment after all...
Again it's not possible to update:banghead: , still server problems it seems, so I try it again later...very annoying, I'm meanwhile so blind for this picture, that I'm desperate for feedback...
Have all a nice day!

Morning Sabie... I understand now that risk to be short to change a lot... anyway, your framing is good... I've proposed that because your characters desserve to be saw more close... the both are very well made
but of course, an image could have a second life after the challenge :deal:
Nice day for you dear...

Hey Konstantin,It`s great, I love it! This is exactly the comment I need now to keep on painting:D , thanks for your support!
Hey Lolo, but of course, an image could have a second life after the challenge a second life, hehe, that's good and I count on this...and I also heard people saying there is a life after the challenge, I'm looking forward:D ...don't know how you can stand the constant challenge and workload of the expo project:scream: and the challenge video on top of this...
Still no upload possible, I don't want to wait for the resurrection of the server. so here is again the whole composition so far and a detail shot...

Sorry for the big pictures, I remove them and make a proper upload as soon as this is possible again...

Just 3 little remarks :
- bubbles too strongly visible... too much bubbles ? too large... too sharp... and maybe some particules everywhere in the water... as little bubbles, plancton, little flying/floating material... not too much visible... but a rich living water...
- outside objects... for me, just need few plants between glasses and pipes... (as vertical stripes... don't know the name...)
- it missed something on the floor, front of the vehicle... but don't know what for the moment... an object... but or course in report with the story...
Nothing more to add for me... it's near now... the pics come beautiful... really...
...don't know how you can stand the constant challenge and workload of the expo project and the challenge video on top of this...
Sincerly... I don't know too :scream: huhuhu

maybe I know what objects could fit... a water bucket and carbon bag...
or a water pipe with a tap, and a water puddle pool on the ground...
Your vehicle need something to work, not ? :wise: hihi

I agree with lemog. Bubbles are too strong right now. Maybe reduce the transparency in photoshop or something. Overall its getting better and better. Great job:thumbsup:

Lolo and Roshan, ha, thanks, you are my rescue here:love:
Ok, I make the bubbles more discreet...and Lolo, I guess you think of some sea weed, good idea...for the front of the vehicle I can only think of some more pieces of luggage...but a pipe with a tape is also nice...I see what I can do!:arteest:

Good morning Sabrina! It's coming along nicely! Now...where is that "I agree with Lolo button"...I can't seem to find it! At any rate, Laurent's coments were dead on. I also like the luggage idea. And where is that Victorian style umbrella...?! ;)
The outside for me is looking pretty good, but I feel like there's a bit missing to fill the inside of the corridor...it's looking a bit empty still.
Did you change her skin...?! Cause in the close-up view it's looking better! Maybe it's just playing tricks on my eyes! ;)
Anyway, keep it up, you can see the finish line!

Lolo, so I just put some more bags there if I find the time...of course in style;) !
Weee, Tony, here you are again, I've missed you around! Thanks for the 'keep going', I'll do my best now for one more day:bounce: ...
Hey Christopher, I've not really changed the skin, just played with the overall tint - good if you like her better now:) ! And yes of course, the luggage...the hallway is a little empty...I'll add the bags if I can quickly make something that looks good, but it's just a kind of gangway after all...
Last update for today follows, so I have a little time tomorrow for the very last additions:scream: ...
Wish you all a great weekend!

Hey Sabrina! The image really is awesome! These will probably be the last comments I give before you post your final image...so here goes:
There's only two things that I feel, personally, are missing to the image.
1) That Victorian style umbrella. I know I keep mentionning it, but I think it would just fit really well, especially since it looks as though her right hand is already posed for her to lean on it! ;) I think it would really bring her character together.
2) This (http://farm1.static.flickr.com/129/338168186_e265818e2f.jpg?v=1191132597). I feel you need a little bit more light coming from the surface. Maybe even some of those rays. I like the nice highlights on the diver's suit, but there doesn't seem to be enough light coming from the surface to warrent them. This is all stuff you can do relatively quickly in Photoshop.
Like I said, these are my personal suggestions! :)
Hope I could help a bit! :)

huhu... why not the Victorian Umbrella... that could fit...
just a point which doesn't disturb me before, but now... I saw only that... she doesn't have jewels ? a woman ? :scream:
I like much the strange blue beast... octopussy or other thing ? modelized or drawed ?
I will be glad to see a snapshot of it... just curious to discover his complete design...
...or maybe you want to keep the secret
In any case... in large... it's great
Flossie must be proud of you :buttrock:
and don't worry about uploader... even for me, it doesn't work :surprised
I wish you some good last additions :bounce:

Lovely details! I really like the school of fish and the steam from the trike now separates it better from the wall behind. Excellent work!
So, the server is still down and I'm just trying to figure out when the last day for submission is! We still have tomorrow, right?

This is all looking fantastic, Sabrina. Just wonderful. What is that creature down below, visible through the circular hole? Although maybe it is more fun to not know the answer to that question! (the mystery about that adds to the fun). You've succeeded in creating a real underwater feel about this image - which is not nearly as easy to do as it sounds - so I'm back to stamping my feet in approval again. It looks so good now. Good luck with getting it uploaded

Christopher, two good points you have there...I know what you mean about the lighting, it seems they have some mysterious lightsources down there...but I've tried to play a little with your suggestion and for some reason I lost this underwaterfeeling, so I've made no more than a little adjustment actually. Finally you have convinced me about the umbrella, but it would only look good if she is carrying it, or leaning on it, like you suggested...but to make it convincing I have to make some serious overpainting so I better keep this in mind for the pictures "second life"...Thanks a lot for your support and critic here, it helped a lot for sure:) !
Lolo, jewelery was on my last to-do list, if there is enough time for it...I tried a real quick version of earrings and something for the hairs, but it was not so good and so I better leave her alone for now. The blue beast is a little painted jellyfish, I just had this feeling to put something in this hole:D ...right now he is only what you see, but somewhere on my layers there should be a complete version to show you...
Gunie, good to hear that the steam solved a problem...and thanks for the nice words:) .
About the deadline, you've seen my post I guess...meanwhile the info pages are available again, I'm still not sure about the time shift , but we should be on the save side if we submit our finals on Sunday...
Mark, glad to see your nice comment! The mysterious creature is a jellyfish, hope you still like it now...And luck with the upload is a good wish for sure:D !
Thanks for the nice words Nick, much appreciated!:wavey:
Hey Jim, I especially like the word "finish" in your comment:D , thanks for the support!
I try to update now the "prefinal" version, if I hear no devastating critics and the deadline is not moved I'll just write the little story about it and upload this version as my final...
-sabrina
edit: The upload has again the wrong time, seems the problems are not solved after all...and on the submisson page the countdown says :2 days and 13 hours left...so perhaps still time for painting jewels, if at least this information is reliable!

Hey Sabrina, the ducks have kindly allowed me enough time away from their project to comment on your final image. And what a great final image it is too! You already know I love the underwater effects but what the heck, I've just said it once more. You bring amazing skill, enthusiasm and experience to these challenges and it's a real treat watching you work. This final image is another triumph. It's steampunk. And it's beautiful. And there's plenty of cool stuff to discover each time I look at the high res. Good luck with this entry, and I sure hope to see you back for another challenge
