Okay after two dozen thumbnail sketches and looking through the threads and becoming very inspired by all you talented people I decided to use Sir Wonka as my base. I hope its appropriate, anyway I will be working out this composition a little bit further but here is a little pre-viz for you.

The image well be done in more of a Gene Wilder sort of way kinda psychopathic. Well at least that's what I'm shooting for. It will be around the part where they take the boat into the cave, sorry if it was obvious already.

I will be doing this in Maya and from the looks of it rendering in a bunch of chucks.

Thanks for checking cc's welcomed!

Nice idea. Think Willy Wonka's factory is ideal to get "steampunked". I think you've also chosen one of the key moments of the story, and represents perfectly the story as a whole.

On the technichal side, I like the perspective you're going with. Nice!

It's a good idea but the FAQ has been updated regarding content. Willy Wonka is a trademarked Character as is the Wonka Brand. The story is too recent and not in the public domain.

Q: Please can I use a modern or current Myth?

A: No entrant should use a likeness of any living person or base their story on any modern material as this would constitute a violation of rights unless you have gained written permission to do so.

To avoid any potential problems all entrants should base their works on public domain Myths and Legends -- all of the traditional Myths and Legends we know of are in the public domain.

Cool Beans I didn't catch that however I did plan for it so thanks for the heads up!

andrewpyott- thanks for the comment I think due to the situation I won't be doing wonka any more but I think I will continue to use this kind of composition.

Thanks again guys!

Being that the Flying Dutchy is so popular I decided to shift my focus towards it's captain. Utilizing my previous composition.

Here's the story -

Captain Hendrik van der Decken had just offloaded his cargo in Cape Town and was anxious to get back to sea again in his ship, the Flying Dutchman. His crew, however, begged to to stay in port, as the weather was turning foul and they were scared to sail in the dangerous Cape waters in such conditions. Van der Decken would not listen and he sailed out of Cape Town straight into a hurricane. For days he fought against the elements, even lashing himself to the wheel, so that he would not be swept overboard. His crew pleaded with hinm to turn back, but he would not listen. He was like a madman – pitching his small vessel against the mighty storm.

He cursed God, saying that even He could not make him change his mind and swore that he would sail on until he met the ends of the earth. As he said this, the storm seemed to instantly die down and a ghost appeared on the ship. All the crew instantly fell down dead, but van der Decken fired his gun at the figure. His arm immediately withered and became useless. The shipp glowed a res colour and disappeared forever into the storm.

The legend says that the Flying Dutchman continues to sail forever, as a ghost ship, trying still to sail around the Cape of Storms.

Glad to see you've managed to find an alternative inspiration. My only doubt is if the cool perspective you had going for the other piece will be the most apropiate for this story. IMO, the coolest element of this story is the captain fighting against the elements, but I think that maybe that should be told with a diferent kind of perspective. I don't know if I've managed to get my message across to you. I wish you good luck anyhow, and can't wait to see how it ends up.

This the Hendrick I think I'll go for, most artwork I've seen,(all three images) one of which, he had long hair looked like a bad wig so I'm going for something shorter.

CC'S welcomed Thanks

andrewpyott - Thanks again, I think you may be right I'll have to be careful with how the story and the composition work together. Without wasting too much time I think I'll start blocking everything in and test out a few different setups.

So a little work in progress, where I came up with a wired idea of having a steam powered ocean made of metallic tiles with pistons that control their movement. Pulling it off is a "PIA" but its fun so who cares!
Anyway the idea is that the ocean much like the story will be a trial for the ship to navigate through. Just for size reference each tile represents approximately 400sq ft.

Still getting everything together with some luck and hard work I'll be able to start testing the waters so to speak. :)

Nice work. I like the long sleek look of your ship. The water to should is an interesting touch. I hope it works out. Are those pipes up front for exhaust? I think the joints look a little odd, kind of like part of those bendy straws. i like the little details on the boat. Good Luck.

"bendy straws" :) Never thought of them that way but I think you're right, they are what would be the exhaust but in a way that would help the vessel move about the plates of water easier.

I'll re-work the joints and make them more mechanical,

Thanks man

Really cool concept Wendell.
will there be a mechanical sky in the back as well?
The trick here must be to make it look like roaring mechanical steam storm. :)
I have great hopes for this "flying dustman" idea of yours!
looking forward to more updates.:wip:

In this image I wanted to depict a moment in time where the cursed ghost ship could be seen charging through the ocean. I wanted to give the ship life through a steampunk eye and make it seem as though the ship and the ocean were in battle. This is my take on the Flying Dutchman and the metallic ocean in which it is cursed to sail forever.
