This topic is just to tempting to not join in to... I'm not sure about how much time I'll have but I do my best.
My first thought would be making a Trojan horse ... not the only one in the challenge I suspect. Maybe I come up with something better later.

Let the fun begin and good luck all!

Héhé... finally... you're here ! haha... good news...

I wish you all the best for this challenge, and as many of us, I hope you could find time to finish the image in time.

The trojan horse is anyway a good theme... especially if we considere your own style... wich could make the difference.
Just have to find a good composition... wich works... and go !

Well, no sketche here until weekend at the earliest, I need to keep the workpile under control... :(

After doing some more thinking I've come up with an alternative idea. The passage between Schylla and Charybdis - could be the scene for some real steamy action. Maybe that would be a better theme, we'll see.

My major source of inspiration for this comes from the work of Alice and Martin Provensen.

As a kid I had a couple of books that I later came to understand influenced my taste for illustration more than others. One of them was a wonderful book about the Iliad and the Odysee. I could look in it for hours admiring the images and living myself into the adventures. A while back I found my old book and to my big surprise I still find it as fascinating as I did as a kid. The challenge will be to combine the modenistic style of these illustrations with a steam punk style. I've no idea on how to do that yet but I'll give it a try.
I will do this in a combination between 2d and 3d.

On Odysseus way home he had to pass between two monsters, Skylla and Kharybdis. Kharybdis would swallow the whole sea and then through it up again and Skylla was a eight headed monster snapping everything that come near. In the choice of loosing his whole ship or risk his men Odysseus choosed to go near Skylla. Two men where lost.

This is my current idea - with making the monsters in steam punk style. There may be other ides popping up before I choose the one to go with.

This is the boat of Odysseus. This one may or may not go into the scene. It will maybe be made steamdriven if included.
Just had to have something started here.

Great looking monster Gunilla! Even though i guess the heads is just duplicates they seem to have different personality's/emotions. Aggressive, curious, sleepy and the one in the back looks a bit worried. :)

the challenge will be to get them to look real humongous sized. the boat and landscape will give a sense of scale i imagine.

11-18-2008, 04:37 PM
Hmmm.... Looking nice but a bit unsure about the mechanical part. a long rod like this could move the oars i guess but should maybe be moved like the way the wheels of a locomotive works. If you know what I mean.
However you can make this work like a mystical strange and alien type of steam machinery.

Hey Gunilla nice work on the boat motor. You know if you want to keep the engineer types quiet you could add a little housing box to cover a part of the linkage and gears. Then nobody can debate whether it could 'actually work' or not. And I won't have to fly over to Norway and slap Try with a leather glove for making more female logic jokes. ;-)

11-19-2008, 09:00 AM
Morning team! Thanks a lot for all the comments here.

Scooter - thanks, and the texture - my plan was to keep it like this, rather simple. But I will decide once i get a bit futher down. Maybe some worn details will be needed.

Antone - sail, it's called a sail :) and that is a good idea - perhaps it will be in the next revision!

Try - well you know, not only women comes from a different planet, steamdriven ancient boats does too ;)

Lolo - ahh, that's sweet

Nico - thanks, glad you like it!

Steph - glad you think it goes into the stempunk style now. And for the oarsmen, what Sabie sais and also, when there are no dangers ahead they can use the time to play cards, fishing, telling silly jokes and other important stuff. :D

Andreas - indeed, it's not all that steamy but I didn't want the engine to visually kill the shapes of the boat wich I like a lot. Hopefully in the end it will have enough steam.

Jim - that is a good idea! I may try something like that since I begin to feel a lot of comments coming about the sad level of engineering.

And I won't have to fly over to Norway and slap Try with a leather glove for making more female logic jokes. ;-)

Touché! :applause:

Fernando - thanks, also a good suggestion - maybe I add that later.

Sabie - morning, good! If it works designwise was really what I wanted to know - I'm quite aware that technically it wouldn't. My locic isn't that much female - ( what on earth is happening with us writing things like that?) :argh: :D

And indeed, this is turning out a bloody challenge with all this bloody things around - it's the style of the year

Ramon - thanks and yes, really fun this. I'm gald you mentioned Charybdis, cause I'm a bit uncertain about her. I've always thought of her as another monster, sort of built in her island but now I find sourses that says she's no monster at all, only a huge stream whirl in the water... not so fun so I think I will do as planned and make a living monster.

Have a good day all!

11-21-2008, 01:52 PM
Gilles - thanks, and go, go, go back to you! :)

Mark - thanks and yes, it is really important to think about the comfort of the workers employed. I really wouldn't want them to go on strike for me, we all know how difficult that can become in the later stages of a challenge!

mathias - thank you, I begin to have an idea of the colorset now. The fin? Ermm, Phuiii... later this weekend, OK? I've been stuck with such unpleasant things as actual paid work for some days :)

I guess this is how it's going to be for me this time - updates some days and total silence others. I will keep an eye on you all though, make sure of that.

Morning Gunie,

ah, another weekend update I've nearly missed! I begin to see now how you'll manage to mix 2d and 3d in an amazing way, with the texture your Skylla really pops out of the background...so well done:thumbsup: . And Skylla already has a lot of character...well, multiple characters in fact:D ...I love the idea of the split personality you've mentioned before...

Have a great start in the week!

Antone - thanks for cheering, much needed atm

Lolo - Gunillish? :D Glad you like it, I'm beginning to see all the difficulties in making a working mix between ancient greek, 50:ies arty style and steampunk - hope I will manage to find a good mix here.

Carl - hej and thanks!

Jim - yeah, that's the idea... or one of them. We'll see if it works out.

Mark - OK, seems the colorset is all set now then - thanks mate!

Nico - good, glad you like it.

Steph - almost late again, huh? That is sooo Stephish :D And thanks for liking!

Sabie - oh, I still got a long way to go before I solve the rather vague idea of how to mixing 2d and 3d for this one. And certainly Skylla will have more different faces - it could be fun to have two of the disagreeing for instance. A great start for you too.

So, some work will come in the way this week but next step will have to be getting started on the environment.

thanks all for your interest :bounce:

Hey Gunilla nice work on steamboat:thumbsup:. Don't worry too much about making the functions convincing, it should be more promising and little convincing:). One suggestion from me is make the textures little dirty. Maybe some small rust but don't overdo it. You can add some texture details directly in photoshop with blending and masking techniques.

Keep up the great work:)

OK - so this time of year have been filled with a lot of other stuff so if I'm going to finish this I really have to speed things up. Gonna give it a try.
Below is an updated of the comp, some rough lighting added. Since I wont be able to render this on my home machine I will prepae the files and have the office machine render it. That will give me approximately three days for comp, adding of the men, water etc.

This was not at all my original thoughts for the water... but maybe something like this could work OK - what do you think?

Gunilla
01-05-2009, 02:00 PM
Mark - glad you think it's improved. The leaning back is now due to a wave - frankly, I've no idea yet as how to proceed with the crew. Well, that's the charm of it isn't it? To have to skip the glourious plans made in the start for a quick and dirty solution.

Lolo - Oh yes, that looks much better. One thing, I'm getting really annoyed about the Skylla... don't know if she could be so big. Maybe I have to redo her but will the time permit? At least her necks needs to be remade, they look awful :banghead:

Gunilla
01-08-2009, 08:27 AM
Good morning!

Lolo - OK, the necks stays, thanks! And for the water and cliffs, I'd like to keep it rather simple, stylized. Hoping that will fit the image fine - we'll see.

Mark - yup - that keyboard shortcut would come in very handy from time to time. thanks for cheering!

Ferx - thanks, and yes a lot of things have to be made in photoshop - question is, will there be time? :hmm:

Lolo - good morning :) Yes, my machine is now rendering away as I type. I managed to render the full image in stripes and are now adding some things that didn't turn out right. I think I have what I need to complete it... except 6-7 sailors on the ship!!
Today will be spent on tryimng to make some in 2d that could fit the style - if I fail I will have to pretend they have all fallen in the sea :D

Roshan - thanks for the suggestions, I will see how much time I'll have for post. It's running short now.

So, I'm still at it but not sure if I will make it on time since I again have some other stuff to work on that can't wait. But hey, we still have what is it - 4 days?

On Odysseus way home he had to pass between two monsters, Skylla and Kharybdis. Kharybdis would swallow the whole sea and then through it up again and Skylla was a eight headed monster snapping everything that come near. In the choice of loosing his whole ship or risk his men Odysseus choosed to go near Skylla. Two men where lost, but they managed to get through.

Hey, Gunilla's finished! Bravo! I think you've succeeded beautifully with the mix of 2D and 3D. This is another wonderful image and you've done a fantastic job at mixing steampunk with an ancient mythological feel. I really like the strong, simple composition and colour palette and the scene has enough energy and interesting action going on to attract a second and third and fourth look. Congratulations to you, and the very best of luck from a Sydney artist and about 10,000 ducks

By the way, the saturation and brightness look just perfect on this monitor

Congrats Gunilla on getting this one done. That is a wild and unique image, it makes me think of a crazy mythical video game session about to go wrong. Great work.

Sabie, Lolo, Nico, Roshan, Tony, Mark, Bamu, Steven, James, Hamid, Per, Jim - a big thanks for your greetings and wellwishes. As always it's been a treat being here, and the biggest part of it is the splendid company from you all

Even if I haven't spent as much time with this image as with my previous challenge entries I'm kind of pleased with how it turned out. It was a good opportunity to try this mix of 2d and 3d that I've been curious about trying out for a while now. No doubt, more images in this style will be made in the future.

So, until the next time - have lots of fun, see you around!
