Always cool updates here my dear Lolo. Have you spent a good week end?

Yep... the week-end was almost good... but short and tiring... :wise:

This is a really cool mechanism, and will be so nice when it unfolds like that.
Don't know for the moment... but I will used certainly a ùiw of 3d shader and tiling textures... more fast and more easy

Nicolas & Tony -> thanks

Now... I must prepare the update for the Vieux Paris

And I thought something... about the animation and the environment...

What will be the better ? a poor environment as showed in the animation test... with desolated trees... stones...

or something more rich... with city, roads... and for this case, if you find that better, I could continue to work on the next buildings of the Vieux Paris, and integrate them in the Noah's Ark scene ?

what do you think ?
Desolated_Steampunk or Medieval_Steampunk ?

Great mechanism with the propeller, that was exactly what I meant with "more weight for the ark" in the video, things like this are real eyecatcher - at least for me:D .
what do you think ?Desolated_Steampunk or Medieval_Steampunk ?

For the environment? Simple, a lot of rising water! :wise:
Naaa, just kidding, I think it would be great to see a part of the "Vieux Paris" in the background, makes not much sense of course, but way more interesting than some wasteland...

Hm ...

:buttrock:

Hm...I like the idea of the 'desolated' steampunk, but if you really want vieux paris in the background, go for it. :D It'll make it harder for people to know that it's Noah's Ark if you have a medieval background though, a bit too much of a mix of ages? (Biblical, steampunk, medieval...)

Thanks girls for your clear advices...

about the buildings, it's moreover an excuse for me to advance on the challenge and the expo in the same time... because sincerly... I don't know how I could be finish the both in time...

but it's sure that the story will be more "visible" with something more simple... with much water... (with Nessie ? huhu)

...and that will be more without age of course !

Maybe I must try in first the train and animals... with why not Mister Noah as locomotiv driver ? :wise:

Lol @ Nessie, try putting her in the background, maybe that's where she came from... a random mutation of an animal who fell out of Noah's Ark?!

My vote goes for the poor environment. Just keep it simple as it is and it will bring more focus to the arc and the exploding animals. That's my thoughts anyway :)

I was very pleased to see you had an entry in this challenge! :) I have to say your work is very inspirational! Especially your reconstruction of L'Exposition Universelle de Paris de 1900. It was very stirring stuff to go through as I was working on my school project of the reconstructing of Notre-Dame de Paris (see signature if you want). I'm really looking forward to following your progress! The propeller design is already very impressive.

Bonne chance!

very good updates of the ark, I really like all the mechanical details and it's very much in steampunk-style now! Of course I'm looking forward to see the whole thing textured...
I must ask to sabrina then... :D Well, I can't say something about Nessie, but I would be glad to see Flossy left behind, she's very good in swimming and staying away from the ark will rise her life expectancy:twisted: ...

Finally, I don't think to use it in the challenge... certainly a blend between mythic and medieval is not so good... or just a desolated face...
If I found time today... I will try to do a little test... in any case, I will post the first part of the palace today on the Vieux Paris thread ! :wip:
I saw your dream... not so horrible after your artistic vision...

what poly count do you have until now on the ark ?
in the next update, with the balloon and some other details, and now all animated pieces... finally around 150 000...

You know I have said it before I`d like to see some of your beautifull Paris buildings inn there. So I would definitely like to have them in the background. Maybe the wagon train with animals could come from the local Zoo. That would make sense in a funny way in my head.:D

Morning Laurent.
Ah... the test render is wonderful!
great motion on the mechanical parts. If anything maybe a bit to smooth the part when the propellers fold out. If the parts start and stop a bit more mechanically. and sway a bit after they stop the feeling of size and weight would be better.

Also the wires going up to the balloon are bending the whole time and not stretching naturally. unless they are made of bamboo and should bend like this.

But we are getting into the fine details here.
this is really a great steam punk machine buddy.

Do you have some idea for materials?
I have many ideas for material...
basic and paint metal sheet... it's the logical first...
but I'm ask me about somthing veru different... especially depend of the environment...
to keep a good contrast... under the sad and bad weather...

I love the deployment of the props! It reminds me of the USMC Osprey.
-> héhé... but the Osprey is less modern than mine... try to put inside thousands of animals... hahaha
Thanks to stop here man...

wow, you never fail to impress me!
This works like a dream, fantastic work, Maestro!
-> you make me very confused darling... this realisation is not very different than in the GSO challenge ?
the only difference is that's video now... and my computer is a bit stronger... that's all...
but thanks for your words... so good to motivate me !

-> that's a very good remark ! must add some weight to all that !
thanks man...

Also the wires going up to the balloon are bending the whole time and not stretching naturally. unless they are made of bamboo and should bend like this.
-> in fact, I have imagined some gum's wire... something very smooth... less wires if that was with cords, diameter a bit stronger as caoutchouc...
but maybe it's a bad idea.
I must acknowledge that for the moment, I don't thought much to this detail... must think so...
thanks for your interesting comments Per...

As I said yesterday, I've made some test while adding some medieval buildings... you cou see now exactly what I've had in my mind... only for the first part of the animation... when the train qui the city... by a long gate sides by these houses...

what do you think ?

Does it work ? or maybe I could keep the idea, with some other buildings, more mythologics and/or desolated ?

I also could put in the scene some old broken egyptian temples ;-))))

you make me very confused darling... this realisation is not very different than in the GSO challenge ?the only difference is that's video now... and my computer is a bit stronger... that's all...

Just take the compliment!:) I see the similarities of course, but I'm impressed nevertheless - especially knowing your other workload it's just amazing what you produce here...

Another shot for this environment...

I forget something... some days ago, I've planed to add in the scene a lighthouse !

What style ? I'm not sure... certainly a bit primitive at the top. but with metallic legs.

Why ? to add more light effects in the scene, to enrich more the particular lighting.

 huhu... then, just thanks dear friend... (I'm touched)

But you know, in this challenge, my feeling is a bit strange... I don't at all to the final goal, to the deadline...
usually, I always planed something really precise for the progress in time... and now... nothing ! I have the tourist feeling :banghead: is it grave doctor ? huhu

Even if I already made much images and animations test... there's not much work... (and steamboat textures are not started... huhu)
...and it remain more to do... especially all animals...

I'm always very not sure about their design... one I like, is as these little painted animals in wood... simple but with warm colors... something in this style, but more metalical...

must do some tests... and remember, I need to fill 30 wagons ! couple or not couple ?

I also like much this type of render... but I'm not sure to keep it at final... I'm afraid that textures don't work much... or I must adapt these textures to this render... and if this case... that must be simply textured...

Thanks for your interest Nico

Thanks for your advice, it's finally so good for me...
and like that, maybe I could keep the buildings almost visible at left... just for the spectator know the action in place...

I forget to explain my new idea about the beginning of the story... find this morning in the shower...

as many of you ask about Mister Noah was visible...
maybe it could appear at the end, seatted on the realisator chair (it's wrote on it "Noah - Director")... who said "coupé"...
hmm how it's in english "cutted" ? "finished" ? as when we film a real film...
and the film finish, we could see in the generic some little picture... and we saw all details are false, as theater decoration.

huhu... I don't know if that give something interesting or funny... but anyway, that give a, happy end... more than mine with the massacre...

(but I have in reserve an another story with a good end)

That make many years I want to know a Babel tower... but I don't know if that will be a good mix with medieval...

but where I'm okay with you... it miss something (it's more visible on an another shot, but I've dont show it for the moment, and I think also to a tower... patience :wavey:

Of course, when I have this idea of lighthouse, I think to you... but the one I have in my head is more "tribal" ;-)
But if I adopt the lighthouse, I must delete the medieval street I think...

or other solution, I use a medieval tower... with a steampunk part at the top... that could be a solution...
in this case, I could test some thins with volumetric lights, I don't have much skill...

And I really like the new idea of a film in a film, especially with the happy end! And I'm curious to hear the idea you still have not told us...

huhu... I can say more so...
you remember when the train enter in the seamboat... and the funny feeling, how it could keep in the hull ?
then, after the explosion, at the moment when all people are sad... the camera come back to the starting point of the steamboat... to discover that finally the train of animals was not take off with the machine... but in fact all wagons and animals floating under the see :scream:

I'm surprised since I didn't think the medieval strett would fit in but it really does! This could be very nice for the start of it all. Bravo!
The idea of Noah as the director is also very cool it could make a nice twist for the end. As for the animals being in the water instead of in the ship I think... maybe one twist to much? I think you should go with either Noah-the director or the disappearing wagons. Does that makes sense?
But what do I know - only you have all the plans in your head and know if it's going to work. So, just keep them coming!

Finally, the last one seem better ? and as animals are in a train... why not to accroch along some buoys ! :)

I'm surprised since I didn't think the medieval strett would fit in but it really does!

I understand well your point of you... in fact, I don't know if you really see that, but in my story I take the choice of a funny story...
well... I like to have this decay... each animals will be in a long train... animals bigger than their wagons, and also a train too big to totally enter in the SteamBoat...
it's my choice... huhu... a bit mad ? why not... :scream:

It's as all... just need to work and test... it's not really my domain...

and in this case, I could test many things in this challenge... particles, smoke, rain, explosion, lightyears, and so... useful for me... :)

I start last evening some texturing tests... for change a little and doesn't used my usual style of texturing, I've decided to do something very different for the steamboat, and without texture maps... only procedural shaders... that could be a good change... and may give a good constrast with the environment...

And maybe I could use this technique too for steampunk animals !

Hello Sabie...
well, well... I understand this point... in fact, I don't think that was a very good idea I've made this test like that...
...when I do it, I've imagined the balloon just over the chimney... with the smoke a bit protected by it... but it's certainly not possible, I'm not sure...
In other hand, I've tried somethig wish doesn't work, smoke pushed by rain and wind seem strangely too much perpendicular to the rain... and the result don't agree me a lot.

What can I do ? an another test... but with ALL the Steamboat... to see if that work better, or if that appear again very odd and strange to see.

Thanks for your good eyes Sabrina... best wek-end for you

nice tests.

rain is a bit slow

the steam machine looks cool. About the smoke i'd say it shouldn't move up. That is a general misconseption of smoke and steam, both are either as heavy as air or heavier. So it should ofcourse move up because of the pressure, then stop, and move with the wind, or move with the wind and down.
also. smoke looks much more awesome when it moves horisontally. makes it more... carismatic  i guess

about smoke... I see that this test is not totally as it is really show with all the other elements... before to change something... I will post tomorrow an another animation test... but with all... environment, steamboat... and many that will have more the look I want...

Hey - sorry I'm late for all these updates. First - I like what you have going with the smoke/steam. Maybe as some mention it could perhaps follow the wind and the speed/direction of the ship but I'm sure that will be solved later. Very good mood with the rain so far!

Hey there!

Laurent! I feel like jealous right now buddy! your works got really awesome man! Damn!
all thing is getting shape and well formed, really nice done sofar, I really like it (honestly!)
but I have some comments for u: (technically alot after that hibernate of my communication here!)

1. the rain looks really better now, I'll strongly recommend using another rain angle for first shot (that have a different angle), it will make a better feel of real rain;

2.the steam/smoke looks really good by now, I like it, ah! OK! I love it! :D

3. the wagon's move really fast at the starting shot, looks like a fast forwarded film! maybe alil slower make it looks even better (it looks awesome right now as other aspects, probably my favorite shot!)

4. I really hope there will be more creature variation on the cages than just camels! or atleast camels with different poses! (I believe it would be on your to do lists by now)
5. one thing really catch my eyes was the roof of last wagon u just animated! really nice touch bro! welldone!

6. tough u need a bridge for camels sake by now! (I guess it's in your plan also)

7. the explosion needs more work for sure and I can't wait to see that Real EXPO then, but just as now, though it's better if u put this primitive explosion back on the cliff not front of this coz seems just mister Noah is on the other side of mountain at the moment!

8. the story, timing and the way it whole goes just Rocks man! really great and funny! makes me laugh every time I see it! whole thing happened in a moment when u just didn't expect that! and this is nice

All in all sooo nice work sofar! Damn again! and one more thing I like to say really! Hate u man! Ate u! http://www.pic4ever.com/images/128fs318181.gif

Hey there!

Laurent! I feel like jealous right now buddy! your works got really awesome man! Damn!
all thing is getting shape and well formed, really nice done sofar, I really like it (honestly!)
but I have some comments for u: (technically alot after that hibernate of my
huhu...
thanks a lot mate to take much time for me !
and you don't have to be jalous at all... when I see your incredible work with Artaban... also you way to show us what you do... I appreciate a lot you !

Now, the answers :

1. the rain looks really better now, I'll strongly recommend using another rain angle for first shot (that have a different angle), it will make a better feel of real rain;
-> yes of course... the first shot is not sure to keep like that, and certainly I add another plan... before to really start with the large framing...
but you point something I must think... change the rain following differents shots...
In fact, I can't manage this project totally clear for me... and if I can work on it, it's always while working on other projects...
and of course, at final, I will forget many thinhs huhuhuhu

2.the steam/smoke looks really good by now, I like it, ah! OK! I love it!
-> so good for me, that was the goal in this video

3. the wagon's move really fast at the starting shot, looks like a fast forwarded film! maybe alil slower make it looks even better (it looks awesome right now as other aspects, probably my favorite shot!)
-> totally ok with you... and in other hand, as I must built the other wagons, with also animals,
if I want they will be visible, I must do something slower... or...
I've imagined (but not totally clear in my mind), to put between 2 first plans an action in stop-motion...
like that, animals will be more visible... well... depend...

4. I really hope there will be more creature variation on the cages than just camels! or atleast camels with different poses! (I believe it would be on your to do lists by now)
-> yes, it's in the todolist... not all decided, but in first I'va planed to do each wagon different, following the animals type inside...
but only if I could find time...

5. one thing really catch my eyes was the roof of last wagon u just animated! really nice touch bro! welldone!
-> huhu I undestand, I don't know if that will be possible at final... as all wagons will have certainly no roof...
with the animals heads up !

6. tough u need a bridge for camels sake by now! (I guess it's in your plan also)
-> it's no make for the moment, because I was not totally sure to keep the medieval environment...
but now... I'm sure at 95,5 %

7. the explosion needs more work for sure and I can't wait to see that Real EXPO then, but just as now, though it's better if u put this primitive explosion back on the cliff not front of this coz seems just mister Noah is on the other side of mountain at the moment!
-> I will rework on the explosion very late, when all things will be in the same, and all framing totally choose.

8. the story, timing and the way it whole goes just Rocks man! really great and funny! makes me laugh every time I see it! whole thing happened in a moment when u just didn't expect that! and this is nice
-> it's also the speed wich make that... With the details wich comes, I hope this funny feeling will be always here...

In any cas, thank's a lot master for all these good remarks...
and one thing is sure, that will be good for me to write my todo list

but also... I like a lot the free development... especially in this kind of challenge.
I can't work like that professionnaly, well... it's so good to doesn't know exactly what to add the tomorrow !
Again thank you...

and now, I think it's time for update... textures of the steamboat !

well the ark looks very good textured...congrats:applause:

but i have a very strange feeling about its proportions and overall scale....maybe because of those lightning poles (they seem a bit massive, maybe you wanted them to be exaggerated), and that gives me the impression that the ark is not so massive as it should be

Wee, looks good together now. The rain is also much better, great.
Only comment is I think that the wagons maybe move to fast - there is almost no time to see what's in them, especially now when the weather is getting worse.

Morning Lolo,

ah, a lot of nice updates! Great to see the ark now in all it's glory - and with the textures of course. The procedural stuff works pretty well here, even better in the animation test! I like the overall mood very much:thumbsup: . Perhaps it's a little too much for the balloon, in the stills it looks actually like it's got a lot of grime from the chimney and in the animation it seems that he already caught fire. But maybe it's just me, I'm picky this morning...By the way I like the change you've made for the rain! Not much difference from what I see out of the window:hmm: ...

You must be running on something more than steam buddy.
For I cant keep up with all your updates.
I was about to comment that the dirty texture on the ballon was a bit much. but now it looks great.

I`m a bit worried about the rein efect though. I have been playing around with some rain shots at work and it creates some really annoying noise in parts of the scene. I saw you had some of the same over the water in the back to on your earlier tests.

You`l work it out though I`m sure.
Are you planning to have this finished by the ned of the week?
at this speed it shouldent be a problem I would think.:wip:

ouai... la faute à qui ? :D huhu

but now it looks great.
I've forced a little the textures, to keep something a bit constrasted under the rain...

I`m a bit worried about the rein efect though. I have been playing around with some rain shots at work and it creates some really annoying noise in parts of the scene. I saw you had some of the same over the water in the back to on your earlier tests.
-> I will do other tests with rain... but later... I will wait to be more advancer in the scene !

Are you planning to have this finished by the ned of the week?
Hahahaha... no man... it remain much work to do !
my goal is to finish all modeling and texturing for christmas... but that will be very short finally...

If I don't make wallpaper before, it's certainly my way is a bit different than previous challenge... less time, more fast... and it remain against much elements to have, to really have the good vision of the scene... but anyway, it's very pleasant... I like that... to share this pictures

Now, it's certainly the last element I must add in the scene, before to start to work on animals and wagons...

...a Light House a bit special... a mix again of medieval tower and metallic parts...
...strange certainly... but that could fit well in the scene.

heh...when I started reading this thread it was 29 pages...
I really like how the mechanical parts have been thought through...very nice and creative boat. Only the amount of quit big lights on the boat seems excessive. If they had been small "local" lights rather than big light posts it would seem more reasonable to have so many...
Otherwise excellent work :-)

good compromise, and steampunk-styled

the only thing missing to me, is a real powerfull beam...more than the glow, you can probably simulate it with a spotlight, and a tube geometry, with some kind of ramp-based materials (volumetric are often simulated this way in videogame, often do the trick pretty well) :)

Here's the first test for the lighthouse...

Of course, to render more fast, I've leave the steamboat and the city street... just the lighthouse.

I try to add a lighting beam... I don't know how that work... with the mood and the rain, that appear not much visible... but in other hand, it's not a night scene and that beam maybe can't be a lot of visible... ?

and as you could see... I've changed a little bit the rain force... and direction.

Now... time for C&C ;-)

For the rain, looks good itself, but need more depth...Don't know how you did it, but i guess it's some postwork...Just maybe reduce its density by 3, but copy it 3 times and make 3 different size...with small, medium, and big drops, we should have a better "sensation" of depth ;)

Hello all...

the first animal made... a rabbit...
Why, don't know exaclty.

Of course, he's mechanical... not totally steampunk, but not easy for me to imagine a rabbit with chimneys.

Anyway, he's like a mechanic toy... with key... he will be animated, simply... as a toy, and as all other animals... if I could find enough time to do them all !

Lemog

Well... he's not much detailed, but even with more closer than view than the previos animation, all these details will be not much visible.
For me, its enough... just need to be textured !

A question comes now... I've 2 solutions... each animals must are in a wagon, or each animals are THE wagon... and this rabbit must have wheels !

I really like the second option... but the only problem in this case, is based on the Noah's story... to save the races, we must have couple of each ones...

Thanks to give me your opinion about this very important point ! ;-)

No sure, just depend to the total lenght... as that was not planed at the beginning, now, we must take a little time to see a little more precisely these animals...

:wavey:

Thanks for you comment, I don"t know if I have much courage but one thing is sure, I like the challenges... even if I have a another personnal project very big in the same time.
The rabbit textures will be simple.. metallic... and certainly procedural shader, as for the SteamBoat...

Yes you're right.
In first, I've planed to do 30 wagons with 30 couples of animals... but animals very simple, as metallic sheets, or as simple wood's toys... that was not totally decided...
...but now that's seem more clear... maybe I could do less animals, but each one as alone wagon... but the girls followed by the guy... 15 different animals x 2 !
Like that, I have my 30 wagons :banghead: hahaha

Morning Lolo,

Oh dear, looks like I've missed some important updates on Friday, time to catch up!:scream:
As you can imagine I'm very much intrigued by the idea of mechanic animals, though it comes a little surprising...but of course this is a less cruel solution and as the mechanical bunny already shows it's also a visual appealing solution:thumbsup: . So I'm totally following your idea and looking forward to see the next updates. And thanks a lot for the wallpaper, always a highlight!

Hope you had an interesting and successful weekend, and wish you a good start in your week full of challenges,

-sabrina

Very sweet, thanks. And glad to hear your weekend went well!

héhé... effectively, the quick visit in the catacombes was a very good moment :D

About Noah... nothing it's planed for the moment... I have many ideas, but also depend of the choice of the story's end...
...I keep him for the end :wise:

...late... but anyway... the rabbits are now textured.

As for the ship, only procedurals shaders... simple... metallic...

I will used similaries shaders for the other animals.

Next time, as I said, I must test wheels for them... to replace the first idea of wagons...

Even of the animals train follow the way... each will be animated as a mechanical toy... look the key ! ;-))

As you could see, there's a minor difference... where is the girl ;-)))

Well... now, I don't know what's next animal ?

...maybe a pig... funny, good size...

but if you have any good suggestions or ideas... my ears are largely open !

Nice day for you all...

Not so cuddly and soft maybe....:curious: But great humor there buddy.

It's my way... there's too much serious things in life... we're here to learn, to share... and to have FUN ! I hope it's the same thing for everyone...
...even if it's a challenge !

[/QUOTE]Maybe Noah should be made in the same way? :)
Not decided at 100%... but maybe I must have a contrast... and he could be the only real thing in the scene... then only human... and why not, as driver of the train !
Maybe to have a real steampunk locomotive drived by him will be a cool touch...

...a locomotive, a little based on the karting in Mario Kart ? of course... SteamPunked much :scream: hahahaha...
As I said... think fun !
