View Full Version : I don't usually do this but...Allan Mckay! Where are you?
davius 11-12-2008, 12:31 PM Hello Allan! Nice to meet you!
Sorry to bother you with a thread starting with your name, but I haven't had success sending you a PM (your inbox is full) or e-mails (to catastrophicFX). So, please, excuse me!
*aHem*...could you please check some of the tutorials in your site? I find some of them not playing here (although I have Divx and Techsmith installed), specially the famous "amckay_PRB.avi"... I was looking forward seeing that video! Could you re-upload them, if possible?
Thanks a bunch!

Have you tried getting something like k-lite codec pack? or watching them in another program? I'm pretty sure I've never had any problems with his tuts, but i probably did watch them about 2 years ago lol. If he doesn't see this ill tell him about it next time i talk to him.

Thanks JonathanFreisler! I tend not to install K-Lite codec packs (maybe it's me, but I'm afraid of Kazaa messing my PC...). Anyway it's strange, since I can watch most of Allan's videos but a few ones, including the "amckay_PRB.avi". I watched all of them a few years ago too and can't remember having any problems.
I'm really sorry to bother you and Allan about this, since maybe I can find this kind of information (particles rigid bodies) somewhere else, but I really like the way Allan explains these things! And everyone I asked about particle flow and reactor pointed me to Allan's site so you see - he's kind of a reference to these things :P

Get VLC, eats any codec.

Did you try VLC with the "Psuedo Particle Rigids" video found here (http://www.allanmckay.com/tutorials.html), scrimski? Sorry to ask but I tried that before and it didn't work here. If you get it to play then maybe there's something wrong with my system  ?
BTW, thanks for stoping by scrimski!

k-lite codec pack has nothing to do with kazaa. google it, its basically a codec pack with hundreds of codecs you will ever need. Just to cover all bases.

hey guys, most of my tuts are using the camtasia/techsmith codec for video, and the audio is the mp3 lame codec, I think winamp installs it but you can get it separately. Is it the audio or the video that isnt working?
I guess when I get time I will go back in and change them all to SWF or something that is universally supported, I know back in the day when I made them 200mb was pretty big back then!
I'll also try and do some new fume and particle tuts sometime, just been crazy busy with work
let me know if you're still having problems with the lame codec

Thanks for clarifying that JonathanFreisler! And Allan, sorry to call your attention like that! And regarding the problem, it's both the audio and video in the PRB video, and the video only on others (like the particles_101 video).
I'll try the VLC and the k-lite, in that order, to see if I have any luck.
Cheers!

Edit - VLC was no good... Nice player btw !Thanks scrimski!
Gonna try the codecs... and latter on a different PC, just for the sake of it!

I remember having the same problem with the same video file in VLC, MPC, whatever, nothing worked with it.

Just tried with the k-lite and nothing changed, still can't watch the videos - I've downloaded and re-downloaded them 3 times now. Gonna download one more time just to make sure the file is clean and complete (not using any kind of download manager, only Opera browser :buttrock: ).
Maybe the file got corrupted, somehow?

did u install the TSCC codec?

if you have access to another computer just try and watch it on that. :S

I'm actually getting the same issue (and i'm trying to redownload now).
Moreso, when I right click the file in explorer and go to it's properties it just says 'the properties of this file are unavailable' - or something to that effect. I've only seen that on corrupted files in the past. I get a full property sheet on the other tutorials i've downloaded from Alan's (incredibly awesome) site :)

Camtasia offers a free standalone player, try it.

I do remeber having trobvle with TCSS videos and VLC under XP but since I'm mostly on OS X and Linux nowadays I can't remeber a valid solution anymore.

@ dementol - Yes... I've downloaded and installed the latest TSCC codec.
@ JonathanFreisler - Just did that and still can't watch the video.
@ cboath
(...) when I right click the file in explorer and go to it's properties it just says 'the properties of this file are unavailable' - or something to that effect. (...)
Hum... Just tried and that happens here also - I can't see the file properties.
@ scrimski - Gonna try that now! Thanks for the tip!
On a side note - did anyone here recently downloaded the video and is able to watch it? In which player?
Thanks for your efforts guys!

Thanks Allan! I really appreciate you replying to this topic! Please, tell us when you have the videos re-encoded! I'm salivating to learn about the PRB thing!
P.S.: Did anyone here recently downloaded the video and is able to watch it? In which player/codec?

Tried it.
Says that 'the file cannot be read indicating a corrupt file or unrecognized format'...I have all the codecs from k-lite to TSCC.

I usually record in techsmith and lame mp3 (I think comes with winamp) so most of the time its pretty straight forward

anyway I will convert them to quicktime sometime, but prolly not for a bit, I'm on the road for the next few weeks doh!

I've just tried to watch some videos today and the small ones played just fine, but the tut_ObjAB.avi always come corrupted, it's a 126.1MB file and here the download said it finished around 50MB, maybe is some problem with the host.

Hi,
got the same problems a few weeks ago. but I solved it with the windows media player... ;) Vlc doesn't work. Just brings some strange flickering. It was a blanc system with tscc vlc and all windows updates... nothing more...
Hope this helps...

I'll be doing a relaunch in the first quarter of the year, all new content, new material, new stuff, all high quality and most likely quicktimes or flash so that should resolve some issues ;)
Those videos are quite old now, however I havent had much time to sleep or breathe in the last couple of years so its been difficult to chase a lot of it up

Don't worry Allan! As I said earlier, take your time, my friend! Enjoy this holiday season and REST! I (and a LOT of people) will wait 'till you re-launch the videos. I'm already grateful for the time you'll take just to help some guys around this forum! Thanks Allan! And Merry Christmas!

The lame codec is one of the best free encoders on the internet.

Hopefully flash instead of Quicktime. Trying to watch Quicktimes through the browser on XP64 means you lose the timeline controls. Since Apple apparently has no idea of what 64bit is or how to fix the 64 bit os issue on windows platforms.

Thanks tobyatwork! Lame is indeed a very nice (and handy) codec!
Hey jimmy4d! Do you have the videos? Can you make sure they play nice and easy in your PC? If so this may confirm 3DMadness observations and the videos got corrupted somehow.
About hosting them, you should ask Allan if it's OK. I feel I bothered him too much already about these videos - shame on me

Yeah it's just stupid. But it's a good way to learn how to use the quicktime timebar blind!
Shame on you Apple. I use XP 64-bit, does anyone know if it works in Vista 64-bit.
btw. same goes for Itunes. Really slow and buggy under XP 64-bit . When are people going to make programs for professional systems.
also... No pen pressure in Photoshop CS3 if you have a wacom. (there goes the reason I bought the damn thing.)
sorry I won't go on. Although I can..........

I have vista 64-bit and I can't really say I have experienced any problems with itunes compared to using it on XP 32-bit.
I do have the black timebar on Quicktime videos in the browser, but that's a minor problem as far as I'm concerned. It's not like it's hard to memorize where stuff is down there.
I also have pen pressure in PS CS3. Actually the only problem I've experienced by switching from XP 32-bit to Vista 64-bit is the Quicktime timeslider issue.
Also as far as I know OSX has been 64-bit for a long time as well as many apple applications so I don't see how they can not know what 64-bit is.

Hey everybody keeps telling me to stay away from vista 64, I just went to xp64 but I'm having driver issues with some hardware that I have to have, vista 64 has all my drivers and now I'm hearing a lot of companys are just bypassing xp64 and going to vista with there new drivers..........with that said I will be doing the swtch this weekend.....any input on that.
davius.I thinks its ok with allen but I will see first I guess.......hey Allen can you hear me......(only way to get a hold of him):D

It's not that Apple has no experience with 64-bit. There just focusing there research on vista and not on the old xp 64-bit.
