Hey peeps,
I saw the "Steampunk" contest and love what some steampunk artist are doing these days. This will be my first contest on CGTalk and I'm going to get to work researching into what I want to "do" exactly. Till then, best of luck to everyone else in the contest. Let's all create some amazing eye candy.

More to come....

alright, So I narrowed it down to The Tower of Babel OR the story of Pygamilion. I'm currently working on some compositional thumbnails of both of those ideas to see which one will end up the strongest. I'll get them up here today.

Nothing more grand than paintings of the Tower of Babel. One of many inspirations to do this story with "Steampunk" aesthetic.

I jotted down some rough drawings in my sketchbook. Here is One of 3 with some quick shadowing and highlights added. I didn't spend too much time on it because I'm going to work on other possible angles this weekend:

My overall goal is to get the sense of scale. I've been looking at pictures of the worlds tallest building called the "Burj" in Dubai and I like the sense of vertigo when looking at pictures from the top of the structure. It'll be a challenge to pull off but it's all about pushing the boundaries personally. I'll get some more stuff up on Monday hopefully. Have a good weekend peeps, I'm liking what I've been seeing on the forums thus far.

I tried some colors on the first concept. Not sure if I'm liking it thus far. Seems a bit over crowded on the left side. I'm going to try a different approach to even it out or get a better shot of the massiveness of the tower. Crits or suggestions welcome.

Hey Mike,
Excellent concept, and a very clear concept sketch. I say go for the tower of Babel.
Best of luck,

hey Mike!
the concept is really cool, and the sketch is cool too. if you think is to crowded on a side you could fix the composition with the lights adding some shadows and building a composition of dark/white.
Cheers , and waiting for updates :scream:

Nice concept. The angle is perfect, as it totally transmits a sense of "scale". Look forward to seeing this evolve. Good luck.

What a great idea - I like the approach.

I'd disagree a little on the 'scale' issue, though - I think you could push the epic-ness of the scene a lot more. Your inspirational image has a sense of immense size and distance that I don't think you've quite captured with your sketch.

Looking forward to seeing how this develops.

Fabulous idea, I love the tower imagery. I agree with the post above mine, about pushing the epic factor up a bit. Perhaps adding more of a wide angle look, which would make it more dizzying with its perspective, would help this, or perhaps distancing the foreground a bit more from the tower itself, as in the painting you posted.

I'm looking forward to seeing how this one progresses, as I do rather love steampunk tower structures.

It looks incredible so far. If you add a bit of the spiral/screw element of the orriginal tower to your tower it will help unite your reinvisioning of the tower of babel with the historic tower. The spiral is perhaps the most identifieably feature.

Hi

I am really looking forward to see your final painting. I think your sketch might have a small tendency to get "flat". If you see the town from above, you could perhaps experiment with the persepctive. I think that would apply more depth to the picture. But you have a very nice way of drawing so no doubt it will turn out well.

I am looking forward to see more

I've scribbled some stuff down real quick. I'm liking how this version is coming out. I plan on showing some circus style tents, Neo-Victorian buildings but keeping the shapes simple so the main focus is on the Tower of Babel. I'm thinking about running steam pipes toward the tower and help lead the eye to the center of the page but will try that out on the next pass. Just thought I'd upload this image to show a starting base of gray scale before I start digging in and refining possibly.

I made some changes to the foreground to really give off that your surrounded by a Steampunk community. I just watched "The Mysterious Exploration Of Jasper Morello" Great film that inspired some more ideas toward this piece. Looking forward to working on tower and adding some pistons, gears and working mechanisms to make the tower a complete working mass.

i think it might need a bit more height (that we can see of the tower)
to make it more towerish...looks like a high building at the moment...

i love the stuff you added reminded me of the crystal palace http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Crystal_Palace another one (http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/80/CrystalPalaceEngraving.jpg&imgrefurl=http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:CrystalPalaceEngraving.jpg&usg=__NMg3SJwk_MWo4_8V08ciP6wV9Kw=&h=778&w=1198&sz=408&hl=en&start=20&sig2=P7vnPqUlc6j97j_bsL3dtg&um=1&tbnid=yLWgUcf-bqPAuM:&tbnh=97&tbnw=150&ei=JH8kSf-6Mo628ATG7p0I&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dcrystal%2Bpalace%26imgsz%3Dxxlarge%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-US:official%26sa%3DN) and another (http://www.sil.si.edu/PAID/fullsize/1991/91-19674.jpg) and one more (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/70/Crystal.Palace.Paxton.Plan.jpg) hopefully these work, if not just google it, love that little blimp, what about a crane that arches out and has different flying machines docked to it, or maybe it draws up supplies. also what about in the background having something that is of the style when babel came out like a ziggurat of ur (http://editorial.cda.ulpgc.es/construccion/1_historia/11_prerromano/fotos/Figura%2006%20Ziggurat02%20Ur%20color.jpg) or something like that, like its what has been and now what is, or make it a cityscape maybe, industral depending if you want it to be all steam and smoke stacks and crazyness or cleaner, maybe a wall or bridges over a river or dual rivers depending

maybe the building in the front is a church and its the last outpost of goodness before the tower of babel that lies beyond.

also what about roman velarium (http://www.the-colosseum.net/architecture/novavelarium.htm) on some of the levels just like they had on teh coliseum. sails petruding out giving shade to the level below.
just some ideas,

keep at it man its good stuff

Nice idea, all I would say is that you have lost some of the scale that is so clear in the earlier concepts. Maybe push the tower further away from the camera so that is is in the distance and you get to see the full height - or extend your canvas up? It's coming on nicely though, great design.

I worked a bit more on the top of the tower. I adjusted my canvas size so you could get a better sense of height. Not sure if it's working though but still a lot more to do. I need to solidify the foreground elements, figure out what I'm going to do with zeppelins and start getting some ideas for color. I'll work on this over the weekend and hopefully get something posted on Monday. Take it easy

As you see, I'm more favoring the classic browns and oranges to give that older kind of look. I had to add to try the night scene. More palettes might busted out tomorrow but I want to start painting color sometime soon. What do you all think is the strongest? I'm kinda leaning toward #1. If there isn't any.. what might look better? It's far from done but I don't want to take too long on the gray scale version. Thanks for stopping in. These entries I've been seeing look rather awesome and we still have a month and a half to go !!!

Amirgdx5- I appreciate your response. I'm going to mull it over today and pick one by tonight most likely.

MartinNielsen
11-24-2008, 02:28 PM
No.2 looks very good, because of the color contrast.

scho81
11-24-2008, 02:59 PM
MartinNielsen-The more I look at these, the more I realize that all the others besides number two are definitely lacking contrast. I'm going to work with 1 and 2. I might put some more yellows into #1 to see if that helps any. Darkening the clouds could also help a bit too. Number to works but I'm trying to stay away from what my Inspirational piece has done. Decisions..decisions. Thanks for your comment and opinion on the matter. I really appreciate it !

RicoD
11-24-2008, 09:52 PM
No 2 has my vote as well. The others are too monotonic in comparison. The first could indeed work well with something to offset the orange / brown tones. I'd still opt for a blueish shade though ...;)

kashivan

1 & 2 "Tower of Babel"

cool colors! :applause:

scho81
11-24-2008, 10:46 PM
JackZhang- Yeah.. I might go with that idea. My gut is telling me to do something else with the composition too. I'll work on it tonight to see if it eases my gut.

RicoD- Thanks! I agree with the Monotonic statement. I appreciate your opinion. If I were to pick #1. I could up the yellow lights (complimentary to the purple/grey clouds ) or turn them green. The green might make it look a little creepy though.

kashivan- Thank you ! I appreciate your input as well. at least it narrows out 3 and 4 now. I'll work on it tonight like I told Jack Zhang and see how I feel tomorrow.

Thank you guys for helping me out with my decision. It's great to get other artists opinions on these sort of things. I had a comment from a friend of mine today who said: "Take what you're comfortable with and times it by 3 or 4." Who knows what I might do. Till then... Keep crankin' on the challenge.

Working on adding lights and color. I'm really trying to get that contrast and atmospheric effect without losing all the detail. I need to add something to the scene to give the huge tower something to relate to. I moved the zeppelin that was on the right side a bit closer to the viewer. I might put steampunk skyscrapers in front of the tower to see if that helps. I might just ditch it and start over if that doesn't work. Take it easy folks.

AndreiSzasz,Kinanh & RupertD - Thanks so much for the support. This thing was stressing me out yesterday. I'll continue on hammering this baby out. I'm sure in the long run the town in the foreground will get better as I refine. As long as I can keep in my head the ultimate goal is sense of scale while keeping that steampunk aesthetic I think I'll be fine. Thanks again for the words of encouragement.

scho81
12-02-2008, 08:26 PM
paratrooper- Yeah.. it was a toss up between the blue or choice 1 for the color palette. Were you talking about my very first rendition of the tower or the second with the different color choices? I'm still trying to add some obvious steampunk elements that will hopefully give it a little more life and style cues. Thanks so much for your input. I'll take some of my favorite parts of that first concept and make sure I put them in the finished piece.. Especially the steam whistles ..and possible flying plane swooping throug the air. it's hard to get those details in a tower so far back. :)

Loving the idea and the realisation. One thing though, everything feels quite squashed into the picture plane. Perhaps altering the aspect ratio of the image could allow for more creative liberties to be taken?

Sardinha- Hey Rick, Thanks for the comment man. My ultimate goal is that it reads well and that it's instantly recognizable. I'm having a blast working on it.

DoomedSeraph- You are thinking what I was thinking on the first comment. I appreciate the idea to make this even better and your comment about keeping an eye on it. I could always use some critiques. On your second perspective, I never really thought about it in that context. I had some buddies at work help me out with some ideas. The Tower of Babel, Pygmalion and Baba Yaga were brought up for some interesting pieces. I'm a little more comfortable doing landscapes and was inspired by the "inspirational" art that I found while researching the subject. I thought it be a great idea to illustrate.

AUMAKUA- Thank you so much for subscribing! I hope I can put it in my "Epic" category. That's an awfully huge feat. Thanks for tuning in

Smash.rs- Thanks! I have a lot more to go and the days are counting down. It really dawned on me when I put the file to the "preferred" image size.. It's a lot of detail and work. I wish you the best of luck as well.

It's been a couple days. Work has been hectic and I haven't had the chance to work on it much. I put some more width in the canvas to open it up a little bit and worked on some details. Slowly getting there. I feel as if the tower has a slight curve more on the right side so I'm going to fix that as well. Thanks for stopping in people.. I appreciate it.

Haven't been on here in awhile. Sorry about that. I've been staring at the work I've done thus far and It just wasn't screaming.. "huge".. "epic!!" so I did a speed paint over my image to see if I could get a better sense of scale. I like the blue and orange color scheme but I'm now thinking about making the bottom part of the piece real gritty and having toward the top near the heavens..pristine. Let me know what you guy's think. Does it read better then my previous post?

Thanks Martin, I would agree to your statement the more I look at it. It seems like I'm lost in Candy Land or something. Alrighty.. so I wiped away some of those foreground elements getting a little too much glory. I wanted to see if I could frame up the foreground a little so I'm back to the balloon, or zeppelin on the left side of the image. ...and definitely back to blue/orange color palette. The clouds are bugging me badly so next up is figuring those out.

iDrift- I appreciate it man... I'm keeping at it. I look back and think that I should have built some simple box buildings in 3d real quick... I guess it's all a learning process.

Started thinking that putting a city sort of grid to show the scale of this tower could help a lot and add a cool element. More to come

Man! ..
I just saw the "Reaching Out" image by Soenke Maeter on CGSociety. Really great execution of composition.

I found some references and hinted at city lights in the background. I did some tweaking to the clouds as well. I'll be pushing double time on this since the holidays are coming up soon. Let me know what's working and what's not.

I need to figure out what I'm going to do with this zeppelin in the foreground and figure how the pulleys are going to work. i added some bounce light to the clouds due to the light of the city. I'll be working hard after the holidays to finish this thing up. Have a good Holiday peeps. Feel free to critique what I have. I'm still not sure about what I have for this Zeppelin on the left foreground of the image. Thanks !

Well,
I'm back from the holidays and worked on it a little bit today at work. Not enough to go posting what I did though. Hope everyone had a great holiday. I have tomorrow off for New Year's and need to get this bad boy rolling again. Time is winding down quickly.

Man oh man do I need to get cracking on the Final Submission!! I just wanted to ask all of you out there that are looking at the "close to near done" entries.. Is there anything on there that is sticking out like a sore thumb? .. anything that might need changing before I do the last final clean up stages?

Thanks peeps

I think everyone is super excited about this week extension on the image category. This will give me a couple days of critique fixes..(insert critiques here) .. :D

see you guys in a couple days.

All of these final submissions are looking wicked. Nice work everyone.

My critique would be to bring the POV down lower so the tower seems more imposing. I don't know if that is possible this late in the game but for something so epic, the shot seems weirdly static.

Perhaps bring the upper right airship closer to the camera, or show more of the foreground?

EDIT: The image on page 5 works a little better for me for some reason.

Good work. If you can find the time, you could extend the left canvas, so we can see more of the foreground elements. That way you have a more dynamic composition, with the tower a bit to the right.

madshooter- Thanks man. I'm glad you're liking the color choice. I might adjust some levels before the contest is over but for the most part, I think the colors were the right choice.
greyother- Thank you for taking your time to look through my other progress/w.i.p shots. I agree with the "wierdly static" comment. I appreciate the suggestions about lowering the POV's to make the tower a little more grand. That will work a lot better I think. Thank God I have all my layers seperated.
Loly-Really? .. I've always wanted to achieve that 3d aspect from just 2d painting without blocking in shapes. I might use simple staged shapes next time. I learned a lot this competition and will probably save a lot of time doing that. Best of luck to you too.
MartinNielsen-I think extending the canvas off to the left will work well. The next time I have that gut feeling to change the center composition, I'll make the decision earier.. lol. Waiting till the last minute isn't the way to go! I really think that will help the dynamics of it greatly though. Thanks for your input man. I greatly appreciate it. Best of luck to you too. I'm loving your progress

-- Alrighty!! I'm off to fix some of these issues. Looking forward the ending stretch. See you guys in a couple days with some of the changes.

I did a couple things. Resized the canvas to get rid of the center composition. and lowered the POV on the right side to help put emphasis on the epic tower. I'm going to sit down tonight and design the POV in the foreground. I might change it up all together.

MartinNielsen- I think it helped greatly!! Thanks for the tip. I really do appreciate it. It's not "as" static anymore. I'll have to work on that part for the next challenge.

Well,
I'll tell you one major thing I've learned from my first CGSociety challenge..Make sure you read the extension deadline carefully. I could have sworn it said deadline by the end of the 19th. Needless to say, 12 pm GMT = 7:00 pm EST. I hope they look at the final image and not my W.I.P that I submitted after that.

Best of luck to everyone that made it to the end !! Congrats on all the sweet image entries. They are truly extraordinary.

Nice use of colors on this one. The sky deep blue transitions into a heavenly white glow to the top... brilliant:) I like how this makes the viewer wonder how the city architeture would look like close up.Too late for ideas i know, but a stronger foreground element would have been nice. Regardless, Well done!

Whoa, i wish your final image went through!

The best part is that you've created an awesome piece. Besides they use to say that: "Every canvass has it's own journey"

scho81

mrpeace- I appreciate it man. I definitely underestimated how much it would take to fill up the whole tower with working mechanisms. I could've easily spent 3 months painting gears and pistons.. haha

cabertevon-Thanks for the compliments. I submitted a final piece but after the news of an extension, I submitted another W.I.P piece. Some people gave me some great feedback and I extended out the left side of the canvas, lowered one of the zeppelins and started refining the foreground piece. Needless to say I never got far after that. I hope they still look at my final I submitted before that. If not, ... lesson learned. :D
