This comp couldnt have come at a better time! Ive been itching for some personal work, and have had an idea rattling around my head for quite some time...and here is a perfect excuse for it.

In the previous challenge, I bit off to much in the beginning, and ended up with a handful of shots that weren't nearly as polished or complete as I would have liked. For this challenge, I am going to focus on MUCH fewer shots, and definitely try to up the quality. I learned so much in the previous challenge, so Im looking forward to getting dirty with this one!

My short will focus around a character I have had in my mind for a very long time...Charon, the ferry-master. He carries the souls of the dead across the river Styx, and into Hades. Now something that I have always loved about Charon, and the entire concept of Hades, was that it was believed to be an actual place...there is a river Styx that weaves in and out of massive underground cave systems and mountains.
Charon is a usually overlooked character in Mythology, although I think he is one of the more interesting dudes. To have the responsibility of carrying souls to the other side...whats NOT cool about that?

Im going to be doing some sketches and such, aswell as some storyboarding tonight. I want to try and incorporate some live action plates here, but more along the lines of miniature work. Cant hurt? ;)

Good luck to all!

Messing around with some ideas for Charon. I want him to be a skeleton (cos they rock), but definitely dress him up. He has been down in the caves for centuries, and his clothes are ragged and torn.
I like the idea of his jaw being missing...so he covers it up with a scarf.

Oh ho ho....very cool :D and kinda creepy!

Pyke

Next up is the gates of hell....If we follow the mythos around Charon and Hades, and the fact that it was believed to be an actual place, I imagine that it would 'evolve' technologically along the same lines as the world around it. Seeing as the this is a steampunk challenge, the gates of hell are definitely going to be..well...steampunk'd up! Huge cogs that open massive doors into hades...all steam driven, using huge bags of gas, and hydro electric power from the river Styx.

For Charons boat, I want it to be steam driven (obviously), but still be directed by hand, with a long oar mounted to the rear.

In my 'universe', the souls that Charon is transporting are 'captured' in what appears to be gas lamps, filled with glowing gaseous forms...

Damn...I gotta go do some drawing!

Nice and sharp sketch. Will be watching how the animation will come up.

Is cerberus in this myth? At the doors of hell?

Some more sketches...

Fleshing out (ha!) Charon...Im trying to figure out how much if him should be skeleton, and how much clothing. Ive got a few ideas in terms of wardrobe, so will carry on sketching until I find something that really appeals to me.
The dude next to him is one of the gaurds at the doors of Hades. Wanna have him be a literal opposite to Charon, with his eye's covered and only his mouth showing.

And finally! The door to Hades. I was thinking of a huge boiler...with metal pieces extending all the way up the sides of the caves. Definite strong verticle lines.
The actual door I envision as a huge 'vault' door, which is essentially an extremely complex lock-designed to both keep people in, AND out.

ivanisavich
11-16-2008, 02:08 PM
That's extremely cool man! I love all the pipes leading down to the door...would be cool if they essentially just extended off into the darkness on the infinitely-huge wall that the door is in. And the complex lock is cool too. I imagine a whole bunch of collossal gears and pistons (like, the size of tall buildings) all rotating and moving slowly into place, just to open the moderately-tiny door at the bottom. As if...."the gods" designed the door to keep in/out some of the more powerful beings in the universe, so the locking mechanism is the largest and most complex device ever created.

Modeling and texturing. I replaced the scarf with something a little more 'tunic' like...something more permanent, that can be made of leather. Basically trying to get a bit more steampunk into him.

I'm still trying to figure out something for his body. The problem I've found is that because he is a skeleton, its very difficult to have him wear clothes, cos there is no place for the clothes to attach to. Bones stick out at odd angles..you cant wrap a belt around his hips, cos there are only like 3 points of contact with the bones..so it'll look like the belt is magically floating there.

I'm thinking of some sort of high 'corset' around his waist and up to the base of his ribcage....something similar to what Altair has in Assassins Creed. Can also add in some nice detail there...edging and such.

Any comments and suggestions are always welcome and encouraged!

Pyke
11-17-2008, 06:06 AM
Tyson, you summed up my thoughts on the lock exactly! I was actually thinking that when the lock opens, one or two of the pieces that extend upwards would be pulled...almost as though something high up in the caves is pulling it up, releasing the latches below.

Fantastic topic Pyke. Charon is my favourite Mythological Character. Death and underworld are so often seen as "dark" and "evil", when in fact Death is 100% neutral. It is the perfect balance to life, and Charon could not be a more Neutral Character in this respect. The living toil and the dead seek rest, but Charon is simply the Vessel that links the two.

I like your Character concepts a lot, however in my mind I find it hard to picture those Characters in a steampunk environment. Perhaps you could give your Charon some sort of Mechanical spine, with the rest of him all bone and cloth. Just an idea.

On a side note my wife has a masters in forensics anthropology specialising in human remains. We have a TON of reference material on skeletons at home. I'd be happy to provide you with anything you like. Just send me a PM and I'll get her to dig up whatever you ask for then send it to you.

Keep us updated! I think this thread will become really exciting really fast.

Ive been trying to figure out his clothing before adding on the extra details (belts, buckles, details, etc).

I think Ive got a good balance of skeleton to clothing ratio here, so can start adding in the needed details, weathering the clothes, etc.
Also, there is some major stretching happening on the bones, so they need to be mapped properly. Still a lot to do, but I suppose thats why its called a WIP Challenge!

Pyke
11-19-2008, 11:37 AM
ivanisavich,

Thanks man. Yeah-there is some horrid stretching on top of the skull! It needs some creative unwrapping, or something that I was considering was giving him hair...long thin strands of white hair...It may be to much, but I think its definitely something that I want to experiment with.

ludicrous,

I saw your WIP thread....some really nice ideas there!

Jhaeffner

You and me both mate! Still so much to do and plan!

RageOfAges

Thanks so much for visiting my thread and taking the time to comment. Ive always loved Charon aswell.
I was really considering adding some metal to his skeleton, but I worry that it will come across as 'steampunk for the sake of steampunk'. I really want it to appear as tho the rest of the world carried on evolving technologically, and the denizens of the underworld just went along with it-but that they are still 'who they are'. Basically that they use the technology provided for them, but it doesn't change them. Perhaps some brass plates or pins the mend broken bones tho?

Thanks so much for the offer of the reference! My copy of Anatomy For The Artist has been well used here, and is looking rather tired. I will definitely take up your offer if I get stuck! Its an old copy, and I have a tendency to really USE books (draw in them, trace things out, even tear out some pages...much to everyones horror!)

Next update will showcase much more of the 'steampunk' feel I'm going to be adding. Thanks again everyone for checking out my thread. :D

Your Charon is looking great man. I can tell you're having difficulty figuring out how to attach the cloth to the form, though lol.
I see where you're coming from about the technology evolving while the "denizens" remain the same. Much like humans today.
Reminds me of JP from gramma's boy. "I'm only human...but I'm working on that!".

Starting work on the ferry. I think that the steam powered engines may be a little to 'imposing', so Ill probably make them a little smaller, or even only have one engine.

Also gotta rig all the pistons and stuff, which is going to be fun!

I really wanna age it a lot as well. Broken planks of wood, perhaps some missing pieces on the engines...I even thought of having one engine working and the other one kinda dead, or just turning at half the speed of the other.

Very nice modeling, the steam boilers don't seem to big considering the size of the wheel, need lots of pressure to make those turn :)

Brilliant Pyke. I assume that long stick is some kind of oar? rotating down, then sliding up as it hits the bottom to push the ferry along? It's a very cool design. It would be cool to see the back end swoop up to a point high above with a lantern hanging down, to keep in the mood of the original myth. Can't wait to see more!

Thanks so much for all the replies. Ive been hard at work on the previz, which I'm uploading now. We are closing offices on the 19'th, but we should be pretty quiet from the 12th onwards, so Ill be able to get quite a bit done.

Here is Act 1's previz....Act 2 and 3 will follow as soon as inspiration for exciting camera angles and such hits me! And work lets up a little... :D

Hey man, really nice stuff!

Things I liked:
-great atmosphere, wonderful sound design
-great sense of scale, loved some of the establishing shots of the environment (even though I realize it's all temp)
-nice cinematography

Things I thought would be nice to see:
-bit more of charon in the beginning....maybe him picking up the soul-cages and putting them on the ship or something
-bit more light in some of the areas. I like the atmosphere, but sometimes it was just difficult to make out what was going on....maybe if sharon has a torch or there is a brighter spotlight coming from somewhere to illuminate the areas around him, that would help to distinguish the foreground from the background a bit better...almost as if he's near a small beacon of light in an infinite expanse of darkness filled with monstrous machines churning in the shadows.

Just minor critiques though...you're off to a great start!

Pyke

RageOfAges,

You and me both man! :D

Hey Tyson,

Thanks for the crit. Exactly the type of feedback I was hoping for!

I agree with seeing more of him in the begining. I even thought of extending the first few shots where you see his collection of items from people...the reason that was in there was to illustrate how lonely he is-and how he longs for contact from 'humans'...I dont think that was really clear tho, so perhaps needs more explaining.

I love the name Soul Cages btw. :D Im going to add in a shot with him taking them to the ferry. I also thought of changing all the torches to electric light bulbs (or some variation of electric light bulbs...) to get a little more steam-punk tech into it. But also to have him walking down a path to the ferry dock, and as he passes the lights with the soul cages, they begin to get brighter as he passes them..almost as if the souls are feeding energy into the lights.
This could also contract nicely with having the gates of hades lit by traditional torches.

I agree that there are some places where it is a little to dark. I think I just got to excited with my contrast and colour correction. :D I think having him hold a lamp will definitely fix it up, as well as casting some very cool shadows across his face. Also I want to increase the ambient light about 15% or so in general. Ive been watching The Lord Of The Rings, and noticed that even when they are supposed to be in complete darkness (the halls of the dead, or in Moria), you can still pick out the details around them. I definitely want to try and get that feel.

To get my mind out of the previz, Ive moved onto modeling and texturing the props...
Also nailing down the look of the technology. I want it to look old, yet looked after. I mean, if your only purpose in life was to operate a ferry, no matter how old it was, you would make sure that its in 100% operating order.

Here is the final iteration of the Ferry. Ive changed it since doing the pre-viz, to fit with some better camera angles and such.

The Beauty render was done just to get an idea about how much will be seen in the final shots...quite a bit of it will be in darkness, but I definitely wanna be able to see some detail.

Love the work on the boat. The covering into darkness is a logical step though there is little light at sea. But maybe it could be a good suggestion to investigate some interesting back lighting to get some accents here and there. I definitely agree about the rim lighting. In my story, he is in a large cave system, so Im planning on having some area's where light is streaming through cracks from the outside world, aswell as some sections perhaps having some sort of bio-luminescent qualities..almost like bacteria in the water....

Wow man very cool!!! Love the atmosphere and composition of the shots!

Only comment is that Charon's walking needs a lot of work...looks like it's entirely linear keys right now, although I can only assume when you mentioned "tweaks", that's one of the things you were referring to.

Great stuff!

Hey guys,

Thanks so much for the prompt replies! Yeah-his animation needs A LOT of work and tweaking. I'm still VERY new to character animation, so I'm learning as I go along. I must admit its quite fun, and quite addictive!

Ill carry on with his motions, trying to get the 'stiffness' out of them. Its very difficult on the more subtle movements to make them look fluid, set subtle. I must admit, animators are just incredible, and my hat goes off to you guys!

I really love what you did so far. I really love the style of the shots. Some are very dark and really fit in the whole.
I can't really see from the shots how the scene is built up, and if it's even possible to add more detail (it could be there is much getting lost), but i found a little helpful way to crank up some detail.

I think it could be helpfull in some shots, but i doubt it even is much needed. Since you have very dark environments with bright lights, you could use the fresnel reflection to your benefit. With a high reflection at the sides (when the normal points away to about 90 from the camera) you get a kind of backlighting. I think it could be very helpful for the shots inside the cave to bring out the rocks some more.

But besides that it already looks very nice.
Can't wait to see this in motion.

cheers and happy new year

Nothingness, Thanks for the crit and help on the lighting. In the more close shots of Charon, where he is in the cave systems, Im doing exactly what you said, really trying to boost up the rim lighting.

Gitch, Thiago-Pires, and artistcg,
Thanks for stopping by my thread and offering those words of encouragement. Its these comments that keep my nose to the grindstone!

visionmaster2,
Animation is really my weak link in the entire pipeline-and is definitely the thing that needs the most work! Im hoping that the audience will forgive my weak animation tho for the (I think) cool story, and decent lighting and cinematography. :D

Thanks again for checking out my thread guys! More to come soon!

I asked Chris Haigh to do the soundtrack for me, and he agreed! I just hope that the visuals will compliment his amazing sounds! Check out his (newly designed) website at http://cphproductions.co.uk/ and give his stuff a listen. Some seriously killer music there!

I was really inspired by the 2D feel of Prince Of Persia, particularly the menu systems, and really tried to get that feel across here-only a little less 'light'.

Hey guys. Thanks for all the comments!

LinchpinZA-Thanks man. Yeah-i actually found all those files in a backup the other day. I should revisit that project some time-hopefully this time with better results! You working in the 3d field now?

musi-Ill definitely update some new video as soon as possible. Ill admit, right now I'm just stressing to get the files out the door!

Lemog-Thanks man. Your work is insane, so thats a huge compliment! There are definitely some areas that need work-but I'm generally happy with how its turning out!

I just heard the intro score that Chris did...and I just have to say WOW! I cant wait to see (and hear!) it all come together!

My PC is a little screwed right now, so I'm loosing out on rendering time! But it should all be sorted by this evening (I hope!)

Pyke
01-22-2009, 05:57 AM
BUZZFX, Thanks so much. I run an archviz company, so we cant be to experimental with the lighting-so when I get the opportunity, I really enjoy playing around!

Its all done in MAX, from modeling, to texturing, to lighting. I built my own rig using MAX's bones and such..no puppetshop or CAT or Biped. Its very much my first dip into any sort of rigging and animation, and I have learned a massive amount!

andreasng, Thanks very much!

I have an entire reason behind my colour palettes, using oranges for safety, greens for loneliness, and blues for intimacy....there is also an entire play on traveling from light into dark, and then after an event (no spoilers!), from dark into light.

There is one scene of (I'm hoping) sadness and shock, where Ive actually mixed all the colour pallet's into the scene. I'm hoping that it conveys a mix of emotion.
I know this all sounds convoluted, but as there is only a few minutes to get a story across, I'm trying to use EVERYTHING at my disposal-and even if it works only partially at a subliminal level, Ill be a very happy person!

Hey Pyke,

Glad to see an update :)

The visuals in the trailer are really cool, but the sound is .....:eek:/:sad:

First off....watch your levels. Had to put my volume at 20% just to prevent my ears from being blown out. Also, it would be nice if you added some ambient noise in the background to link all the hero-sounds together. Right now it's kinda like: [sound effect]...[pause]...[sound effect]...[pause]...etc. Adding that background ambience would help tie the sounds together so the audio isn't so disjointed. Also, the last sound effect when the title came up was a bit weird....didn't really "read" well with me since I wasn't sure what it was supposed to be. Maybe something like a gong being hit deep within the earth, or an echoey voice coming out of a deep cavern, or cinders crackling would be better. Right now it sounds like a motorcycle ;)

Pyke
01-29-2009, 01:58 PM
Hey Tyson,

Thanks for the crit man. Ill pull the sound levels WAAAAAAAAAAAAY down.
I agree about the ambient 'white' noise in the background. I have a few really nice ones (ripped from Star Trek ELITE FORCES...that games sounds are just awesome!), that ill pop in the background.
The last sound is supposed to be a growl....but I see what you mean. With a visual cue to accompany it, it doesn't really have any 'body' to link it to. I think I know the perfect sound to replace it....

Pyke
01-30-2009, 08:11 AM
Ha! For some reason I had the finish date marked as the 5'th in my diary.....now i see its the 3rd!

Little update, act 1 and 2 are 100% complete. Act 3 is 100% complete as far the edit, and sound mix (excluding music) are concerned, and about 70% complete with the rendering. The actual compositing is pretty quick to do (all the files are already setup), so its just a case of waiting for the renders to be done! Im also rendering at HD, and I must say the renders look fantastic when played on a big screen!

Chris Haigh's score for the film, is to sum it up in a word, incredible. He has managed to capture the mood and tone of Charon's world, and his emotional journey fantastically. I couldnt be more proud of the work we have produced together! (http://cphproductions.co.uk/)

Updates soon guys!

Hey guys,

I was having MAJOR issues with the uploader last night...I think it uploaded properly, but Im not sure. If not, just wanna paste the link again for the download.

CHARON: The Ferrymaster (http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?1abomhi1mcz)

Apparently I messed up the sound levels....so pump up the volume!

Also, Chris brought to my attention the fact that the FX are drowning out the music. Im going to have another look at it today, and upload a different version with the sound levels worked out. Till then, here is his AMAZING soundtrack in all its mp3'd glory!

Hey Chris! Wonderful to see it finally done. I can really appreciate the amount of time you put into everything like the lighting, environments, smoke sims etc. What a massive undertaking! I love the mood you created, and some of the camera placement in some of the shots is great. The shot near the end, after Charon's little girl is taken away by the demon, with the boat moving along the water was heartbreaking, because you knew that he no longer had something he cared about, but his fate (to guide souls across the river styx) could not change....and it was great that you didn't need to "tell" the viewer that. It was conveyed perfectly by the mood of the shot.

I also really like the way the smoke "bubbled" in and out on the girl character. A very nice effect

Congrats! Good luck in the judging phase :D
