View Full Version : Indoor: Old Corridor
frici 06-14-2003, 03:41 PM hi all,
i am new to cgtalk & 3d as well. i created this picture to serve as a base of a future poster. my aim is to make it as close to real as it is possible. i am using 3ds max 5 + finalRender ST0 since 2 days, so if you write hints take this in count ;) (well i used 3ds r4 years ago but it was a different story). here is the pic itself:

what else can i do to improve it, is it ok right now, etc... if you wonder why is it so dim, it has to suggest discomfort, coldness and deprivation.
thanks,
frici.

thanks sad!
a bigger one?? that would take ages to render :)
i've ripped through basic max & fR tutorials, but i am far from the "optimizing my scene" sections... maybe, some hints to streamline the rendering?

here it is, i replaced it with the full size version:

my question:
- what can i do with the shadow artifacts caused by GI at the left edge of the left door (should i increase something, or what?)
thanks & bye,
frici.
sorry i do not know that. i use cinema4d (which btw. renders fast and quite good)

Yes I agree wtih BitMAP ... it does somehow create a steril feeling, but in my eyes the radiator is way to big.
Still cool, keep it up
what is up with the lefthand edges of the door ways? is the geomerty screwed up? or are they supposed to be cracks / dents in the wall?

Interesting hallway, It rendinds me of going to an old hospital for the Vets. Memories of those poor guys wandering about come flooding back... Not really liking the door handles facing each other. It's your work not mine though..
BTW Very nice render
yeah i agree about the doors.. but in another way. they look way too short. generally handles arent placed at the half way point but a bit lower. might wanna raise the top of the doors up a bit.
now did you put this through a filter in photoshop or is it just like this from the render? it does look painted in a way.
i like it but i dont see any discomfort, cold or deprivation. it's too green for that. try going for some greys and that'll get it colder.. less saturation. the light also needs to be made more natural and less artificial. the electric lighting look makes it look like it's lived in and less abandoned. maybe you have light coming in from a window to one side.
as far as the artifacts, they're hardly noticeable and i dont know finalRender or MAX so i cant give you technical hints on using either one.

thanks koinu, that was in my head when i sketched it:)
you helped me a lot, and i've tried to implement most of your thoughts guys, such as the smaller radiator, taller doors, and desaturated lights. in fact there are no lights in it right now, just pure GI. i cut some windows on the opposite walls to let some nice reflections come through and lighten up the wall a bit. finally i got through the fR manual, and find the way to eliminate those rendering artifacts, so they are gone too.
i don't use any post production, the painted look what some of you liked probably comes from the combination of blurry reflections and the bump map used as a specular map also.
how do you like it now? what about the mood?

Frici,
Hey I like the reflections, although you might want to bleed out the light in a four directions to give a bbetter feel that they are windows. The reflections seems too perfect in a way. Render another with the window reflection pushed out. Check out www.jeffunay.com and look at his hallway and his light skeem, he did a grat job with the lights, plau he put a diagram on teh site that shows hi light set-up... Good Job:thumbsup:
And please put translation from Hungarian to English, I am interested in the Hungarian lanuage and would like to know what you guys said!!

thanks BiTMAP and koinu, and you are right, sorry for the Hungarian.
we were just talking about, that the pic will be the basis of a submitted work for an annual nationwide outdoor poster competition called @®© (="face" in Hungarian, its a play with letters:)). graffb also wanted to join and get some info about it.
anyway, back to the hallway: i checked out jeff unay's site, but i couldn't figure out, how to make a light "bleed". please could you give some hints on it, as i sad i am sort of a newbie to the 3d world.
bye,
frici.

Frici, Hope Jeff's hallway was some of a help for you... What I mean about "bleeds" the reflection of the windows is, make the reflection bigger. When a window let light into an area it doesn't just put the light on a wall the same size that the window is, the light on the wall will be larger that the window. Needless to say the light sources will fill up more of the wall surface.. Hope this is a better explination for you..

yeah, thanks it's clear now. i see, you meant the reflections "pouring down" on the wall. i think, i am moving on to Photoshop and continue the color/light tweaking there as the contest what i've mentioned is closing very soon.
thanks for the great comments guys, see you soon in my (maybe your?) next wip thread! :wavey:
bye,
frici.
