View Full Version : Hiding stuff (markers) with After Effects
roel018 11-12-2008, 10:46 AM Hi all..
I created this movie (http://www.roelkrottje.nl/grunge/motiontracking1.wmv) to test some motion tracking and compositing techniques. However, as you can see, the markers I used to track the footage with (to match it with the 3d software package I use) are still in the composition..
My question is, can I remove these markers with After Effects? I know I could remove them in Photoshop frame by frame but that's not my intension (very time consuming)... Is there any other (fast) way I could do this???
Thnx in advance!
Kind regards,
Roel

Track the markers, clone stamp the area near a marker and link it to the marker.

Well, it's time consuming either way, no matter what program, even more so, since you used some odd kind of marker approach. A better solution would have been to use e.g. red dots created with a die-punch. You could have derived a matte from them and by combining it with your source footage used e.g. RevisionFX RE:Fill for an automated removal of the "holes". Or you could have built your own effects stack with some matte effects, Minimax and some matte trickery...

Sounds great!
I've tracked the markers and clone stamped the area, but how do I link the clone stamp paint to the markers?
Thnx!

Duplicate the layer, mask the clonestmped part and apply the trackers transform data to the duplicate.

Sorry man, I'm a complete AE noob.. Duplicate the Layer, Check.. Mask the Clonestamped Part?? How do I this? And transform the data to the duplicated layer????
Sorry I'm doing the best I can here... =)

Mask the Clonestamped Part?? How do I this?Draw a mask. Basic stuff and well explained in the manual.
And transform the data to the duplicated layer?Either by defining the duplicated and hopefully masked layer as target in the tracker control window or by copy/pasting the transformation data from the tracker to the layer.
First way is easier.
No access to AE so I can't provide exact names and such, but tracker controls are explained in the manual too. It's a 5 minute read.
If you prefer videos, go to www.videcopilot.net.
Usage of trackers and masks explained in a a dozen variations.

Ok thnx a lot!!!
I think I'll look into the Video Pilot tuts tonight to see if I can manage to get it done ;)
Thnx for pushing me in the right direction!

Ok figured out how to do it ;)..
However, the colour of the desk below the marker changes a lot over time due to changing lightning angles.. If I use the clone stamp tool or even a single (featered) filled shaped to mask off a marker, the masked part (the clone or the solid) get's really visible after a couple of frames simply because the surrounding deskpart changes colour over time..
So I'm guessing the best thing I can do is hide the markers by hiding them with peaces of rock :) .. Think that will be my next step..
Thnx for your advice!

Throw a levels effect on your tracked patches and animate the color changes manually to match.
