11-16-2008, 06:18 PM
Some thumbnails sketching and some composition adaptations.
11-16-2008, 06:19 PM
A speedpainting from the previous study around Perseus , Pegasus , Andromeda & Ceto.
11-16-2008, 07:32 PM
Nice concept! I like the composition! :)
11-16-2008, 07:36 PM
These concepts are looking great! looking forward to see them progress!
I like the pegasus best so far! Looking forward to see more!
11-16-2008, 11:34 PM
Yes. The pegasus concept looks most promising at the moment.
Your last sketch reminded me ancient Russian icons of Gorge The Victorious:
Beautiful sketch! It has the same iconic feel in it.
But I must admit - like the Pegasus transport machine better...
11-17-2008, 08:58 AM
great concept david! i like the wings design a lot! is this your final concept sketch?
how about showing the front side of pegasus and perseus? and tilting the camera angle more toward the direction of the spear being thrust into the creature itself ... that way .. there's a lot of force and dramatism involved ... see how it goes :p
good luck bro!
11-17-2008, 10:47 AM
nice ideas !!
11-17-2008, 11:12 AM
I started to add more brush strokes and work on one of the hot part of the drawing ; Ceto "steampunked".
11-17-2008, 01:58 PM
awesome myth to portray a steampunkish action! Im signing in to stay in touch with ur further development :) good luck!
11-17-2008, 02:31 PM
Just great as always with your works, keep great works up then
11-17-2008, 05:31 PM
Really like your last composition which has lot of movements and dynamics going on. Eagerly waiting for updates!
11-17-2008, 07:57 PM
Another WIP , with starting to add first large détail and ideas and correct some problems.
11-17-2008, 08:24 PM
CodeNothing >> Thanks for your appreciate message, make me more trust in this composition
DefiledVisions >> Thanks too, I hope you will like the one I choose to developp.
Goro >> Hargh , you broke my heart cause I choose to ilustrate my last sketch, more classical. Thanks for your precious advice, even if I do the bad kid and not follow it.
MartinNielsen >> Hargh again , I want to say something customised for answer you but , I didn't have enought englih vocabulary to say with other words what I explain to Goro above.
Musi >> You are right, but my idea refer more of a lot of "crossing" legends. The one of perseus / adromeda / Ceto revisited a the renaissance with Pegasus ( at original Perseus have flying boots ) , this customisation look to appear with the old european legend mixed of "Orlando Furioso". http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Ruggiero_rescuing_angelica_Jean_Auguste_Dominique_Ingres.jpg
But all of them are near of St Georges, thanks for the link ;)
Nwiz25>> Ha thanks for the advices, but I will manage this picture as a "large" scene printable in hi-res printing. So I have to respect some classical criteria as no cutting with the frame the boddys, and show the scene with a narrative method by places elements in a reading way. For sure I can't say I found the best solution, but I've tryied some oher in my thumbnails to take time to imagine what the picture would do by other way.
NinjaA55N>> Woo, great artist , thanks to come on my thread. Yep I choose to steampunkish a myhtological action that lookt for me the best way to feel ensure about the subject of this contest.
Mim-Armand>> Thanks for your warm encouragement. It's hard with first WIPs submited , they look ugly , soon I think my picture will start to be "watchable" . I'm happy if you think I engage the work in a good direction.
Donglu-LittleFish>> Wao , I really like your portfolio , thanks for your comments , I really like your feedback.
I don't know if I will can continue to answer like this to all message , cause of time .
But 10000 thanks for all of them.
11-17-2008, 10:11 PM
mkaaaay this is allready looking so EPIC!! wonderfull work :D
11-18-2008, 12:44 AM
wow... good luck... nice sketch.
11-18-2008, 07:13 AM
Like your style David and good choice ;)
you are going to hate me but I think if you choose a lower camera angle the image would
be more dynamic. Right now it looks a bit static to me. More like a maquette if you know what I mean. And the ceto could use more characteristics of "steampunk". More gold and retro style pipes. Also shouldn't the horse be driven by steam instead of those jet propulsions?
Really great sketch, like a lot the atmosphere on it, cool!! and the ceto design is awesome. Great work so far ! Cheers mate!
11-18-2008, 08:49 AM
Cool concept and work; I think you can refine the horses legs a bit - maybe have a look at some reference pics of a horse's front and rear legs. The front leg can also be thinner as it is further away from the viewer. Otherwise looking great!
11-18-2008, 09:37 AM
I love the colour palette you have going on here, it speaks perfectly of greek mythology. However, I have a point or two to bring up....first, the laser? It's too modern for the steampunk genre. Secondly, shouldn't his shield be on the other side to protect him from Ceto? Another thing, I'm afraid...I have to agree with Goro...the drama would be much greater with a different perspective. You could make the horse bigger and move it closer to the camera (so the corner cuts off a part of it) to make it appear to be flying into the frame to attack Ceto. Just a thought.
But I reeeeeeally like the colour palette. :D
11-18-2008, 10:11 AM
calisto >> Cool , that's exactly what I want to do, an epic scene.
nash88 >> Thanks Nash, exctly as you said I consider it as sketchs, I change idea and practise design.
Elendil_le_Grand >> Nice to see you on the challenge my dear Elendil. I have to jump your thread soon. Thanks !
Goro >> I HATE YOU ..... ( Not ) !!! Your right on all, and thanks for your sharp eye.
I think I have to start over on a good base now my design are more definited. ( to avoid horse problem / have a good perspective /etc )
May be I will use a 3D dummy? I have to think about it to make a good start.
Ferx >> Thanks, I will redesign Ceto to be have more volume and be less flat.
RupertD >> Thanks for your observation. I think I will redo totally the horse. I'm not happy with the design for know.
Paperclip >> The colour palette is insparted by a mix of W. Bouguereau painting found on wikipedia, a good trick to have a base of classical & epic picture.
About the lazer , your right : as Goro is right about the reactor on the horse. Thanks for your advice about camera, I will redo something about it.
I have to think about a tool that would be able to compensate my lake of technics. 3D is good in a certain way, but I will be more proud if I will start over a strong line art all drawed in 2D.
Not evident.... For the moment I will do some freelance job to refresh my mind ( and win money for paying my food and appartement ... haha )
all brilliant stuff... one coolest than the other.:applause:
11-18-2008, 01:45 PM
Wow, this thread is great!
I really like the work you're doing, the dragon is excellent :applause:
11-19-2008, 02:53 AM
Before return to the main scene, I take time to work on concept art. Here : the main site and enginering on "Pegasus".
DeeVad - shit man! - you have really made some progress! I will follow this one - best of luck!
11-20-2008, 05:06 AM
oh wow. I love your idea! This is going to be awesome. Keep up the amazing work. I'll be watching..... hehe.
11-20-2008, 08:12 AM
Nice horse, Deevad :)
11-20-2008, 08:17 AM
Yep really nice ;)
The mechanics of the wing look quite believable.
The whole machinery on the horse's back feels a bit too heavy for a horse with such thin legs and fragile frame, it kind of calls for stronger horse. From another site, Pegasus is an extraordinary horse, and it possesses powers and strengths out of reach of the ordinary horse. And then it looks very elegant as it is :)
Just thinking laud :)
11-20-2008, 10:01 AM
I can see you are doing well, really very well :)
especially for the horse, huge little details :D
11-20-2008, 09:27 PM
I continue on the Pegasus design. I'm helped from the comment, and I decided to choose a lighter equipement than the previous. More lightweight, and with a concept I create and like : Steam Wings.
Now I feel have a strong concept for Pegasus.
11-20-2008, 09:45 PM
That steamwing concept rocks, you're right, keep going with that! Love that gasmask on it's face too!
11-20-2008, 09:57 PM

BrittanyRichardson : Hi Brittany , nice to see you ! It's pleasant to have comments from familiar poeple. Thanks a lot !
Martin : Thanks a lot, as I see their is a lot of good concept boy ( and girl) in the challenge arena, I must work a bit.
Elendil : >> Thanks Friend !
Musi : The new update was drawing in thinking a lot to your comment, and I think it's a better one. Thanks !
MaxSpidder : Thanks MaxSpidder !
NR43 : Thanks I hope to keep on this road for Perseus and other designs.
Kredepops : Thanks for this first comment encouraging before I go to sleep, that's precious !
11-20-2008, 10:02 PM
heh, I know, I kinda disappeared for a while, but this challenge brought me back - sparked my interest.
Anyway, I love your most recent pegasus concept. I really like the idea of the steam wings! That's brilliant. I like the mask too and all the other really lovely details. inspiring. :)
WOW! I love those wings with steam instead of feathers! It's really great! And the horse looks lite, elegant and yet powerful. LOVE those small doodles on hooves, and the mask!
That's what I am talking about!
This is one of the most original steampunk interpretations...+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
O.k, those pluses are my cat's contribution to my excitement - he just gracefully dropped his back side on the keyboard :D
Glad to be of some help...
oh yeah now that looks more steampunkish!
Great progress man!
See if I can update my thread tonight....
11-20-2008, 10:56 PM

11-23-2008, 04:43 PM
BrittanyRichardson: So, it looks like we disappeared and reappeared from Cgtalk at the same time :) Thanks for your comment about the last concept.
Musi : Thanks , you gave me a good feedback from the last ( heavy) one Pegasus. and your "+++++++" are cutes :)
Goro : Thanks Goro ! I will go "slowly but surely" and draw each concept separed before inclued them in a large scene. I will surely avoid perspective problem and not good design.

balfs21 : Thanks !
Ataulfo : Thanks, the next ones will be harder ; Ceto and the city ; I will sketch till december I'm sure !
NR43 : Thanks, I tried to read more documentation about steam and the Victorian style. That was a great spring of inspiration.
Neubius : Hey Hey, I think I will forgive the laser ideas, and return to a traditionnal strict Steampunk design for purist.
LORDvesalius : Thanks ! I will try to keep improvement.
Nwiz25 : Thanks !
Snows : Thanks, you are right about size ; I will see in the last scene and composition to enlarge them.
Jeromoo : Hi Jeromoo ! I didn't regonise you at first cause of the avatar changing ; last one was a little monk with calm eyes if I remember :) Are you in the challenge too ? Thanks to came on my thread :)
MeijaSan : Thanks !

12-09-2008, 10:43 AM
david, great stuff in here!
i love the composition in post 39 really the most. i can't quite read where the rider is looking though, i'd make it very clear that he is aiming at the monster in water that he is shooting. also, dig the colors in that one, good work and bonne chance!
12-10-2008, 05:08 PM
I love your pegasus. I was thinking it wasn't possible to do steam winfs. I'm glad you did it it looks great. I'm still thinking how my pegasus wings will look. But thanks for posting this. I like how your work is coming along.

I am off my image entry too - struggling to get the video going...
See you next time! And thanks for all that good advice you gave me :)
