First I wish you all good luck with your entries !

The Legend 'Golem' comes agan to my mind spontanously ... but at same time it makes me sceptical. Why choose a legend of a city in a foreign country ... I've got that book about "Myths and Legends in Switzerland" and done first a research for a basic story thats closer to me and my cultural background. Otherwise many legends are not much related to a specific country and could be 'happen' anywhere, Golem too, hmmm ...

I'm just thinking loud.

It risk to have many Golem in this challenge...

and "Myths and Legends in Switzerland" is more original... I prefer a lot this one...

Best wishes for the Challenge :wavey:

I'done a research about swiss myth & legends,
there a 3 very well know legends ...

1) Wilhelm Tell (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilhelm_Tell) - The man with the crossbow a fighter against the emperor, a national myth about the beginning of Swiss Confederation in 1291 !

2) Arnold Winkelried (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winkelried) - Martyr in the Battle of Sempach

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/e3/Winkelried_at_Sempach.jpg/250px-Winkelried_at_Sempach.jpg

3) Teufelsbrücke - Devils Bridge (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teufelsbr%C3%BCcke) - A legend about the bridge built by the Devil himself.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/1/11/Teufelsbr%C3%BCcke01.jpg/250px-Teufelsbr%C3%BCcke01.jpg

BUT,
I have choosen another one .... :curious:

Grin3d

I've choosen the legend about the Giant Säntis (or Sämtis).

A legend about this giant and how the typical scattering settlement (streusiedlung) was made in this part of Switzerland. (http://translate.google.ch/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.tagblatt.ch%2Faktuell%2Fappenzell%2Ftb-ap%2Fart136%2C320738&sl=de&tl=en&hl=de&ie=UTF-8)

His bed was the 'schwendibachtal' and his cushion was the "meglisalp". The "Sealpsee" was built by his elbow when he was standing up to pick up several houses for building a city (!)

http://www.grin3d.ch/steampunk/Ohne%20Titel2.jpg

http://www.grin3d.ch/steampunk/Seealpsee.JPG (http://www.freizeitfreunde.ch/images/Seealpsee.JPG)

A farmer has made a long slit with his scythe in the giant's bag filled with houses; so the giant lost all the houses on his way. Now it's look similiar to this :

http://www.grin3d.ch/steampunk/pic.jpg

I've choosen this story because I think it something I can handle in time and with my skills. A steampunked giant who pick up a house to fill his bag.
Another version told how the giant was stumble across a mountain (säntis).

I will do now some sketches (probably in 3d).

I already saw your story in my head... great !

For the fun, you can see some references of swiss village in Paris 1900 exposition !

but of course, you have more in your country :scream:

Bon courage pour la suite, j'ai hâte de voir les premiers crobards !

I've choosen the legend about...

The Giant Säntis (or Sämtis).

The legend about the giant Säntis (or Sämtis) tells how the typical scattering settlement (streusiedlung) was created in this part of Switzerland.

His bed was the 'schwendibach valley' and his pillow was the 'meglisalp'. The 'Sealpsee' (lake) was built by his elbow when he was standing up to pick up several houses for building a big city.

A farmer has made a long slit with his scythe in the giant's bag filled with houses; so the giant lost all the houses on his way.

Or - another version told how the giant was stumble across a mountain (säntis).

I've choosen this story because I think it is something I can handle in time and with my skills and 'cause it's a legend located near my home (less then one hour by car).

I will do now some concept sketches (probably in 3d).

Main scene elements:
- Giant (Steampunk Design)
- Little mountain cottage
- With or without Farmer and his scythe

Sorry for the doublepost, but I'd like to submit my concept idea to the challenge page.

Hello Roman,

so you're going with a local legend, good choice. I've heard of this one before, but had only a vague memory, so I appreciate the good explanation:) . And the concept sketches already give a good idea of the scene. So I'm looking forward to see more now!

I'm trying to figure out now the design of the giant with lot of metal plates, gears, tubes etc. For the cottage I want a realistic render (as realistic as possible).

Hi Roman,

hey, your giant is coming along nicely! I like the concept sketches and the modeling part is already very good:thumbsup: . Good idea also to give him a light as a kind of cyclops eye, I can already imagine that he will look fairly frightening in the final scene!

Have a nice day,

quick modeling update of the giant's arm. it gives me an idea of the arm construction so I will made it now again in similar way and with more components.

So I guess the construction of the arms will be still visible later, that was not clear in the sketches - good solution, very much in style!

Morning Roman,

wow, some serious progress here, and an original look for the giant indeed! The preview with the environment sketch looks fine for me, perhaps just too much empty space in the upper part...how about adding a kind of backpack for the giant?

you're right with the empty space; and in fact I planned to add a backpack before, but I think it should be bigger as it is on sketches. thanks, sabrina.
but first I focus on the second house ...
