I have only seen screen shots, but in pcworld they were showing the Pinky model from doom 3 using normal maps for bump maps?

There was a really high res model of Pinky i guess ID renders that and uses it as a bump map? is there a way to do this so i can for exp have a guys face with lots of detail, render it so it saves as a image file. i can then use that image file on a low res face but the image i have will make it look like i have lots of detail. im not schure how i would go about doing this, im positive ID does this though. like the marines helmet has tons of detail, you can tell it has a texture from a high res model being used on it. i would just be incredibly greatful if anyone can explain how to do this

I don't know if I've caught it right but isn't it just a displace map??

I believe I saw some more info (technical) in a Nvidia Shader book at Borders... don't remember the name of the book, I was just thumbing through it.

I doubt it'll replace bump maps in maya... because it is generated from a higher resolution object, maybe even a 3d scan (you cant just paint it in PS)... I think thats what you were asking
(what would work nice is sculpt a detailed, clay model and use a 3dscanner, make a normal map from that, then model a lowres poly.. but thats sounds better for film than the everyday project)

The format fits quite nicely in to games though. It looks pretty easy to apply too. He has a longer tutorial to explain the process, but if you look at the top of the normal maps tutorial for a "Faster, bigger, better" link on how to accomplish it faster.

I haven't tried this myself yet, just read up on it. A few friends of mine talked about working on a mod.... so we've started with some research.
